The Pancake isn't a bad plane, per se: I did unlock the Tiny Tims for my F-84B from the Pancake. But I think it's just something you gotta grind if you want the awesomeness that is the F2H. Now please note that I stuck with the bombs for pretty much all of my time on the XF5U.
When you say one of the downfalls of XF5U is altitude performance that's rather incorrect. It has great climb rate, but not so great ceiling.
Never flown this plane, got to the XF-90 via the F6U > F2H - I hated the P38J so much, I just abandoned it. Never got all the equipment unlocked. but I'm tempted to go back to this line to try the F7F. This sounds like it's got the 20's which i'm a big fan of. so I might get some enjoyment out of trying this plane out.
Glad you were able to take advantage of the F6U (one if my faves) to get the XF-90!
Did you get the 38mm on the P38s? That makes the difference. I really love the P38s, was almost going to do a video on the J today instead of the XF5U
@@PostalMonkey I couldn't stand it long enough to be honest, I didn't have the free xp to unlock the gun, so I was stuck with everything almost stock. everyone has said get the gun and you'll enjoy it....but honestly I just don't see that being true. It could change now that I can pretty much get it to elite status...but time will tell, I have too many other lines I'm focused on at the moment to worry about back tracking

Well f7f is very good l love it. You must try it.
It's always good to see the reality of this game where one side will dominate the other and when you are on the weaker bot side even great skill will not be enough to overcome the AI deficit. Yes, if your bots (and human teammates of course) did better then camping the mine would have worked better. I've been in this map with my BF 109 E and only shot down bombers to control the mine and won because I wasn't MM assigned to the crappy bot side.
The reality of WoWP is quite often just getting assigned to the better bot side means a win. That is always just a flip of the coin by the MM, "heads" I win (superior AI) "tails" I lose (inferior AI). This part of WoWP where the battlefield isn't level (one side is clearly superior to the other side) is what we all could do without. Especially the unfairness of the min/max range of how much HP damage a bullet does (both sides should be equal on this all the time).
random comment, the fatter cooling towers have less hit points than the smaller water towers. (or at least it feels that way)
I just unlocked the pancake yesterday. Thus I have a stock grind to look forward to. I will give this tank build a go and see what I can do with it.
Using a gunsight/goa load out tuned to fire starting because of the HMGs. (maybe incendiary ammo if i have some laying around)
Ill probably swap out for rbc's when i unlock the cannons.
And rounding it out with an advanced engine protection i had laying around.
The hard part was deciding pilot skills. I had a 6 point pilot unassigned.
Like all the heavies before it, the guns are center mounted. So marksman; as useful as it is in other planes like the mustangs, isnt needed here imo. Normally those points would go toward engine guru. With ABE/ADE/FF to fill out a ten point pilot
Which is fine in a P-38 or F7F.
In the end i went with a protection focus.
Battle tested because tier 8 tailgunners are not screwing around. Also the reduction in critical damage penalties which no one talks about will mean alot here. because i have no control surface protections beyond a repair kit.
Protection Expert. If you are going to go tank, you might as well go all in.
The last two points went toward demo expert.
Ordinarily a 1000lb bomb can "almost" take out a medium hard ground target. Demo Expert removes that "almost" from the equation.
And I get two of them. he he heh
So ill probably get more use out of that then the 2% manuverability buff of ABE
Ill report back with how that works out.
Survivability is the way to go for sure. And get those 20mms ASAP!

Well the F2H is a godsend afterwards, but yeah the stock Pancake grind is rough
