Your excellent videos about Lisbon were very useful for our trip this past February. This one in particular gave us much confidence in using public transport and I think we tried them all: metro, bus, tram, funicular, elevator, ferry, Bolt and train to Sintra. About Tram #28: we took it on a Monday morning in February thinking it would not be too busy. But you are correct that there can be tourists any time of the year (it was particularly warm that weekend) and so we waited over an hour to get on at Martim Moniz. However, we took it again in the afternoon from the other end (Campo Ourique) and there was no waiting! It did fill up rapidly afterwards.
This video is one of the most useful I’ve ever watched. You explain everything so well and there’s wasn’t any unnecessary distracting anecdotes or jokes to break the learning. I’ve been to Lisbon many times and have walked most everywhere all the time. I’ve only occasionally taken the train and tram in the past. I never knew all these forms of transport were available. I feel so excited to take the lift and elevators on my next trip. Thank you! 😊
Many thanks for your kind words, Mercedes. As an update, the transport card is now called Navegante, works in exactly the same way as described in the video. All the best!
Travelling here in two months for first time. I'm clueless until I came across your video. Now all I need to figure out is a planned itinerary. Thank you❤❤
Extremely helpful. We’ve used your videos for travel in Spain making transportation such an easy way to navigate. We anticipate our upcoming trip to Portugal (Lisbon) to be much easier. Thank you SO MUCH 😊
Thank you for the helpful tips. You can read all the guidebooks but your videos clearly and concisely showed how transport in Lisbon works. I particularly enjoyed the videos of the art in the metro station.
I've watched a number of videos in preparation for a trip to Lisbon (first time visiting) and your videos by far are the best, most helpful, with excellent photography and so much practical information. Obrigada!
Incredibly helpful! I just sent this to my friends who are tagging along with me to Lisbon they had questions about the system that I couldn’t answer in such a professional clear and concise way
Tony, congratulations on a extremely well explained subject which may looks and sound simple but it can be confusing for those not familiar with the small details, ie how and which transportation card to buy. I have enjoyed your videos, especially those of Magala, such a quaint and beautiful city; extremely tidy and well kept city. Kudos to you for sharing in a professional, pleasant and informative manner .
¡Hola Tio Tony! Lisbon is one of my most-visited cities in Europe; I once walked from the airport all the way to the Oriente Station/Mall which was only about 2 km and it was in autumn. I wanted to pass some time before my flight to Barcelona that evening. Also once used the Sintra Line train from Rossio to Campolide so I could see the aqueduct. Wonderful memories! - Red
Tony, thank you so much for the informative, well thought out videos. We just returned from a week in Barcelona/Montserrat and a week in Lisbon/Sintra/Setubal. Your videos (and the Citymapper app) answered most of our questions and made us feel so much better prepared. One thing I want to mention is that the "Via Viagem/Siete Colinas" card is now called "navegante" and is bright yellow. Other than that, everything else seems to be the same.
Hi Bill, many thanks for your feedback, glad to hear we were of help. Yes, Navegante replaced Viva Viagem last year, it works exactly the same. All the best.
Excellent explanation. Visiting Lisbon in upcoming November. Would love to have a 7 day transportation option for card. Would save a lot of worry and work.
That would be great for unfortunately there is no such thing. The Viva Viagem cards have been replaced by another one called Navegante, they work in exactly the same way.
Delighted to hear that! An update, the local transport card is now called Navegante, works in exactly the same way as the cards described in the video.
Great video....! :) Just a tip: Now we have a metropolitan network in Lisbon, so.. Not just in Lisbon "city", but every single transport in the metropolitan area, say Sintra, Cascais, Caparica, Almada, or even as far as Setubal or Vila Franca de Xira, work with those tickets you mentioned.. and that is Boats, Trains, Metro, Ascencores, Elétricos, Buses, and even the MTS (a type of metro/tram ..sort of the DLR in London) In the south bank, with an extensive line too.. And... Btw.. those ugly orange boats are about to disappear... The very nice blue and white Catamarans will stay, and there are very new modern ones just coming into service this year and the next, substituting most of the fleet... same with the modern trams, it's being built a much larger area for them, going into the east, but also west over the hills, and the very new trams are going to take over... including the E15... But not over the old charming ones, those are meant to stay forever.. we love them :))) In any case, those new lines/trams will go directly from Algés (west.. where the Lisbon Riviera beaches start) to Oriente (east... the new finance and entertainment center) all along the river in an amazing journey for sure...!
