Is there the possibility to have 3 words working as one? I explain myself. If I want to analyse collocations of the word "Queen" in a given corpus, but "Majesty", "Monarch", "She" refer to the same person, and I don't want the engine to treat them as different lemmas. Thanks!
A manual annotation in the vertical file would be necessary for this (i.e. to change the lemma of all these words to the same one). Please contact us at support@sketchengine.eu for details.
Hi. I'm a big fan of Sketch Engine. I'm trying to find out a good tool to study Collocation. But I'm wonder which copora is the standard one for every English leaner ?
The best corpus for English collocations is the enTenTen 15 corpus. Simply type 'ententen15' into into the corpus selection box at the top of the screen.
Unfortunately, the question of good/bad, correct/wrong collocation is a lot more complicated. The score does not express the quality of the collocation but the strength or typicality. High score means: "these two words like being together a lot and they don't like being together with other words". Low score means: "these two works like being together but they also like being together with other words". 'costly mistake' will have a high score, but 'small mistake' will have a low score and both are still perfectly correct. It is just that 'small' likes to combine with many other word, while 'costly' does not combine with that many. Maybe frequency would be a better indicator of whether a collocation is normal to use or whether using it would sound unusual.
I have recently found out about Sketch Engine. I am interested in determining how it could be used to learn a language such as Maori (for which I note that a corpus exists).
Sketch Engine can indeed be used by language learners and teachers but it is not a language learning system. Sketch Engine should be used to check how words and phrases are used by real users of the language. For example, which word combinations (collocations) are most typically used by real users. The information in Sketch Engine is always derived from authentic texts and may differ from what dictionaries or coursebooks say.
It is possible to get another word collocate by inserting a lemma in the word sketch. but how can we insert a single "lemma" to get three or more collocate words to the lemma at the same time? eg. by inserting the word "culture " in the search box how can we get "celebrate diverse culture" as one entity ?
If you want collocations for "diverse culture", you just type "diverse culture" in the input or you type only "culture" and then click word sketch in the local menu for "diverse". You can do the same with 3-word phrases such as "celebrate diverse culture". Does it answer your question?
@@SketchEngine Thank you so much. You have partially answered my question.. My question is '' can i insert a single word in the search box & get a phrase collocation or two words that collocate that word right away ? eg. By inserting a word "comparison" can i get a phrase '' draw+meaningful+between '' i.e more than two word collocations of the word at the same time to get a phrase like Draw+ meaningful+ comparison + between etc. ???? NB. The words '' Draw , meaningful, & between '' are independent collocations of the word comparison. But i wanted them in one phrase or one sentence. If you didn't now understand what i wanted to say ... please leave it !
@@beri472 You can only get one additional word at a time. You cannot type just one word and get 3 words as output. You can, however, achieve this by using our API. This will, however, require some basic programming skills to build a script that automates the procedure the way you want.

thank you so much ! Good luck with your business !...
Thank you.
oh. I forgot one thing . When I sort results by score, What is the minimum score which shows me a bad collocation that I shouldn't use it ?

@@SketchEngine Thank you for your response. In my book, authentic texts trump grammars and dictionaries any day, so I am in full agreement with you!

I wish I could create a multimodal corpus with sketch engine!
This is indeed possible. The corpus can contain links to multimedia (sound, video, images or other) which can then be shown in the interface.
