@@mirekslechta7161 The far-right party won *no seats* in the most recent Ukraine election (which were free and fair, unlike a Russian election!), so Ukraine as a nation is *NOT* far-right/Nazi. Russia is killing Ukrainian civilians by the thousands that, by their own election results, proved themselves to NOT be Nazis. Don't believe Putin's lies. As for the Azov regiment, I haven't seen enough video, or high enough quality, to assess the tattoos of "almost each" of the 1000+ prisoners taken from Azovstal, and if you insist otherwise then you're not being honest with us.

That is what matters to me much more than swastikas.. Admitting or even inviting Sweden, or Finland is redusing NATO current member´s security SINCE IT IS RISING PROBABILITY OF NUCLEAR WAR BETWEEN NATO AND RUSSIA...rising probability of brutal destrucion in nuclear war. USA is all behind this stupid inviting new members!!! USA is making Europe unsafe rather than safe!! WE need to get rid of USA here in Europe, not Russia!! Immigrants go wherever they want provided the host nation is willing to take them. Ukrainians qualify as refugees due to the fact that Russia is carrying out a mission of trying to erase the idea of a Ukraine from existence. They believe that people currently calling themselves Ukrainians are actually uneducated Russians who just need re-education. Neighboring countries should be where 85% of refugees end up because ultimately the goal is to stabilize the nation in question enough that 99.9999% of surviving refugees end up back home fairly quickly. It should be a global effort to assist those neighboring country in taking in and hosting the refugees. But ultimately refugees traveling further from their home country just end up costing more money in the long run when it's time for them to return home.

The 11 lectures by Alex Stubb are timely and informative to understand the immediate and wider aspects of international relationships. We know politics is always highly personal that contribute to the wider perspectives Alex discusses. It would be interesting and valuable to examine the psychology of key players. To be fair and to take etical decisions in every aspect of life would be ideal BUT in crisis situations like the war in Ukraine, we must not allow perfectionism to be an obstacle to do what must be done. Let me explain. I read many comments on social media saying things like "But Europe didn't accept so many migrants from other nationalities" or "The US did this or that". All of that is true, absolutely true, but my questions for these people are the following:
    - Since europeans accept people similar to them more easily and simply won't fully open their doors to migrants or refugees from countries of the middle east, would you be prepared to NOT give assistance to ukranians now just to "treat everyone equally"? Only to be in the moral high ground?
    - Since the US invaded or influenced other countries in the past, would you be prepared to deny economic and logistical assistance to Ukraine now to compensate for past US actions? Do you think that the death of ukranian grandmas somehow benefits the countries that the US invaded? When you see the problems caused by the US, do you really see the solution of these problems in the Kremlin's regime? Or is it just revanchist satisfaction?
The war in Ukraine present us choices between the bad and the worst. If we listened to this kind of people, we would stay still in an ethical paralisys, like frightened rabbits, too overwelmed by the imperfection of the options before us. If we listened to these people we wouldn't let ukranians flee to the EU and we would ignore Ukraine because we would "need to compensate for our sins". Then Ukraine would fall, Russia would get stronger and the war would expand. Would that be a better world? I say it's time to step aside those considerations for a time (or internally reflect on them as Alexander Stubb suggest). I say it's time to choose the less bad outcome and do it with decision.

