  • Q&A with Yvonne Strahovski. Moderated by Danielle Turchiano, Variety.
Adapted from the classic novel by Margaret Atwood, The Handmaid's Tale is the story of life in the dystopia of Gilead, a totalitarian society in what was formerly the United States. Facing environmental disasters and a plunging birthrate, Gilead is ruled by a twisted fundamentalism in its militarized ‘return to traditional values'. As one of the few remaining fertile women, Offred (Elisabeth Moss) is a Handmaid in the Commander’s household, one of the caste of women forced into sexual servitude as a last desperate attempt to repopulate the world. In this terrifying society, Offred must navigate between Commanders, their cruel Wives, domestic Marthas, and her fellow Handmaids - where anyone could be a spy for Gilead - all with one goal: to survive and find the daughter that was taken from her.

I think with this role Yvonne Strahovski is proving that she grew up and matured as an actress. I love the way she approached the character and the duality applied to it because this way you will never know what to expect from Serena.

This character is not like-able, but she’s my favorite character in the series because she’s so complex. You love to hate her and see her challenged!

Yvonne comes across really well. Impressive acting by all three of them in what can only be described as one of the most harrowing scenes.

I like that they picked a young, attractive, otherwise healthy couple to play the part of Mr. and Mrs Waterford. In the book, they were a plain looking couple in their 60s. Having a young healthy couple play the part of a sterile couple really drives the point home about the majority of people being sterile. Even the young and healthy have reproductive issues in that world.

Oh yes! And what it also does is it shows how inorganic the hierarchy is. Here they are, all basically the same age, but living in this environment where no one has earned their status through wisdom or accomplishment; those things don't matter in this new world. You can have a neo-natal surgeon, working as a Martha (the lowest in the hierarchy), a famous writer or college professor as a handmaid, and a 15-year-old-child as a wife! I think that had they done this any differently, we might be able to better accept the hierarchy and it wouldn't be such a shock to us. It would also show less in common between the women, when the whole point of the show is that NONE of the women are very different from each other at all: they're all smart, educated, and strong. But the hierarchy makes it impossible for them to get together and bond because Gilead thrives on making sure women hate each other.

It's nice to see such an great Interview with so interesting Questions. And I just love the fact that Yvonne sees her Character as complex as it obviously is. And explain how and what feelings, emotions that drives her Character. :-)

Her character is loathsome and completely despicable, and yet she manages to humanize Serena. You hate her 99% of the time but she manages to tease out that small bit of sympathy when Serena's suffering.

Serena is the most exciting character to watch in each episode of the show. Even though we are introduced her clearly as a bitch in the pilot, I cant help keeping my hope that she could turn to the right track in her life in any episode. Yvonne knows the viewers very well and she plays us as Serena on that point with the help of the writers.
Serena is the woman in need of support system for her mental health. Her family before Gilead (her mother, her husband) has already been terrible and pushed her to be unhinged. So much so that I dont think she is manipulative or strong. She is opposite of that.
I can’t give up on Serena to have a supportive society to live a dignified life (many women living in extremely conservative society in the world need it like she does) even after I can imagine what would be her faith by the end of season 6 😢
