This is easily one of the most beautiful scores written for any movie, yet it has been unaccountably neglected and nearly forgotten over the years. The movie itself was a great success in it's day and it is still highly regarded by today's critics for it's top class production values, wonderful cast and the fact that filming took place in London locations many of which no longer exist. Maybe some day this wonderful music will get the recognition it so richly deserves.

I totally agree with that... i was born in 1995 and it was my first "horror" movie at 7 yo... I was not really understanding english in that time (i am japanese) but i remember i had watched it as any other tv show kids... another kid "level" i would say "(^ . ^)"

Witchfinder General theme by The Roberto Mann Orchestra. Another horror film with a beautiful film score.

@@sweetnsourpuss Many of my preferred actors are coming from UK and that is probably why my english accent is coming from there (problem to pronounce my "R" letter). UK movies influenced me a lot in my teen age and gradually, I learnt that way. When I was learning english (high school), I was so confused that the feeling i had was as if i was not coming from japan at all and the teacher did not have my "accent" and I had problem to understand him "(¬ . ¬)"...
Over all this, since my young age I preferred to watch horror movies (mental, psychologic, ghost, mystery, legend) you name it, that my mum said : "Azumi ! That XYZ movie is not for you !! Look, 14-16 yo you only have 8.. watch girl kid tv shows or turn the tv off !" I was raging (grrr) because kid stuffs were made for.. kids, I just wanted something more ehm... made for my spirited age and gradually, 9-10 yo, I continued to watch horror movies secretly until i reached my 12-13. Near my 15, it became a pure and hard drug ; it was a passion, a need in my life, i wanted my daily horror dose to feel the story, trying to find the message behind it and since then (i am 28) i have over 700 dvd of horror (including avi, mkv and mp4 files). In my heart, i am still this "young girl who needs a daily horror dose", it's mental but it's me "(^ . ^)"

This is one of the most beautiful and evocative scores from any movie composed by the late Michael Lewis. A wonderful theme for a wonderful movie which utilised the talents of many great British actors, and for some it was a last hurrah. For Jack Hawkins and Denis Price this was their swansong and what a movie to end their careers with. And for Ian Hendry who played Devlin it proved to be his last role of any consequence as he sank further into alcoholism and died penniless. But his life was filled with tragedy as his wife Janet Monro who starred with Sean Connery in Darby O Gill and the Little People, died a few years earlier when she choked while drinking a cup of tea. Such is life and sometimes tragedy begets great art and this movie comes pretty close to that. A movie made in a London which is no more, performed by actors who have all since left this troublesome life...Methinks I doth drink too much!..goodnight!

I first watched this movie as a scary night popcorn feast in the 70s with my mom n sister! My mom loved Vincent Price movies. I was 12 and I was always haunted by the music in the best possible way. I stalked the TV channels in hopes of catching the movie on just to hear the music! I of course LOVED the movie and growing up was a huge fan the Vincent Price! I own this move on VHS and digitally thanks to technology I can see it anytime and I never get tired of watching it. It is my cozy on a raining day with a bowl of popcorn go to movie. I am reminded of my mom, an awesome group of actors and actresses, and that music score...and the scenes in London....Priceless!!!

What a beautiful piece of scoring for what was essentially a B movie, but oh, what a movie. The magic for me was the use of stunningly beautiful incidental music to accompany scenes of horrific content such as Arthur Lowes beheading, where the music was particularly sweet
Vincent Price and the thoroughly British cast, who for the most part, are sadly not with us now, make this film special. Will never forget the first time I caught this one friday night at about 11.30pm. MAGIC

I've seen this movie many times and there is no doubt it's a genuine classic, there is something strangely hypnotic about the combination of great actors, top class production values and a sad beautiful theme. Milo O Shea who played the eyed policeman died just last week at 86, his silent partner Erik Sykes died a few months ago at nearly 90, while for Ian Hendry who played Devlin, the critic who survived, this was his last hurrah......he died some years later forgotten and broke in his mid 50s.

When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth - complete
    Crescendo

Yeah, Beyond the Grave was the one with David Warner?
I also love Asylum which had the greatest cast. How they get Charlotte Rampling in this?

I think too, that this is good film. True, It didn´t have Harryhausen effects, but it has a wonderful atmosphere and Doug McClure was good in it. And we have Susan Penhaligon!. ; )
    But the sequel was awful.
BTW: Another fine Gamley score is And Now the Screaming Starts.

LOL, this poster, much like the trailer (and the ones for the Phibes movies) pretty much tells you how the victims die :)
