    I worked on a coal strip job with a buddy who would get his D-9 G beside mine, we both had the u-blades.Talk about an improvised big push.
    That double DD9 is a great piece of history. I love those 666 CAT scrapers. Many Thanks to Boston Power for a great video. God Bless to all.

    Mate of mine had one of these 4 wheels same size on the cab unit and a huge dozer blade .
    Absolutely awesome machine 🙂🙂

      Might've been an 830 Cat. They had a tilt blade and a 7 yard pan hookup. Or it might've been just a Cat rubber tired dozer!

    I sat here watching, shaking my head with a smile on my face. Boy Howdy you did a superb job on the double9 as well as everything else. I thought the B.P.C. decals were nifty too! Glad everything is settling down and all is as it should be. I worked on a dam job that had single 9 pushers and TS & S Euclid pans. Long time ago and my back and hindmost still hasn't gotten over it. Got to go run the 5-K some but will be thinking about the Double-9 and the Triple-6! Hi to the Mrs. and the folks and everybody else hanging about the diesel museum. Squeeze some juice out of Pops' beard for me! (Us'ns) here in the hills

      Ahhh Lewie, I thought I would keep this video quiet, make it a Christmas surprise for you!! So glad to hear that you enjoyed it. Don't worry I do have your email and I will be replying, but you know how work and everything else gets in the way of life!!
      Hope all is well you and the family?

      Bostonpowercat Well my friend, you sure succeeded! I knew when you got re-settled back home there would be a dandy lurking around, and there sure was! What a combo. Mercy I dearly love the sound of those big bore/long stroke engines with a V-8 or V-12 thrown in for good measure.
      Got done with the big job so am now just knocking around home and running the 5-K once in a while, enough to keep the kinks hammered out. I lay stiff odds you and your Sweetie are just like big-eyed younguns in a candy store, making home sweet home home sweet home. Maybe if everything works out one day when you go visit Beantown again you might swing down South for a day or 2.
      We're all fine here for a couple of goofy people but we can blame that on our ancestors if we need to. You have a LARGE weekend and store the juice from Pops beard in a bomb-proof container. Don't want anything agrivating it and CHEERS 2 U ALL from (Us'ns) here on the semi-swamp

    Thanks for the fill-in on the multiple unit control,on those D9's! Actually that's straight out of the Baldwin Locomotive Works playbook,as they also used a pneumatic system on their engines! Later,they used the far more common EP,that everyone else used! [EP=Electro-pneumatic],Applied to EMD,and Alco,plus Lima! Thanks for a VERY impressive machine(s),and a beautiful restoration! Wow,!! Thanks again! 😊 💯💯💯💯💯💢💢💢💢💢

      Worked in Ca and we had a spread of 20 of these scrapers to start every morning. No double 9 but we had plenty of pushing power D9's H & G eventually progressed in to D9L's somewhere on the spread they always had an HD 41 Fat Alice. Miss it every day!

    Thx for that info on the cylinder ; the sound of those 9s is music to my ears. Started as a Swamper for my Dad when I was about 10 on a D8 14A with a Johnson bar. I would sit there all day on the Cat watching my Dad build road just so I could start the Cat with the pup motor in the morning ; sometimes a can of beans off the manifold being all tarped in in -20 weather and eventually getting to fuel the Cat at night. Thx BPC.

    I'm sure just making a video this length gets expensive. Especially if moving any of this stuff over the road is involved. Fuel, insurance and the crew to make it all happen adds up fast. Its not an easy game to play but thanks for playing it. No dam PCM or security codes will ever stop these from burning diesel. Simple is still just fine for me.

