- I’m developing Ultranova, an action-adventure platformer. In the process, I’m analyzing successful games to learn what makes them captivating.
I must decide whether to make a linear level-based platformer or if I should make a non-linear Metroidvania game that encourages you to explore and unlock one large world.
In this video, I look at Hollow Knight, an extremely popular 2D Metroidvania platformer released in February 2017 by Team Cherry, a small Australian indie team.

Yes, those will come! I will analyze a few more games and then I am recreating Ultranova in Unreal Engine to capitalize on Nanite and Lumen to make it visually rich yet being "low poly". So DevLogs will follow, I am really excited about the process ahead.

Haha, yes, a bit odd on this channel, but very important topic. It is one thing to learn how to technically make a game, and I spent 20 years doing that, and it has taken me until recent years to really prioritize good game design choices before you dive deep into development. A few more videos like this to come with other platformers.

When I see the incorporated footage of ultranova, I'm thinking that the ennemies chase you too much, you trade the exploration for fleeing which is not the same fun imo 🤔

Great game even though i like the Blasphemous art style more.
I can imagine there are quite a few favorites between groups of players between pixel art, hand drawn, vector, and 2.5D 3D. I just searched Blasphemous, and I can see it would appeal to some but a bit creepy for me =)

Honestly hollow knight is good but thats it just good. It feels extremely overrated for me for one main reason i never felt like i had a purpose. The characters you meet just talk nonsense and also seem out of place.
Why'd u think that npcs seems out of place tho and what kind of purpose did u wanted?
@@ThatDwag69 I finish the game and didn't know what the story was or why I was doing anything up to that point. The NPCs I met didn't speak English it was weird. I'm guessing you have to play more of the game after the credits and find out more but by that point I was bored with the game. The weapon is the same the entire way through just a few magic type upgrades but the nail is the only weapon. I know not all games are for everyone this one just wasn't for me.