@Tracchofyre re blaming the coming (already here?) food crisis on the war in Ukraine is perhaps a somewhat West centric viewpoint? Here is a list of the world top 10 wheat producers ...
      China - 134,254,710
      India - 107,590,000
      Russia - 85,896,326
      United States - 49,690,680
      Canada - 35,183,000
      France - 30,144,110
      Pakistan - 25,247,511
      Ukraine - 24,912,350
      Germany - 22,172,100
      Turkey - 20,500,000
... with Ukraine coming in 8th. Food shortages associated with loss of Ukrainian crops to the world market are directly due to the war. And theoretically there should be enough wheat produced by the rest of the world to at least avoid the worst of world hunger if distributed equitably. But of course, like the Covid vaccine distributions this is unlikely to happen. This will be further complicated if China, India and other nations decide to hold back the bulk of their export crops to ensure food security for their own people in the coming short term. future. Though we may disagree with this, truth is - given how we in the West have behaved, we have little right to disapprove or condemn them for this.
But hunger and starvation in Africa and the Middle East nations etc that rely on Russian grain will be more directly a result of the West's initiated sanctions against Russia. As will food shortages world wide as result of our sanctions against Russian fertlizers etc. No matter how much we in the West like to pretend that there is no distinction between the war and the sanctions, it would be naive of us to assume the majority of people in the Global South and Asia cannot understand the distinction and know it is a direct result of the West's behaviours that they suffer, and not because of Russia's invasion. Whilst we in the West talk incessantly of the number of nations that voted in favour of the UN motion condemning Russia's invasion of Ukraine (a good example of virtue signalling), we spend an almost equal amount of time ignoring the list of nations that declined to join in our nuclear option economic sanctions against Russia. Is this because this 2nd vote does not fit our occasionally sanctimonious narrative?

"like frightened rabbits, too overwelmed by the imperfection of the options before us." SWEET!!! Well said!
      -------------------------------
But you are missing the point my friend. The hypocrisy and belligerence of the West is what people have gotten tired of. Belgrade, Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Syria, Iran (General killed by tRump)... and now Russia. Do you see the pattern already? And each time, the West justifies their aggression by being the Judge, Jury and Executioner, all at the same time.
After 22 years of warning by Putin, NATO is trying to move their front to Russia's doorstep. So, people don't see this as a Ukraine war; they feel sorry for Ukraine. (more on that later). Most people believe that Russia has the right to protect its borders from the same aggression that befell the other countries I listed. It's like the school bully that finally meets its match. All the school kids want him to get a bloody nose, as a checkmate on its aggression.
That's why the Pope said that "NATO started this war," like it started the other ones; except this time it has met its match, and the school kids are praying for the bully to be taught a lesson --- hoping that it may stop!
As for Ukraine, it needs a leader, not a comedian. This is serious business. A good leader will stay as a buffer and not try to be the NATO frontline. A good leader will let Russia and NATO fight their war, while he seeks the interest of his people. But to fight NATO's war, is to be destroyed by Russia, no matter how many standing ovations he gets.
Angela Markel: "How many weapons can we give Ukraine so that Russia losses the war?" Circa 2015.
PS: If Putin attacked Ukraine just because he wants to keep Ukraine in the Russian sphere, as you seem to have been made to believe, the whole world will be against him. But NATO's aggression is the ex-factor, and that's why majority of the world support Russia.

South Africa as you mentioned was one of the countries which choose to abstain. As a South African I am deeply shocked and ashamed by my states wrong-minded decision. The South African envoy to the UN in fact first spoke out against Russia's invasion of Ukraine, but that stance quickly did a 180 degree turn. The reason given by the SA UN envoy, was that there was not enough opportunity given for negotiations or dialogue with Russia. This excuse was simply nonsense, as many high level western alliance representatives, including heads of state, engaged Putin face to face and via other lines of communication; and continue to engage. Putin and his regime had outright lied about its intentions to why it had assembled in excess of 100000 troops along the Ukrainian border. It is no secret that ANC lead South African government, has strong historical political links with the ex-Soviet Union and with Putin's regime. More importantly there are complex business relationships between a Russian oligarch and so-called SA state owned enterprise (SOE), one of which is Chancellor House, which is owned directly by the ANC Party and which has direct interests in the mining and other sectors in SA - of which one such manganese mine is part owned by a Russian oligarch who has links to Putin. The ANC Party benefits handsomely through these commercial associations. So I question the motives which drove South Africa's decision to change it's stance on the war in Ukraine. South Africa was once hailed as a shining democrarcy, with a world class Constitution bedded on upholding law, order, human rights as enshrined within the UN Charter to which South Africa is a co-signatory. For South Africa to stand aside, whilst human rights atrocities are being inflicted on a peaceful nation thus forcefully overiding Ukraines right to its sovereignty, is an unspeakable injustice. I am deeply ashamed by my governments decisions taken recently in the UN Assembly concerning questions of Russian invasion of Ukraine and its seat in the UN Human Rights Council.

