  • I have wanted one of these for a while now so I can stop soldering tabs on batteries- bad idea. I checked out a bunch of them online and settled on this one. Let's take a look at it and see how well it works.

I got one of these about 6 months ago. Maybe even the same one you purchased. It worked fine for me. I wrote an Amazon review reporting my results. I remember that mine did not come with the plastic 18650 battery holders.

I read a lot about these things before I got this one. It seems they pretty much run the gamut from great to lousy. I am glad this one falls in the former category even though it did cost a bit extra.I needed this to make a 12.6V battery pack for an old CB HT from Radio Shack that uses 4/5 height AA batteries and almost no extra room in the shell. I printed a couple of holders for those batteries too. It helps a lot.

nice fun little gadget, I guess you will be making your own battery PSu's now then it will go in a drawer🙂

Yes, it will spend most of its life in a drawer but it will get more use than you think. Up till now I have had to solder tabs to coin batteries that are used as memory backup in most ham radios. Not anymore. Now I can actually make them right and look more professional. Right now though I have to make some battery packs I will never use.

Out is for an additional load, beyond the active load's capacity. I use a DL24 Active DC Load, which has a similar design, though all of the parameters are set using tactile switches to set all such parameters. The serial interface (Bluetooth or USB) allows parameters to be set from a PC application and to add data logging and testing. The DL24 is a neat upgrade, but if you get one -- download my software. IMO, the load then is "almost" lab quality.

Looks like Ali Express has DL24 for about $40. When I get some free cash I will try one out. I will definitely use your software since your other program works so well with my VICI. Both of these beat the heck out of my home brew version but at least it was cheap.

@@AERVBlog Make sure that you get the version with Bluetooth. That is what makes it useful. I think it may cost a little more. I remember spending about $55.

I got one of the Seesii portable spot welders because I was tired of toting a lawn tractor battery around to power my other spot welder.

I find that I really do end up using this thing a lot. Who knew? Plus, it makes a nice power bank.

@@AERVBlog I don’t need a power bank. I have a DeWalt work light. I can plug a usb C or usb A into it, plus I can switch to one of my big DeWalt batteries to power the work light.

I use my Dremel too to clean up the old spot weld marks on batteries.

That is true. Cleaner is better in any kind of welding.

I bought this exact model about one and a half years ago but didn't get around to trying it out until recently. It would not turn on when I "long pressed" the power button. I hooked up the charger and the screen came on but said "low battery" and the battery icon showed it was full with no indication of it charging, contradictions that indicated some type of problem. I took the front and back plates off of the welder and figured out how to remove the board, (It has small aluminum bars that slide out to remove it but are pretty easy to push out, That plastic goop shown in this video only keeps you from sliding the board out that way, it isn't holding the board in place. Inside was a battery pack that I checked and had only 2 volts present. I thought I might as well try a battery pack hack and hooked an alligator clip to the positive terminal of the battery pack and another to the negative terminal. Then I got a battery I had that had about 4 volts showing on it and touched the other ends of my leads from the battery pack to the ends of the battery for about 5 seconds. I checked the voltage on the battery pack and it was up to 3 volts. My single battery was still at 4 volts so I repeated the process and then hooked up the charger to the pack. The pack began to charge correctly. It took awhile to charge but when it was full, I put it all back together, (forgot how the aluminum bars went in, so that doubled the time). Afterwards, it worked great, just like the above video shows.

Don't you just love it when you have to fix new stuff? Very good job thinking it through.

I have the older version with the massive transformer inside. I think I'll try this one though.
I'm not very comfortable touching those probes bare handed. My old machine recommends rubber gloves.

The probes appear to be pretty well insulated. I didn't feel anything at all. I used it to build a 10 cell NIMH and it worked perfectly.

I studied the video and managed to buy the exact one you have. Same supplier and packaging.
The manual is useless and quite a laugh. Especially when we are in 2023 and nearly everything comes from China. By now translations should be understandable. This is as bad as it was in the 1950's.
Thankfully your video will give me a good starting point.
As far as the test leads, I did not realize the probes had shrink wrap. My initial reaction was they were bare copper. I think I'll add another layer of shrink wrap just for safety.
      Regards
      Tom