      @@Bostonpowercat WOW and Double WOW! I can't BELIEVE it! HI, Karl! This is just TOO good! GLAD to hear from someone with the old kitty with indigestion again! That's what I always got your brother with. He vanished right after the wedding which I thought he would and that was not really a surprise. That usually happens when that happens, for a while at least but here comes the dependents/tax write-offs or children and things always change drastically after that. 3 stages; single, married and with kid(s). PLEASE give him and his my best and I've thought of yall a LOT since the wedded bliss set in! Also the folks, even though a lot of time has passed and also a lot of friends along the way. We just celebrated our 19th anniversary so things are still looking up! Sounds like you have a lot of job security too. Seems like Rupert had just landed a job himself around wedding time. I finally had to quit because of gout not leaving me alone but being at home is NICE! I still burn some diesel when I can but it doesn't happen much BUT I mow enough grass to offset it somewhat. And it was GPOOD to see the Triple-^ and Double-9 again. We can email too. Thanks again Karl and God Bless!

      @Bostonpowercat  4 года назад

      @Matt Berg ,yes it was hard enough building that set up from scratch using all the Cat components and getting it to operate ,but some incredible engineering to design and build Quad 9s by the legendary “Buster Peterson”.👍

  • @nelsong4719
    @nelsong4719 6 лет назад +1

    As an old Catskinner I'm guessing that front cylinder on that rear 9 is to lift the front end when you're backing up to eliminate drag. What I find amusing is the push block on rear one meaning you could have 4 9s pushing together.

    • @Bostonpowercat
      @Bostonpowercat  6 лет назад

      +Nelson G,that cylinder is called a weight transfer cylinder ,which as the name implies gives the operator the ability to shift weight to the front or rear tractor to help traction,also when left in the float position it acts as as a shock absorber when travelling over rough ground,and is used to lift the drawbar when uncoupling.Cheers.

    When I was a kid I remember seeing a huge tractor at my uncle's farm in Montana(late 80s) , it was the biggest vehicle my young eyes had ever seen. Years later after he passed I saw some pictures of the farm. And there it was in the background it was the tractor from a 666(or very similar scraper) I wish I had the picture of it(I'd really like several pics of it) but those good old boys had that big 2wd monster pulling plows in Montana. And who knows what else they used it for!

      @Bostonpowercat  5 лет назад +1

      @Alex Wrench,that would have been an awesome sight seeing one of those girls as a farm tractor !,they were certainly huge! back in the day and there would be very few tractors today to match the 666 size and power!.Great story thanks for sharing.Cheers.

    A 700hp D10 wouild have no problem push loading the 666.After nearly 40 years the Caterpillar elevated drive sprocket has proven its self

    • @Bostonpowercat
      @Bostonpowercat  7 лет назад +7

      +generationll Yes a D10 would no doubt push load the 666 and probably better than the Quad, but it still wouldn't have as much traction as the Quad purely because it only has 2 tracks not 4. There is nothing wrong with the high drive system and it definitely has proved itself of the years your right, but here at Bostonpowercat we are all about the classic Cats most of them being pony start and no cab, never mind in seat starting and high drives, but that's just personal preference :-)

    If I remember the two D-9 set up came from a man who was related to LeTourneau and I think he worked for either a CAT dealer or a construction co. If I remember correctly the name of the co. or person was Peterson.

      @Dp.oennis Maurer,your memory is pretty good!,the chap who invented the Quad9 was called “Buster Peterson”,the brother of the founder of Peterson Tractors Howard Peterson.It was Buster that use to work for Le Tourneau before he joined up with his brother.
      If you are interested in Cat special products that Buster invented and Peterson history there is a book called “the first sixty years”written by the grand daughter of Howard Peterson a lady called Eileen Graften,she has just completed anther history book to celebrate the 80 years of the Co ,which goes to the printers next week!,so will be looking out for that one myself👍

    Beautiful set of machines! Caterpillar dealer tech here and I had a few chances to work on the D9G's and the 583 Pipelayers. A couple of questions, Does the rear unit have some sort of an open differential to steer it by and the front unit drag it around like a trailer, or does it have the traditional clutch packs like the front unit does? Also does the hydraulic cylinder that attaches the rear unit to the push bar have a special purpose like balancing the front unit or is it to make detaching the machine for transport easier? I think that I could see separate controls for the rear tractor, is it able to be ran on its own or does it have to have the front tractor there in order to get it to operate properly. Thank you for taking the time to keep this old iron going? Nothing like hearing the old engines still purr except to have two of them going for the full effect!!