This article explains it very well: ""How Putin’s Russia embraced fascism while preaching anti-fascism" Atlantic Council article of April 17. When Vladimir Putin first came to power at the turn of the millennium, one of the main challenges he faced was the need to repair battered Russian national pride following a decade of post-Soviet turbulence marked by economic collapse and endless revelations of Soviet-era crimes against humanity.
Putin’s solution was disarmingly simple but brilliantly effective. He set out to revive Russian patriotism by building a modern national identity around the Soviet Union’s role in the defeat of Nazi Germany. While WWII had always played a prominent role in shaping the national psyche, under Putin it would ascend to new heights as the defining moment in Russian history.
Far from being ashamed of their Soviet past, Russians were now told that they could be proud of belonging to a “victor nation.” Instead of dwelling on the millions of innocent victims murdered during the Stalin era, they should honor the righteous heroics of the Soviet war effort.
This veneration of the Soviet WWII experience proved hugely popular with the Russian public. Over the past two decades, it has evolved into a quasi-religious cult complete with its own lexicon, rituals, monuments, and holy days. In 2020, it even received its very own cathedral.

It is a misconception that the war is about the West at all. It is about Ukraine.
It is a fact that ALL Eastern European countries, from Estonia to Bulgaria don't want to belong to the Russki Mir anymore. It is also a fact, that they never wanted to be in the Russian sphere of influence in the first place. In none of these countries communism came to power from inside, only by the force of the Soviet army. And as soon as the Soviet army left, the ran away from Russia as fast as possible and into the arms of NATO. The Baltic states never wanted to be part of the Soviet Union, they were handed over to the communists by Hitler in the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact of 1939. Also Western Ukraine and Western Belarus as well as the Republic of Moldova only came to the Soviet Union through this deal.
Boris Yeltsin liquidated the Soviet Union by seceding the Russian SSR from the Union. Remember that. The core of the Soviet Union seceded first, only afterwards Ukraine followed. It is like England would secede from the United Kingdom before Scotland does and than regrets it 20 years later and attacks Scotland.

And this was partly because RSS and it's people had close ties with the West and were funded and trained by Americans in times when relations with USSR was at heights. They have a bias, it is as simple as that, they like government in Kiev are dividing people with their far right policies which is making it harder for them to control nation and to counter that they are introducing more and more anti people policies. Well one difference is that It took 8 years for a combined total deaths (Ukrainian and Russian) of 14,000 in the donbas, and in Serbia it took only 1 year for 13,500 deaths.
We can compare and contrast those numbers with the amount of people killed in Russia's invasion, Conservative estimates puts Russian troop deaths at 10,000 with around the same number of dead Ukrainian armed forces. So far we have over 1500 confirmed civilian deaths (over 200 children), so a minimum of 21,500 deaths in less than 3 months.
One of Putins excuses for the invasion is the genocide of Russian speaking people in the donbas - we can use the same logic to now say that Russia should be invaded to stop the genocide of Ukrainians.
Basically its all quite complex, however what we do know is that the World cannot allow a European nation to expand its borders through the use of military force. We can argue about whose fault it is until we're all blue in the face, the fact remains that Russia must fail, and must be seen to fail

Thank you very much for another very educative video. We have learned, that the european values cannot be enforced upon other parts of the world.
We europeans should be aware of the fact, that this war is extremely contradictious to our own values, but not so much or even not at all to the values of China, India etc..
But we should equally aware of the fact, that we have to maintain and defend our values. We are not the center of the world, but we have to defend our position in it. We have the right to welcome the war refugees of Ukraine, because they are similar to ourselves and are expelled of their country for exactly this reason, and we have the right to refuse immigration of people, who do not share our values.
Europe should leave the place as center of the world, but defend itself and repell all the forces which want to destroy our values, by islamism, nationalism and other ideologies.
In history, Europe has experienced all the antihuman powers like religion, nationalism, superstition etc., which are actually the plague of big parts of Africa and Asia.

