Jesus lived in this house after returning from Egypt with Joseph and Mary. The St. Joseph Church built on this site is called the Church of Nutrition, because it was the House of Nutrition, where was fed, where he was loved, where he was taught, where he was laughed and played. This was the house where Jesus grew up during his years in hiding. The Holy family lived here. It was also called St. Joseph’s house.
And this was the place where Jesus learned carpentry from Joseph and worked as a carpenter with Joseph before his doing ministry. Hence this St. Joseph Church is also called Joseph’s workshop. It was the door through which he entered the world he came and save..
During the time of Jesus, the life of the people of Nazareth was simple. Nazareth village at that time was a small farming town and had an estimated population so people could easily recognize each other. At that time people lived in cave houses. Their workshop, church, living house were all inside the cave. Nazareth had bad reception at that time. So people had a different view of Nazareth at that time. They did not expect anything good to come from Nazareth.. That is why Nathanael asked to Philip like this…. "Can any good things come out of Nazareth..?"
But a great man, Jesus, came from this town of Nazareth to save the whole world. To give salvation to all people. He is the king of kings and lord of lords. Praise the Lord..! Hallelujah…!
This cave church has a mikvah from the time of Joseph and Mary. The church was probably started by the early Christians around 100 AD or by the Byzantines around 400 AD.
To protect this cave-house, the public is not allowed free access to it.
The modern church of today The Franciscans rebuilt the new church we see today in 1914 on top of the earlier churches and cave-house complex.