    • @Bostonpowercat
      @Bostonpowercat  6 лет назад

      +Matt Lee ,thanks for the interest ,the rear tractor still uses its original steering clutches/brakes,but they turn in a jackknifing movement,to make a turn when right front clutch/brake applied then symultaniously the rear left clutch /brake is applied,so they turn in an “arc fashion”,you have the ability to use only the rear tractor to turn left/right for “fine turns”.
      The hydraulic cylinder is called a “weight transfer cylinder”,and does what is ses,by increasing traction to front/rear tractor as required,when in the float position which it is mainly used in it acts as a shock absorber over rough ground.And yes it is helpful when you have couple /uncouple them.
      This particular setup only has the front control platform which was the majority in most Quads,but some of the first few built by “Buster Peterson “from Peterson tractors CA,had duel control platforms ,which meant they could be separated and moved independently,this is something that I would like to add to ours if I can find a second control platform anywhere?.

      Thanks for the information on such a unique machine. Buster Peterson must have been a great engineer/mad scientist as I think that he had a hand in making the Siamese D8 and D9 side by side dozers as well. Sounds like a great individual that I would have loved to sit down for a few beers with. Thanks for restoring and maintaining his work. • @Bostonpowercat
      @Bostonpowercat  4 года назад +3

      twancol,Thankyou for your comments ,it’s is called a Caterpillar quad trac or later known as a Cat DD9G,there were only very few built and only a handful surviving today.In short basically all normal controll leavers/pedals ect removed and replaced with air chambers,and air control valves,with air controll carried to the rear tractor in an umbilical of 16 hoses.Syncrinizing engine speeds is not a major issue due to the power shift transmission absorbing any differences,and infact their are two throttle pedals to provide independent power to front/rear tractors when conditions require it.

I lived close to where a (cloverleaf) was being built on Interstate 65 in Alabama and I watched them work every day during the summer. It was in the mid-1950's and I saw some big scrapers. Some had 4-wheel tractors, and some had 2-wheel tractors, but none were as big as what you have. Do you have pictures of the restoration work? I looked for your web site and it said expired. 🤷

    • @Bostonpowercat
      @Bostonpowercat  2 года назад +1

      @Burt Brooks,yes for a couple of reasons as these blades are specifically for push loading scrapers so the blade is narrow to fit in the cut that the scraper makes,and the inside push arms were designed so that they fit on trunions atached to a heavy duty belly guard and inturn bolted to the chassis ,which removes all the stresses on the final drives which occur on conventional blade set up.Cheers.

The operator had a heart attack and dropped the cutting edge right between the rails with a full load , and Kewit put side boards on the bowl .

    I used to haul these and ran them to back in the 60's & 70's. Our D9's push cat's had a completely different Push Blade on them back then. We had a narrow push Soft Touch (or Cushioned pusher) Where you have a hole lot wider Blade on yours. And, we had the Single Deep Rippers on the back of our's. I guess ours was just ordered differently from Cat.

    Looks like you have some military hardware as well - or are my eyes deceiving me. Never seen anything like these before - I would have thought that 'ball joint' connection looked a bit of a weak point. How do the engines stay in 'Sync' when "travelling light" without the front one pulling or the rear one pushing the other.?

    • @Bostonpowercat
      @Bostonpowercat  6 лет назад +5

      +Christopher Lovelock Hi and yes your spot on there is some military equipment kicking around, if it's not Cat then its military for us!! The ball joint is very solid and bolts on under the rear tractor, I know what you mean, but that thing isn't shifting that's for sure!! As for staying in "sync" they are linked with air controls between the 2 Tractors so anything you do on the front one is reciprocated in the rear one.
