  • Here's how I'm making wooden beads from start to finish using some black walnut, a drill press, special bead making drill bit, and a wood bead sanding and polishing machine. Anyone can sand and polish wooden beads of nearly any size. The ones I do in this video are about 1 inch / 25mm in diameter.

Drill bit method is always problemetic. There are specialized micro lathe to cut beads. It has a "cross slide" similar to metal lathe with a hole saw attached to it. With the head chuck and hole saw both spinning, you get a very spherical bead with 2 tiny stems that can be easily sand smooth. There are attachments to sand that as well if you make a lot fo beads. Than there is an attachment to drill a hole in the middle. I will recommend polishing them in the machine you have, then drill the through hole so the edge of the hole can stay crisp. A vibrating tumbler may be an alternative to the machine you have since the turned beads are spherical enough that you do not need sanding to change their forms.

I was thinking maybe a rock tumbler might work?
