  • I did a video on this tune about a decade ago and recently had a request to revisit some of these old lessons, including this one. The Butterfly is most peoples' first slip jig - made mainstream famous in the movie The Secret of Roan Inish - because the melody is simple, but with loads of room for ornamentation and variation.

    This is one of the first tunes I tried to learn, before getting a tutor. I literally was just revisiting it, I didn't do a good job first time around. This video is great though, trying again now

    Yo, Sean, your embellishments on this are fantastic👏 makes it sound like a different tune than other versions I’ve heard.

    Why do you have the red stripe on your whistle? I’ve been curious about that for a while now and thought I’d ask.

      I used to tour with a band that played songs in all sorts of weird keys, so I brought a D whistle (this one), an Eb, and a C - all of which were in the same spot on stage. So on a dark stage I needed a way to identify the D whistle since I used that one the most, so this piece for red stage tape identified it :)

    Wat are the differences between slip jigs and single or double jigs?

    • @whistletutor
      @whistletutor  3 года назад +1

      Slip jigs are 9/8 whereas single and double jigs are both 6/8 - single/double are different in the phrasing (single = "humpty-dumpty", double = "hip-it-ty hop-it-ty"

    It's a great (and pretty popular) tune, any suggestions for another tune that would pair well with it?

    • @whistletutor
      @whistletutor  4 года назад +3

      I always like Em to G, so any good G slip jig would work I bet. Maybe something like Na Ceannabhain Bhana?

    Great video, but impossible to repeat this tune (: it would be interesting if anyone can post a video where they managed to play it. I mean beginners.

      Start by just playing it without the ornaments
