- Today I review the MC Jupiter-9, a Soviet-made 85mm f/2 lens with a multi-coating. Originally a copy of the Carl Zeiss Sonnar, the Jupiter-9 carved out its own place in history as a standout portrait lens.

Very good portrait lens for the ff. Get one not MC version from my grandfather. He used it on a Zenith camera in the 80s. I really like the calm bokeh of this lens. It takes beautiful photos in combination with Canon 5D Classic colors! Thanks for the video!
Nice, the non-MC version is great too from what I've heard, they all have the beautiful bokeh. Thanks!
Cheers much 😊 what's lens flares like when stopped down?
@@lonceysbusiness333 Basically just one big circular blue flare and not much else, uploaded a sample pic so you can see here: sovietlensreviews.com/wp-content/uploads/PTX2031-scaled.webp
Hi, thanks for your videos and your effort, I’m a huge fun and collector of russian lenses aswell.
I have two copies of this lens.
I was not aware of the possibility to fix it.
Do you have any link or videos to show this procedure?
Thank you
@@gabberattak Thanks! I don't have an example unfortunately, but I can try to make a quick tutorial sometime and post it as a short.
Infinity focus can be an issue if the internal spacers are not correct. Certain models are better then others so I have been told on RUclips. My copy is a L39. It does fine for the most part. 85mm lenses are meant for portraits (or close focus on a subject or object) anyway, best to use it for that purpose rather then as a walk around or landscape. It ain't going to impress you if you do.
Thank you for all that information. I had one of these lenses and it was a bad example. Sold it. Maybe should have tried to rebuild it.
I almost did the same before deciding to try and rebuild it!
@@SovietLensReviews Hello, What exactly needs to be rebuilt so that it would be sharp?
@@thegame4611 The very last optical block at the back of the lens just needs to be adjusted to be at the correct distance.
G'day .... Another great video, love your work... I'm a big fan of Jupiter 11 (135/f4) which is also great for portrait and much much better than J9....
Cheers, completely agree, love my Jupiter-11. Even though it's older, it's much sharper too.
This lens it's a bijoux. It has the best skin color rensition indeed...but i personally prefer Jupiter 11 f 4..
Hello, I just found your channel and enjoy viewing your videos. I have a question that is a little off topic. What lenses would you suggest for shooting with a MFT camera? I just moved to Russia a few years ago and want to take advantage of the abundance of soviet lenses here. However, most reviewers seem to only use full frame cameras. Your suggestions will be appreciated.
Hey Jim. MFT using Soviet lenses is a bit trickier as you're really cropping in, and Soviet options for wide angles aren't plentiful. I'd say try find a Mir-24N 35mm f/2 to start.
Thank you for your response. I have an additional question. Are the Soviet export lenses (with English lettering) any different quality wise than the lenses for the domestic Russian market?@@SovietLensReviews
Another great video! I'm also a fan of the Jupiter 9's rendering of skin tones. This lens and the Tair 11 seems to both possess that odd, magical ability to make faces look good. I will say, that the Jupiter 9, at 85mm is a great "go to" when looking for this focal length...certainly more functional and less busy than a Helios 40. This strikes me as a Newspaper photo lens.
Thanks again for another cool video. I love your focus charts!
Thanks! Agreed about the faces, it really does render them well.
I have the ltm and contax versions and sold a m42 one. rangefinder versions are better in colour .
Interesting, I know those rangefinder versions had earlier/less coatings which probably helps.
