Love it or hate it, its still impressive as hell that this product came out more than 20 years ago as a fully programmable tube driven preamp. All in a 1U rack space too with minimal updates since because they got the design down right the first time.
I never owned the TriAxis, but I had a similar, preamp that I sold a while back, called the Rocktron Pirannha. I don't understand why amplifier's never gained traction with the programmable preamp stage. I currently own a H&K Coreblade, and it is Programmable. I really love the flexibility midi programmable guitar rigs provide.
For sure they are the easiest on road aftet you have set all the midi stuff with your rig, just a push of a button to change all parts of the signal chain. ADA was very favored late 80's or early 90's like this but I guess it was the hype about new thing when everyone switched to ADA but in the end many liked the easy and simple to use, read and understand knobs. Like myself, I personally see the advantages of MIDI configurable gear and Kempers and Axes and everything but they aren't for me. I feel the mojo coming from that simple interface with few knobs and when THE sound is only as far as turning the gear on, not necessarily tweaking it. I do admire how far the technology has taken guitar gear though, like I said, it's a miracle for touring.
The fact that you can't get a decent fully midi controlled all tube head in 2022 blows my mind when there are so many products out there. I know the rectifier and a lot of ENGL has a lot of midi controlled stuff but not the level something like the Triaxis has and potentially an amp could have.
This is IMO the best amp demo video you've done Ola, really enjoy you talking in real time whilst playing rather than done post production in a voice over etc. Also fucking christ I need a triaxis now :(
I put one of these in front of an Alexis Quadraverb GT+ with a 16 band graphic into a Marshall 8008 power amp and 1960 stereo converted cab. With the noise gate in the Quadraverb you literally could not tell the amp was on at all until you hit a note. People like Orange Goblin (or Our Haunted Kingdom as they were at the time) used our amp. It simply crushed. People tried to get that Metallica "Black Album" combined with Sepultura "Chaos AD" tone on stage, and that just got it perfectly every time. I stupidly sold it when I was broke one day...and the next month I was just as broke but without my Triaxis. Big, big mistake.
Hey Ola, can you please do a comparison of a low end guitar with stock pickups like an Ibanez gio or a cheap jackson versus one of your higher end Washburn guitars?
😢very good sound and the distortion is meticulous absolutely thank you Mesa Boogie I am so happy to have found you 😮 Triaxis gives ways and love is all about the god of all
This is the best sounding preamp I have ever owned. It is really flawless and well built throughout. The thing with this preamp is you must run it with the poweramp built for it in my case is the Mesa Boogie 2:90 amp. My mate bought himself a triaxis and then paired it with his Peavey Classic 100w power amp and it sounded good..ish but when I run his triaxis through my Mesa 2:90 the difference was staggering. The 2:90 was around 5 times the price costing £2450 vrs his Peavey £500 and you can hear the difference immediately. If you own a triaxis and you love it then pls spend the extra cash on the Mesa power amp because they were practically built for each other and it's well worth the extra cash. The detail the 2:90 gives is stunning and you hear all the complex mids and huge lows without even a hint of wooliness going on... just massive power and beautiful on the ears:)
The Marshall Valvestate Poweramp out at the time - the 8008 - worked exceptionally well with it as well, with the advantage of being much lighter and again much cheaper!
Sounds killer. Kinda like the lit up numbers for settings too. Sometimes I feel like I can't get knobs to the exact same point they were before. With numbers it's easy to remember.
Man that tone!!! This has me seriously considering building a rack rig. Seems like it's super versatile and I play mostly metal but I have contributed guitar to everything from country to pop and funk etc. This thing seems like it could handle all that and sound good doing it!
I always wondered about these. I have the mesa 2x50w power amp with an 11 rack for the preamp and effects but I may have to look into ebaying one of these. Sounds pretty good just running dry. Great video thanks!
It would be pretty damn cool if you re-did some of your older amp tests. All of them are great, but some of the older ones have poor quality audio due to lower video quality from back in the day. Also, some of them only have the recorded/mixed song and no solo track or playthrough.
Sounds great on the Mark IIC+ setting, with the Gain on 6.0 and the Lead Drive on 10. Otherwise, I don't like that Mesa Boogie scooped and too fat type of sound. I prefer when it chugs!
I have 2 Triaxis that sound killer. Unfortunately both have the TX5 board so Lead 1 Red doesn't sound like this at all. This sounds like a Recto board which makes the LD 1 Red far more aggressive...Having said that, you get the Triaxis for the LD2 modes anyway...
I´m planning on buying a triaxis to have the same distortion sound at lower volumes. Right now i have a mark4 but it´s difficult to achieve that in an apartment. For power amp i was thinking the old 50/50 or 2:90 depending on the result i´m interested in. My question is this: Has your mark2c+ a simulclass output stage or is it class AB ? Also, do you remember if the volumes on the amp and preamp were too high to achieve that tone? Thanks, Chris.

