In a most state anything that obscures it is illegal. In fact turning it sideways or any thing other than straight is illegal. As a tag is to be clearly and fully visible means the state , year and month it expires. .

I remember a PRP officer had a power trip once, and gave me a ticket for having an "obstructed plate" (dealer plate cover). I asked how that's an obstruction, and they said "all aspects of the plate must be plainly visible. Plate #, Sticker, the words YOURS TO DISCOVER, and any other symbols, lettering, or markings that came with or are required to be placed on the plate". All because the words YOURS TO DISCOVER were blocked by the dealer plate cover, I got the ticket. Kept it on the front, changed the back one with a clear one. And then cops wonder why so many people have issues with them. One bad interaction spoils the view on the rest. Could have told me they technically aren't legal, and would have had no issue with changing it. But no, "I gotta ticket the 17 year old (at the time) to show how much power I got and meet my quota! Gotta look like I was productive when I get back to the station!" 😂. She's probably still tripping to this day... 😥

Straight pipes are a quality of life issue. It’s no different than your neighbors playing loud music that annoys you. Plate covers hide license plates of criminals and hit/run drivers. Apparently you support them though.

They even have quota systems for how many traffic tickets they need to hand out in a month. they get to decide where to set speed traps. etc...
