- If you are new to baking with yeast, you might be wondering what is meant by proof the yeast. I know when I started baking I wasn’t sure what they meant or why it was important.
In this video I’m sharing the how and why behind proofing yeast. It can help your yeast breads turn out great and keep you from wasting money on wasted ingredients.

Perfect instructional video, exactly what I needed! Not a bunch of BS talking or a long intro. Thank you for making it.
I always talk to my yeast. I'm like "Hey guys! Good morning. Wake up, it's time for breakfast. Do you guys want some sugar?" I think it helps.
Love it!!
😂
You are too cute. Love the way you talk to your yeast. LOL
So glad to know im not the only one 😊
Wow. I had no clue you could purchase yeast in large amounts! I always purchase in the .99 3 pack and have to buy a bunch. Thanks for the heads up. Great informative video.
This is very helpful thank you.
Thanks for the tips, I am going to be checking in here before do any sort of baking
THANK YOU for the side view. All other videos I’ve watched so far only show the top and I wasn’t sure how far down the foam should be. 🙏🏻 - New baker currently on third batch of yeast 😅
How did this work? You didn't add any sugar or starch for the yeast to feed off of.
Thank you for taking the time. Its my first time to bake bread 😂😂😂😂. Had to learn how to do this
Great video! Thank you for clarifying that I didn't know what that meant either!
I'm glad you enjoyed the video.
I needed this. I completely forgot how to proof yeast.
Thanks for the video, have a great day.
I'm glad you found it helpful.
Thanks great vid Do you store the large bag in the freezer or fridge?
Thank you so much. I learned much from your video and have just made a beautiful Swiss Farmhouse loaf using dry yeast, proofed (with milk) instead of fresh yeast as per the recipe. For someone of my culinary prowess, that is a mighty achievement. Cheers from Sydney - Dave
Wonderful!
Thanks, very helpful info. 🌼🌺🌸
You are so welcome!
Wow today I learned something new, very new to me
Glad I could help
Thank You! Very nice video. Very informative because you showed what it is supposed to look like not only from the top, but from the side too. My yeast looked a little frothy on top, but from the size view it was very flat. It did not foam up like yours. I think my yeast is almost dead. 😮
Sugar, those little rascals need to eat AND that will increase the foam. 😊👍🏼
Making baba au rum and my yeast wasn’t doing anything. Thanks to your comment I tried again with a bit of sugar (which isn’t in the recipe) and it worked! 💕
thx it help me on school for cooking
Thank you!
Mam your yeast powder is really looking beautiful and awesome mam 👋😀👍👌🇮🇳💐🌹
Thank you
Hi ur video was very useful
I added sugar and instant yeast in water..the foam came and yeast went doubled...but it had a bad smell so I throw it away...how to check proofing of yeast through its smell ?
It should smell like yeast. Was your yeast expired?
Does this method work for any liquid at the correct temperature? I have a gluten free bread recipe for 1 1/2 cups of milk. Would I just use 1 cup of milk & follow your process?
It should. As long as you get some bubbles on top you'll know your yeast is good.
Thank you, I am trying to make brioche bread and needed this after a failed attempt ☹️
I hope your next loaf turns out great.
You don't add sugar or flour to feed the yeast, when proofing it?
What happen if u leave the proof yeast out longer than 5 mins, like 2 to 3 hrs. Does the yeast still work?
Oh I don't know about that. I think I would start over with more yeast to be safe.
I bought the same exact brand of yeast, same 32 oz, did exactly what you did, the day I bought it, and it's still looked completely dead
Mine had very thin foam on top. Guessing no good
Can you proof Yeast in milk?
can instant yeast be proofed like this too?
instant yeast doesnt needed to be proofed
I tried to do this and well it works if you add sugar , if you omit sugar it never raises , and even with the sugar it raises but not that much either but it does
How likely is it for yeast well within it's due date not to prove active? Since some bakers, and/or some recipes throw the dry yeast into other dry ingredients how much of a chance are they taking that the yeast is no good?
If it's within the use by date it should be fine. I do make a few recipes for bread that call for it to be placed in with the dry ingredients and I make sure I have fresh yeast on hand when I make those recipes to be sure it will work.
So I just pulled yeast out of my fridge this morning that has a 2102 expiration date, and it foamed up just fine (without sugar). I wondered myself how long yeast might be good after it’s due date. I guess you just proof the yeast to see if it is still alive... but I’m still just learning/experimenting. That yeast has been in the fridge since we bought it. Goes to show how much we bake.
Not a huge risk - most use by dates are just to protect the manufacturer from angry customers. If the yeast has been kept dry and out of the hot sun it will be good for years after the use by date. Some yeast (Instant yeast) it's recommended that you don't dissolve or prove the yeast in water, you're supposed to mix it into the dry ingredients first.
Can you save proofed yeast? If yes how & how long?
I don't think you can save proofed yeast. It's best to use it right away.
@@frugalfamilyhome thanks for the info.
What about the sugar??
You dont add any sugar?
What type of kind of sugar can you use to feed your yeast? Can you use stevia or erythritol? I don’t purchase regular sugar any more. Would like to make some pizza dough for my son.
You can use flour instead of add a little sugar and it will help to proof the yeast. I have a no rise pizza dough recipe video too, you can find it here, ruclips.net/video/NVhRDlJHAbQ/видео.html
Regarding proofing yeast FOR BREAD : while proofing, of course the yeast has to be MIXED TOGETHER with water/sugar…so how, after proofing, do I add to my recipe for bread when it says that liquids must go in first and that the yeast has to go in very last on top of the dry ingredients?
Is this a bread recipe for a bread machine?
@@frugalfamilyhome yes
okay, but what do I do after I proofed the yeast, what do I do with it?
You would add it to the other ingredients in your bread recipe. This bread recipe is one to try, frugalfamilyhome.com/food/recipes/frugal-homemade-bread-recipe
no sugar in this?
I also noticed that you did not add any sweetener to the water, when I did that the yeast died dead and I had to dump it. Explain??
I usually sprinkle in a little flour into the water. But I've proofed my yeast without any sweetener or flour before and it worked great in the recipe. If your yeast died without sugar, I would say the water was probably too warm for the yeast? Or possibly it was too old?
You didn't add any sugar.I don't know how your yeast even frothed.
Same here. I've never seen directions for proving yeast that didn't include sugar. Maybe I should try it myself to see.
Wait, you didn't even use sugar? Maybe my temp is off. I can't get it to work.
so everyone knows, active and instant yeast are two different things.
Is she okay? She sounds like she's out of breath the whole time. Like she went jogging while talking on the video. 😅
Sounds like she record the whole reading in one take. Try talking for 4 minute straight
@@kimng4337 yeah, that's exactly what it sounds like. No breaks.
Why do u sound out of breath
You took 4 minutes to say what could have been said in 30 secs.