Great comment - I agree. Part of the world blames Europe for helping the Ukrainians while thousands of refugees from the Middle East wait in vain at the border. And part of Europeans can't grapple with this and justify this position for themselves.
Europe must regain its instinct for self-preservation. It must gain enough self-confidence to make it clear that trying to help the Ukrainians is more important to us than helping - say - the Syrians. Simply, the Ukrainians are our relatives (I am from the Czech Republic - we Czechs literally have relatives there).
Similarly, no one in Europe has the right to accuse (for example) the Iraqis of being more concerned about the situation in Syria than about the situation in Ukraine.
But Europe is on its own. We like strong moralistic gestures, but we often don't behave that way in practice. This creates a contradiction between rhetoric and reality. Let us hope that the roll in Ukraine will bring our feet back down to earth.
Otherwise, of course, we need to help beyond Europe's borders. Let us not pretend that it is in our power to save the whole world at the expense of ourselves. At the end of the day, Europe is responsible for the well-being of Europeans. And that is nothing to be ashamed of. On the contrary, it is a necessary condition for survival.

Exam your own view on the conflict !
You told all points of view but the ones that support Russia !
And yes brushing of the countries that supported russia in UN as and i quote "Rogue states" is already euro , West centric approach !
Would be nice to give example of Serbia

Thanks for your sober and well-informed analysis Prime Minister. I consider the Russian system to be illegitimate as it is regression to an Archaic Age. I recently finished writing a paper for my grad program titled: "Ukraine 2022: A Chance to Re-Evaluate the Axial Age Thesis." - Toivottaen

It is all about OIL, GAS.
RUSSIA is a OIL & GAS company masquerading as a country and like Iran spending it's profits on Armaments by which to conquer it's potential competitors.

You said that India is the biggest exporter from Russia. Did you perhaps mean importer?

He did say Russian arms exporter when importer was indeed the right word.

Regardless, if the west "learns its lesson", another importan lesson is that the west has always strived to "learn its lesson", internalize conflicts and tried to be the "bigger man", but the hate doesn't stop, does it. the "rest" allways spitefull against the west regardless. And the rest certainly don't care about us "learning" our lesson. For them, it is al just a powergame. I think that is important to consider before the west tries to "learn" its lesson this time.

yes, india for example, their stand on ukraine is purely opportonistic. it is about money. and when you dare criticise them, it is the fault of the english, or the americans tried to invade. it is almost as if it has nothing to do with india.

Interesting points raised here by all and I totally agree... but like the speaker said, atimes it is wise to step back and like to their concerns-that I agree with as well. It does not necessarily mean that the West, always, will accept /consider all their concerns but a pointer towards the learning process... 'cause at the end of day, the vast majority of us would prefer a peaceful and prosperous global community.

Dude - international relations are determined by national self-interests to most degree. Whatever "opinions" those countries in "the rest" have, they are nothing but an expression of that self-interest - or an expression of their "struggle for power". Thus taking these "opinions" as somehow sincere "true" representations of the West "out there" would be a mistake... IMHO anyways... :D

Yes, and so are our relations determined by national self-interest. But it is very uncommon for US media to come out and say that.

One point you've overlooked is that western powers in relation to Africa are capable of armtwisting African Nations into voting against Russia but deep down most Africans though we empathise with the Ukrainians we are more inclined towards Russia reason.
    1. pre-colonial Africa was socialist in nature and the system of governance in Cuba 🇨🇺 and to some extention the USSR reasonates with African ism.
2 . Fact Russia (USSR)did not participate in the scramble and partition of Africa when the west was colonising Africa.
    3. The USSR actively participated in the Liberation of Africa from Colonialism the last Country to gain its independence, in 1994 South Africa the US& Britain (the capitan of the west ) supported the Apartheid South Africa while the USSR supported Africa.
    4. The Liberal west is viewed as ignorant for instance through pushing the LGBQTi + , GMO etc that is totally in conflict with African values and culture . Russia stand on this resonates with Africa.
    5. The west still Colonizes Africa through their exchange rate Currency and deep down African countries would like to come to an End . RUSSIA is seen as the only Country that can tilt the balance.