Thank you! Great to hear the rusty orange boats are about to disappear, they had some strange old charm but I much prefer the modern catamarans. All the best!
I love all your videos! Awesome job delivering the important information without the fluff!! I don't know if you've have this topic since you published it a year ago, but now that I'm here in Lisbon, I have found that you can easily use your Visa card and your digital wallet on your phone instead of the paper card. A big step up from needing to hassle with loading up a card at the machine.
Hi Dan, many thanks for your words. Payment with contactless cards was introduced half way through last year. We don't think it's an interesting option, as you pay the full price. And if you don't care much for discounts, you'd probably be better off taking a Bolt or an Uber car, just slightly more expensive if it's more than one of you. All the best!
Hola Tony (great name , haha it’s mine also) I am so happy to have found your channel I have tried to prepare an itinerary for our visit to Portugal and Spain You have helped in tremendous ways Thank you 🙏🏽
Most useful video for Lisbon Public Transport.I have been searching for almost 2 hours including Potugese official sites and couldnt understand much but this video is all I want. How to buy ticket, how to use metro or bus but also pass to ferry if needed, how to transfer between those, how to buy ticket and whick one has more advantages. Wonderful video ...
Delighted to hear that, Emre. Hope you'll have a great time in Lisbon. There's been a minor change, the transport card is now yellow and called "Navegante", but works in exactly the same way as described on the video for the Viva Viagem card.
This was incredibly helpful! Obrigada. I’m going to be spending 3 months near Lisboa and expect to be using these fairly often! I think I’ll watch again, after I arrive.. chegará ~
Wow you have given me confidence to travel to Lisbon again which I was there only half day with cruise ship, changed my mine to Portugal from Spain, been there many times, thank you so much
Hola Tony 😊 Portugal is in my bucket list. Your video will definitely come in very handy in the event I get to visit this beautiful country. Great helpful tips and recommendations. 👍 👍 👍 Muito obrigado Tony !!! 😊
Hola Tony, so I planted to visit Lisbon, but I'm sick 😢. I became COVID. It's so sad, but I'll come to your wonderful City. Thank you so much for this helpful Video.❤ Best greetings
thank you Tony love you man eres muy professional en lo que hace gracias mill thank you so much. we are planing to go in sep and I alway watch your videos went to Spain last year y tus videos exelentes
Just visited Lisbon, excellent public transport system, on time, no delay, clear indication! Additional information: for metro (not sure for other transport means), can use credit card directly, no need to buy ticket. I think better option for tourist, as there is fee for card, minimal loading each time €3 even at ticket office, so we wasted the remaining amount in cards
Thanks, yes, payment by credit card was introduced after we released this video. We don't think it's a good deal, you pay the full fare as opposed to a discounted fare when you pay with a card.
Dear Tony, my husband and I just returned from our first trip to Lisboa and Porto. I just wanted to thank you for all the useful information you are posting here on RUclips. Without you we would have been so lost and floundering... But thanks to your many videos, we booked hotels in ideal locations within walking distance of so many interesting places! We enjoyed the #28 Tram in Lisboa by catching it at the beginning of the line. We took a train from Lisboa to Porto (and narrowly avoided the strike that began two days after we left). We walked the Dom Luiz 1 bridge (both lower and upper spans). We ate wonderful foods (Francesinha included!) in Lisboa, Porto, and Vila Nova de Gaia. We walked and walked and walked everywhere! Climbed more stairs than I thought could ever exist. Had a wonderful dinner in a Fado House in Lisboa. And the list goes on, and on. Again, THANK YOU from the bottom of our hearts! With your expert guidance our first visit to Portugal was a rousing success! We'll be back!!!
Dear Elle and husband. You can't imagine how happy we are to hear about the success of your trip, and the role we played. You know where we are when you return to Portugal (or Spain)! All the very best to you!
excellent video and highly informative as always. we will be arriving in lisbon around 1pm. we are considering the 24h card so we can use from the airport then use in elevatores and tram till the following day.
