Spending A Fortune Making My Kyosho Fantom Slower + Beginners Soldering Guide For Fitting A New ESC

  • In this video, I fit a budget version of the Kyosho 240S ESC that's almost half the price but in reality it's the exact same ESC. The Performance P1 Control ESC requires a battery connector and the A, B and C motor cables need to be soldered directly to the motor. I cover the steps needed to accomplish this install.
    I fit the super expensive Kyosho Le Mans 480T brushless motor before realising its actually made my Fantom pan car slower!

    I had a flu over the christmas holidays and i was really really bored. When i‘ve first seen the kyosho fantom rere‘s i was really blown away. As a kid i was at a hobby fair. I was into buggys (still am) at the time. But there was a kyosho fantom in a showcase, actually two, one with the body on and one chassis. I just thought that‘s the most beautiful thing i‘ve ever seen. Didn‘t even need to ask my parents i just knew i‘ll never be able to get something like this, the just wouldn‘t understand what impact that made. By some wonder i one day got a Marui Ninja but that was it for years(decades). I remember me Standing on the side of the indoor racetrack at the fair and seeing people racing these fantoms and i couldn‘t believe my eyes. How could people make such complicated and precise things just to race for fun? I have seen myself again just beeing at the size to be too small to watch over the barrier so i had to crouch to see the racing. I couldn‘t hear my dad say let‘s go see other things (he was there for damn boring model trains). I only drove an old model train he once gave me to secretly shoot it with an air rifle when he wasn‘t around. Since he hid the bullets, i shot it with screws. Model trains deserve to be shot.
    So nowadays i knew i need to have one as long as they are available. Just wich one?
    So i ordered the gold crc-II first. All the kyosho carbon bling. The 480 gold brushless and the kyosho esc. Cost me a fortune and it will be a shelf queen (still not built yet). Then i thought damn i want to be able to drive one! I ordered the first version you have in the video. Then i thought i want the damn green 480t motor. Found one on the bay (expensive). Also again with the kyosho esc. Found out when i ordered the carbon parts for the gold one i also accidentally ordered the carbon top plate for the white/green one. So now what to do. Both should be shelf queens. I went to the local hobby shop „to buy glue“. And oh my… i‘ve seen a yellow shiny box from far away. My friend seen it too and just said i know what you just seen. The damn crc-II re-re. All the subconcious trickery brainy stuff went off. I said i can‘t buy that too. Friend said you‘ll buy it anyways might aswell get it over with. Went home with the box, HW electronics, now this will be the driving model. Forgot the glue of course…
    So last weekend i drove through half of Switzerland to have my first experience on a race track in my 48years of life. Finally! Others were much faster, more skilled, modern cars. But the feeling i had was i was standing on clouds. Bad setup, had no clue, enjoyed every second. My 2s went running and running i didn‘t expect that. Still have the gold and the white/green to build. My impulsive compensatory shopping spree felt wholesome and healing in a strange way.
    The proportions of the fantom, the thick wheels compared to modern pancars, it‘s just e perfect enjoyment. My best experience of loosing control. Long story sorry…

    1 tip when soldering deans.
    Fit a blank to the plug to ensure the tabs are in a true position otherwise if you heat the body / tabs too much the tabs can move out of alignment causing poor connections.
    It’s why I use xt60’s as the body is not effected by heat due to the material.

    Hi Gavin, Great video, with some great tips! I have all Kyosho Brushless Motors, both 240S and the 480T, hooked up to the right ESC, they are super fast. When I first got them, I used the Kyosho Le Mans ESC, and they were all super slow, but when hooked up to a SkyRC ESC correctly setup, they were faaaaaast. Gavin, you were saying there is a program card for that Performa ESC (Maybe thats what I need to setup the Kyosho ESC) Kyosho does not seem to have a program card... I am still looking into the ESC issue. But I can assure you that its not a Motor issue.

      I'm afraid the motor is slow. It has 14,400 rpm at 7.4V. And that's not enough. Needs a different gear ratio maybe.

    Try the brushed motor with the tachometer and repeat the calc. Then you’ll have a reference and know if it’s your calc or the setup or the tachometer

    Nice video as always!
    Brushless: 1950kv x 8.4v = 16,380rpm
    Vintage Brushed: 2470kv x 8.4v = 20,748rpm
    16380/ 20748rpm = 78% (looks like 22% of speed got chopped off)
    23/37 mph = 62% (based on your math but 23mph is derived from minimum distance, actual distance is more due to momentum and propulsion physics)

    Brushless motors require lower gear ratios than "equivalent" brushed motors. Also doesn't help that Kyosho's brushless motors are pretty slow for their turn ratings. They look pretty but aren't exactly fast.

    • @keithcarpenter5254
      @keithcarpenter5254 3 года назад

      It depends on the kv of the motor. Thats measured speed at 1volt. Brushed motors are much simpler. Less turns,more revs,less torque.

      The 480 brushless is just slow per nature. Get a 240 if you want something better than a brushed. And get a TP if you want to go fast.

    ?Only the external appearance changes, not the performance.

  • @guillermomora6178
    @guillermomora6178 3 года назад +1

    Are you using the same battery? Was it charged at the same level? Do you have a trim on the throttle?
    When the tire spins, it changes it's diameter a bit, so the diameter you measured may be underestimated.
    Could it be reversed? Tamiya' esc have 50% throttle on reverse, and some brushed motors are reversed too, so if you plug things backwards, it looks like they are correct, but in fact your esc is reversing (which could be slower)
    It could be that your gps sensor is off, you can validate it driving your real car with Google maps and see the speed on it vs your cluster and the gps used for the previous test.

    Your maths is dead right. Looking at it another way. The old motor rpm was 22000 if I remember correctly. The new motor is 14430 at 7.4v. 14430/22000 = 0.66 0.66 x 37mph = 24.26mph.
    Says on kyosho site that it 'includes blue anodized parts to change external appearance to a 480s.
    Looks good though and the battery should last ages.
    New spur and pinion should sort it.

  • @Thomasmoston

    Isn't that a 21.5t brushless? The turns aren't the same to brushed and will always be slower than brushed with the same number of turns. That motor will be around the equivalent to a stock 27t brushed in terms of rpm.

  • @MarJay1980

    I assume that's lead free solder? I have tried with this type of solder before and it doesn't seem to work that well. I ended up digging out an ancient reel of lead solder as I recall?

  • @CarminesRCTipsandTricks
    @CarminesRCTipsandTricks 3 года назад +2

    All of the Maths are correct. 21.5T Brushless and 22T Brushed are NOT the same power levels!!
    21.5 Brushless is comparable to a 35T Brushed! 😲
    ... You would need a 13.5T Brushless motor to have comparable, or slightly better Speed.
