Valerio Longoria - Rosalito

  • He originally played the standard pre-war repertory of Texas border music -- waltzes, huapangos and schottisches -- but then began to add new elements. He learned the Colombian cumbia while living among Puerto Ricans in Chicago in the late 1950's, and after he adopted it, it became an important part of Mexican-American conjunto. He popularized, if not pioneered, the practice among south Texas conjunto musicians of playing the accordion while standing up and it is said that he was the first to use the modern trap drum set in conjunto, in 1948.
    Longoria created a different style of playing, improving on that of Martinez -- ''a smoother style, with longer extended runs,'' said Juan Tejeda, a conjunto music historian. He also sang while playing the lead line on the accordion, another innovation.
    Conjunto is a hard-driving dance music in which the accordion leads a small band that also includes the guitarlike bajo sexto and the drums. In the development of the music, Mr. Longoria was the next major innovator after creators of the form like Narciso Martinez and Santiago Jimenez.
    Longoria was born in Clarksdale, Miss., in 1924, one of nine children of cotton field workers, and spent his early childhood in Kennedy, Tex. He began playing accordion at age 7, and he was soon under the spell of Martinez, the accordionist who in the mid-1930's helped conjunto become a popular, working-class dance music and created a new, more indigenously Texas-Mexican style of playing the accordion, with fewer bass notes and more focus on the melody

    This video of Mr. Longoria & accompaniment should be preserved in the archives ofUSA musical history. How can a being
    with an appreciation of music not love this lively song and it's roots? Part of America's historical values in music I think!

    My respect for the late great legend Mr. Don Valerio Longoria which I had the honor to meet him in person w/ wife Becky, when he had his old Chevy brown van. Very down to Earth people. I regret not learning the accordion when Don Valerio Longoria tried to teach me & for free of no charge when I was young. Now I feel dumb for not learning when I had the chance in life. Glad that his kids Valerio Jr, Flavio, learn from him. God Bless this great Legends for it's music of today's Conjunto & Tex-Mex industry. Thanks for sharing this great video of this Master artist Legends.

    Conjunto came from the Texas’ German & Polish accordionist. Norteño came much later. Okay, here is the history of Tejano music. The German Americans and Polish Americans brought the accordion to Texas. They were miners along the Rio Grande and they were settlers in New Bruanfels and Karnes County area in the 1930s. (Narciso Martinez heard the German/Polish accordion in the Rio Grand Valley, Santiago Jimenez (Flaco's dad) heard it in New Bruanfels and Valerio Longoia heard it in Karnes County. Tejanos removed the bass from the accordion and used the bajo sexto as the bass. Then came the drums and thus it was call Conjunto and Norteño soon followed because the originally recorded their music Texas late 1950s (RGV & San Antonio.

    • @joseenedinomorales
      @joseenedinomorales 9 лет назад +1

      Tejano came into the 1950's. Stop commenting when you don't know shit because they didn't even use the term for this type of music of tex-mex music. If you know history, Norteno was born in Texas so your logic is flawed.

    • @makeitconjunto
      @makeitconjunto 8 лет назад +7

      Con todo respeto pero lamento contradecirlo, el conjunto tejano y el conjunto norteño nacieron al mismo tiempo, el conjunto tejano nacio en San Antonio y el conjunto norteño nacio en Monterrey comercialmente hablando ya que fueron terminos que comenzaron a usar las compañias disqueras... pero la musica de acordeon, bajosexto y tololoche viene de la musica regional mexicana y es mas posible que del norte de Mexio haya subido para Texas... abusado que en Monterrey tambien hubo Alemanes, Austriacos y Europeos en los años 1860 que tocaban el acordeon...

      makeitconjunto En Reynosa tocando de cantina en cantina, y asi casi en todas las fronteras de mexico se desparramo, y lo mismo paso en Tejas pero eso es conjunto music, por ended Don Paulino Bernal descubrio a los Relampagos del norte en una cantina en Reinosa tamaulipas, a grab ar con gran exito y la musica Era "nortena" no te Jana que es diferente, ya despues tubieron gran exito en mexico, es mi humilde opinion.

    • @rembertomondragon6169
      @rembertomondragon6169 7 лет назад +1

      Puro San Luis , that correct sir, is a matter of fact Paulino Bernal dicovered the Relampagos del norte in Reynosa, he took them to McAllen tx to record their first Hits as I believe the first recording label was Bego, they became a sensation en el Valle de texas, I'm old enough to remember that, and yes after that they became stars in mexico.greetings.

    • @allgbrodriguez3411
      @allgbrodriguez3411 7 лет назад

      +Remberto Mondragon: the Relampagos del Norte were already playing conjunto music before they went to McAllen. And, in fact, in the 70's they were called, " El conjunto de los Relampagos del Norte.
      Hymay 1970: if you would hate your parents it's because you want, too. Hating your heritage is not a prerequisite or has anything to do with being an American.
      And, Juan Mendoza: you don't know what you're talking about--nortena music is the real "pirata" of conjunto music.
      And for all of you that are in error like these three misinformed guys. Check out, RUclips, for the real history of nortena music on the video, " Los del Valle series."