I’m headed to Lisbon in a month and I’m sure glad I found your videos They are very well made and to understand and I’m feeling very confident that I will be able to enjoy Lisbon with a day trip to Sintra and possibly Nazare if the waves are worth it when I’m there
Hi Tony. Yet another great video. Thank you! Question, please.......for the "Zapping" option where you can load your card with Euro, is there a time expiration by which you have to use the metro and buses after loading your card? For example, we arrive on a Monday and leave on a Friday. Once we load our Viva card, do we have until Friday to use our loaded funds? Or do we have to use our loaded cards within a certain time frame after loading it with funds?
Hello, the zapping credits do not expire. But be aware you won't be refunded for any unused credit. The new transport card is called Navegante, it works exactly the same as the old Viva Viagem card.
Thank you for the information! it is wonderful, is there a difference between the colina card and the Lisboa card? Also, by chance do you have a city map divided by sections with all the important places to visit in that specific zone, including restaurants? Thank you again!!
Thank you. We don't know of any Colina card as such, but if you are referring to the 7 Colinas card, it is a transport pass identical to the Viva Viagem card. The Lisboa Card is quite different and more comprehensive, see the details on this video: ruclips.net/video/3ChNxwMCIhM/видео.html We don't have a map as such but on this video you will see the location of the main attractions in Lisbon: ruclips.net/video/GSMVJc6cNhI/видео.html
Hello Tony, great video which would help us a lot for our trip in the short future! Can you pls inform if possible to purchase a single ticket if there's still a little amount of credit left from the zapping? Thanks!
Hi Yonari, unfortunately, if there is any zapping credit left on your card you won't be able to load anything other than more zapping credit. It's quite annoying, basically, once you add zapping credit, you need to stick to zapping credit, as it's very hard to zero the credit balance.
lovely video! When you simulated buying a card, there was a 24 hour option that included ferries that you did not discuss. Does that option with ferries include the boat routes you highlighted?
Hi, we didn't covered all the options to make things easier to understand. The option with ferries include the boats going across the estuary, in our opinion, it doesn't pay off. Cheaper to pay for the boats individually. Unless you plan on spending the day coming and going by boat.
I’m hoping to come to Lisbon and areas this year . Your videos are excellent and one thing very good is that you speak slowly for everyone to understand. Query: With the Lisboa card can you get it for a week ? I need public transport for around 6 days and want just one card. Put some € on it and not have to think about a fare each trip. What do you suggest?
Hi Janz, watch this video to understand what the Lisboa Card can do for you: ruclips.net/video/3ChNxwMCIhM/видео.html It is a combo of attraction and transport pass. If you only need public transport, load either a 24 hours pass or enough credit to keep you going.
Thank you for putting together another wonderful video. Just had 1 question. When purchasing a ticket via the machine, there was an option that said "6.45 Euros - Bus/Metro Daily Ticket valid for 24 hours after 1st use". It only says Bus/Metro, but does this include the Elevadores, Electricos, and Ascensors as well ? Thank You
Hello Tony, I am planning to visit Lisbon and your videos have been very informative. Can the Zavegante Card with Zapping also be used on the Railway system (Comboios de Portugal) to Belem and Sintra?
Thank you for your excellent job! One Question about transport card. if I arrive at 9am and buy a 24 h card I will need a 2 card to put money for Sintra trip within those 24 hours (7am)?
The 24 hour card is valid for a 24-hour period. So it will be valid till 9 am the following day. You cannot pay the train to Sintra with a basic 24-hour card.
This is such a great, detailed, well-explained video!! I will be visiting Portugal for 3 days. Can you tell me if these are best options to buy Viva Viagem card: Day #1 riding Lisbon metro, specifically funiculars, lifts & trams (buy €6.45 Bus/Metro Daily Ticket?); Day #2 riding Lisbon metro & visiting Sintra (buy €10.70 Bus/Metro/Train Daily Ticket?); and Day #3 riding Lisbon metro and visiting Cacihas (buy €9.60 Bus/Metro/Ferry (Cacihas) Daily Ticket?)? Also if the 24 hour period ends mid-day the next day, do I have to keep track of that time or can I buy a new 24-hour ticket in the morning? Thank you!
