Oh, now this sounds pretty damn good. Subversion of expectations: check. Uniqueness: check. Depth and existential exploration: check. Battle of words between character and author? Exquisite!
    Wanna read it now.
The fact that it's pretty old makes me wonder how many unique story concepts have been done before that fell to obscurity.

Yeah, I could definitely recommend giving this one a look. :) I feel like there are probably lots of little gems out there like this that did revolutionary stuff but then got overshadowed by other books later.

Interesting. I only knew about Unamuno through Harald Bloom being a fan of his and had "saved" him in my head as some sort of (proto-)existentialist philosopher.
Yeah, non-anglophone (proto-)modernists often get the short thrift when it comes to recognition. Although, the metafictional elements you mentioned might be more common in spanish literature than in the other western traditions due to Miguel de Cervantes. I mean, Don Quijotte pioneered a lot of the literary trolling techniques we like to think of as "postmodern" nowadays.

I think Unamuno was greatly inspired by Cervantes. The tragicomic tone may also kind of allude to Don Quixote.

John Carpenter's film "In the Mouth of Madness" has similar elements.

It's another book that I think is pretty obscure, so I'm happy to be able to maybe give it a little boost. :)

@@TH3F4LC0Nx I'd read Unamuno's "Tragic Sense", but I'd never heard of this. But a wild card meta-movel? This one I will track down.

@@SmallSpaceCorgi I'm intrigued to read Tragic Sense of Life now. Hope I like it as much as I did this novel. :)