Hey ola I have a question. Im debating between this and the grandmeister deluxe 40. I love the mesa tones this preamp has and i was wondering if the ultra channel is anywhere near this kind of sound (mesa mark iv). Im personally looking for a wintersun base tone and they used the triaxis extensively. The grandmeister on the other hand has amazing features and price wise in my country i can get both around for the same price. I know i will have to get a power amp for the triaxis. What do you say? :)
I have the same issues you can hear in this vid. I tend to hold on to gear and would say that it has some of the best cleans back to back with other hi gain amps, But.... big but... Flub.... can't get heavy low end with out a lot of flub, scooped or not. and you can't get the output A&B knob up with a lot of gain. I ended up pushing the signal with a tube screamer between it and the power amp. to boost the level and gain keeping the tone all the way down to hit the lows. Still felt I needed an EQ after to get the tone right.... once compensated in this way it did everything it they say it can...... Also don't get the 2 fifty.... You need to run both sides according to the manual and 90 watts a side sucks a lot of juice and the 2:90 I had would bleed the power down enough to sag into a faded level. Two fifty watt outputs = 100 and I never had a problem with my Dual Rect. at half volume most jams it's two much.
Sorry, but why changing Lead 1 Drive when playing a Lead 2 sound? As I can understand from the manual, it makes no difference. Lead 1 Drive is for the Lead 1 sounds, while Lead 2 Drive is for Lead 2 sounds.
Used to have one - used to like it until I did a head to head comparison - mesa boogie Quad preamp...The quad chewed it up and spit it out... Also, lots of people have reported multiple problems...
To be more specific it's a Triaxis with 2C+ Poweramp and Hesu 212... with an SM58 Shure. Why would you think that? And Ola doesn't use a ton of amp modelling, he uses an AX8 with real amps most of the time.
So great coming back to these old videos Ola. I'm looking into what Joe Haley of Psycroptic uses, if you haven't heard them they're an incredibly tight extreme metal band from Australia.
I heard that he was using a stereo rig for a while. Triaxis > delay (or pitch detune?) at low setting like 20ms to a stereo poweramp. So one cab on the other side of the stage was delayed a tiny bit to give the impression of 2 guitarists.
@@danec1384 Yep he confirms this in an interview. I remember doing similar with a stereo chorus pedal and a 20ms delay. Really fattens up the tone if you're the only guitarist onstage.
Never liked the Mesa, but it's infuriating how a lot of my favourite bands have cut at least one album with one and I actually like the tone. I wish they would do this rack unit for the Engl amps :P.
Actually guys the triaxis sounds were used significantly on the cleans from James' rig. Same with the high gain, that's how James' tone has the glassiness of the JC120 and the warmth of tube amps. Also on the cleans, the sound was run direct to the PA without a cabinet or cabinet emulation.
who gives a shit about the clean? the clean is more important than the distortion... you can improve the distortion on an amp, but if the clean is not good, you wont improve it at all... i give a shit about my clean, more than i do for my distortion
Ola, you are the man that can make anything sound awesome. However, I was surprised at how terrible this demo sounds. Not sure why. I used to own a Triaxis and it was brutal AF.
thats an old unit... all old preamps have noise... but the sound you get when you hit the strings (specially if the power amp is cranked) you forget about that noise and rock the shit out of it... its considered to be the best preamp ever made out there, by many people.. and when i tested it in my room, i really got to see what.. i got a reason my self too... i played already 2 gigs with it and it really made the difference in the setup... despite running it to a digital Blackstar 2x12 combo it shines like a triaxis should

You should do a demo of the ADA MP-1 if you can ever get your hands on one. Another classic heavy preamp!

Any chance you could use your actual Mk2C+ to compare against the TriAxis 2C+ mode?

Question for you all! Do you guys know any pedal that tries to capture the sound of the Triaxis/Mark series??
Thank you!!
How do you think hetfield uses this in combination with his diezal vh4
I'm not sure if a 58 was the best choice for the mic. The windscreen greatly affects the EQ.
Please do a full 7 string playthrough with the Triaxis! I’m thinking of getting this amp and i wanna know how it handles the lower tuning
Will you make a separate video for triaxis in a mix? We love to
Does the Ld 2 yellow sound like your mark 2c+ ?

What do you think about the Studio or Quad Preamp? Cheap "Mark" Tone or better get the real deal?
recommended 4 you, clear mesa boogie throttle box eq. amazing
Hey ola compare jp2c vs mark iic+
Please make a complete video of this!!!!
Does this have to plug into a head such as the dual rectifier or can it go straight to the cab??
Jake Gotta have a power amp. You can use a head.
Great video, thank you for posting it! Do you know which version this triaxis is? 1 or 2? phat mod? or the serial number?