Thank you, Tony. In your case, we would get a daily ticket for day #1, and then charge money credit on the card for the remaining of your stay. You will end up spending far less money than if you bought the Daily ticket for days 2 and 3. All the best!
@@ROADTRIPSpainandPortugal Your recommendation is so appreciated, thank you! Looking forward to viewing all of your videos since we plan on going to Spain after our Portugal trip!

This was incredibly helpful! Obrigada. I’m going to be spending 3 months near Lisboa and expect to be using these fairly often! I think I’ll watch again, after I arrive.. chegará ~
Excellent! Just a minor update, the transport card is now called NAVEGANTE, it works in exactly the same way.
@@ROADTRIPSpainandPortugal Obrigada ~
Wow you have given me confidence to travel to Lisbon again which I was there only half day with cruise ship, changed my mine to Portugal from Spain, been there many times, thank you so much
Many wonderful places to explore in Lisbon, hope you'll have a great time on your return!
Thank you so much for this!!❤
Our pleasure!
Great information, but so much to learn!
You welcome! Yes, public transport systems usually demand quite a lot of time and attention.
Thank you so much very good ❤😊
Our pleasure!
Hola Tony 😊
Portugal is in my bucket list. Your video will definitely come in very handy in the event I get to visit this beautiful country. Great helpful tips and recommendations. 👍 👍 👍
Muito obrigado Tony !!! 😊
Por nada, Jasper! There are more Portugal videos in the pipeline, so stay tuned! All the best!
We love Lisbon. What a great city
👍
Hola Tony, so I planted to visit Lisbon, but I'm sick 😢. I became COVID. It's so sad, but I'll come to your wonderful City. Thank you so much for this helpful Video.❤ Best greetings
Hope you get well soon! All the best!
Gud video & helpful bro.
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Çok teşekkürler Tony...😉
Rica ederim!
thank you Tony love you man eres muy professional en lo que hace gracias mill thank you so much. we are planing to go in sep and I alway watch your videos went to Spain last year y tus videos exelentes
Many thanks for you words, Vinny. ¡Un saludo cordial!
Thank you
👍
Thanks!
That's very kind of you, Jose. At the beginning of March we will publish a video with our Lisbon top 20 attractions. All the best.
excellent video and highly informative as always. we will be arriving in lisbon around 1pm. we are considering the 24h card so we can use from the airport then use in elevatores and tram till the following day.
Sounds like an excellent choice, Anna.
Thanks!
P.S. I'm also @ladolcevita71-d2t. Trying to figure out why this one came up. All good though!
Our pleasure!
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Muito obrigado
Por nada!
Nice
👍
I’m headed to Lisbon in a month and I’m sure glad I found your videos They are very well made and to understand and I’m feeling very confident that I will be able to enjoy Lisbon with a day trip to Sintra and possibly Nazare if the waves are worth it when I’m there
Delighted to hear that! Hope the timing is right for catching some great waves in Nazaré.
Excellent video but wish it was posted before my trip last month.😀
You'll be able to use it when you return to Lisbon next time!
wow thank you!!!
Our pleasure!
❤
24:45 about zapping, can I take out the remaining value back when I finish the trip?
Thank you so much Tony. All of your videos are many helpful.
Thank you! Unfortunately, you cannot recover any unused zapping credits. All the best!
👏👏. Good video - thanks. Question - Is there an app for your phone to help first time visitors to navigate the Lisbon transport system?
Thanks, Doug, not that we know of. We use Google Maps to get around.
lovely video!
Thank You
Hi David, it includes all the modes of transport you mention and we mention on the video. It was too long to list them on the menu.
Hello Tony, I am planning to visit Lisbon and your videos have been very informative. Can the Zavegante Card with Zapping also be used on the Railway system (Comboios de Portugal) to Belem and Sintra?
Hello, it can be used indeed! We explain how to reach Sintra here ruclips.net/video/ao-T6ap8HvU/видео.html
Hi Tony! Thanks again for the video! Where can we usually find the tickets machine?
Always near the entrance barriers to the metro stations.
@@tonybaronfamily5082 👏👏👏
I'm really enjoying watching the videos. I wonder if you could recommend a transport app for Lisbon?
Hello there, in Lisbon we always use Google Maps. All the best.
