    This probably sounds crazy, but your review and coverage of the Joolka water system video is probably what finally convinced me that having a second kid would be great for the family. Well now here I am a year or so later with my second son having been born just 6 weeks ago…
    It’s funny how a simple water system review with some nice video of the family to showcase it can LITERALLY lead to new life (and new adventure) being brought into this world. I guess what I’m trying to say is: Thanks.

      Wow! This may be the BEST comment we have ever received. If we could gift anything to anyone it would be the inspiration to expand a family. And wait until your kids hit this age. East and Rye, ages 5 and 2.5 are now becoming best friends. It is so amazing to just watch from a distance as they play and discover their surroundings. Chasing bugs, holding snakes, making bamboo fishing poles. It is so fun to watch! It actually allows me to be a kid again. That is something I wasn't really expecting. I am able to slow down and see the world through kids eyes . Wow, was I missing out! Thanks for this really kind comment. Often I find the family videos tend to get lower views. But I continue to include them because for one they are my favorite, but more than that I want to share with families the joy I am experiencing with my boys. I don't know if you have ever heard this. We share this from time to time. We actually started this channel for two reasons. One because we stumbled across teardrops and wanted to tell the world what teardrops did for our family. But, number two, we wanted to show families that you don't have to put life on hold until the kids get older. We have so many friends that say "We will do this or that when the boys get out of diapers." Well, I know for a fact you can do those things anytime because we are doing it. Yes, it can be a struggle at times. But you adapt quickly and if anything find the experience is better than before the kids were born.

      @@PlayingwithSticks Camping is definitely something you can do with the kids from a very young age. Apparently I was 2 weeks old when I went on my first camping trip, I'm now 61 and still love it. I took our girls camping every chance I could and now the grandchildren get to enjoy camping too, two of them were only 10 days and 2 weeks old on their first camping trips. Then as they get to be toddlers they can help set up camp...even a two year old can hand out the tent pegs for us to hammer in. Camping is definitely a great thing to do.

      @@jennyleef1775 I love hearing this. We have a home video where my mother takes me out to the lake camping the day she got out of the hospital. She was actually there the day before she went in to teh hospital as well. Crazy! She says looking back on it now she had no idea what she was doing. She didn't even know where to put me in a vehicle to keep me safe. So she brought a laundry basket, put it on the floor and placed me in there. Haha! Wow, times have sure changed. But I am pretty sure all that she did for me in my early years has some strong correlation to my love of the outdoors today.

      Here we are two months later. Still in the early days for sure, but my wife and I both feel like outdoors is where we want to be. I might even have her convinced to get a teardrop camper! Thanks for the excellent response. It’s really encouraging. Now we’re just waiting for the fall and heading out for some well needed adventure. Albeit, with car seats instead of a laundry basket. 😉

    These are all great ideas. I have a Casita 17 and spend a lot of time in COE and state parks (eastern half of the country) but my tanks are not all that huge, so.... I often wet a washcloth with hot water and wipe down my whole body (yes even my hair) and get surprisingly clean. I can then shower on alternate days and extend my camping time. It always amazes me how easy it is to make yourself feel 100% better with very little water. Our ancestors that didn't have endless running water (or any at all) found ways to stay clean without massive effort. Camp on!

    Rubbing alcohol and a face towel does ok for a day or so but I wouldn't over do using it. I used it on a camping trip up in the Sierra mountains years ago.
    A Marine friend of mine showed me some of the gear he was carrying when he was deployed to the middle east in late 2001. One of his duffel bags was 1/3 full of baby wipes. He had previously been in Somalia and knew something about cleaning up without showers or baths.

    Great subject Drew. How to keep clean, or at the very least feel clean. When we go camping in our teardrop,we always have wipes in our changing tent. So if the day goes by too fast, we always have a private place to wipe down. Maybe we’ll look into a portable shower. But for now the wipes and occasional campground showers are just fine. Thanks again for sharing your ideas.

    • @PlayingwithSticks
      @PlayingwithSticks  2 года назад +2

      Thank you David! You said it perfectly, "feel clean." For May and I it often is perception over reality. We weren't wipe people a few years ago. But now it is an essential part of our gear list. We have been talking about our cleaning plans for this summer. Our goal is to try and replace our camp showers with the old fashion sponge bath. We will let you know how it goes after 3 months. I have a feeling that combined with the occasional wipe will be a pretty good combination. The Geyser shower was a real blessing last year. So this is why I have a feeling the sponge bath will be just what we need.

      I love that idea! I also like to add this little tip I learned on here. You can take a piece of tape and run it the length of the sprayer before you spray paint it black. This way you have a sight line for your water. Yes, you can just pick it up. But it kind of sounds fun to customize it a bit.

    We have always done the sponge bath method unless we've been near a nice creek or river. Nothing like feeling nice and clean before bed. I have tried wipes etc. but the ones I used left that sticky feeling so I never felt clean, plus I hate the thought of all that going into landfill as it's just thrown out after one use.

      @PlayingwithSticks  2 года назад +1

      Glad you enjoyed this one. We realize staying clean isn't the most clicked on topic. But, May and I believe it a very helpful way to enhance the camping experience. So really glad to hear you felt it was relevant. We had planned on making that video last summer. To be honest we disliked the rooftop tent experience so much we didn't even want to continue experimenting with it. I knew I couldn't make an honest/well reviewed video with only trying the setup two times. But in my opinion the rooftop tent falls quite short of the teardrop experience. I think they are great for growing kids. A nice little fort for them and some space for the parents. But if it was up to me I would choose an instant pop-up tent on the ground over a rooftop tent any day. I have always been a fan of tent camping. But these instant pop-up tents like the Gazelle and Clam have really been speaking to me lately. I have spent a ton of time in them and can highly recommend them to folks.

      I didn't think there would be as big of interest in this wipe as there has been. I wish I would have left this part in the video. I cut it due to time. The wipes are my favorite due to quality vs cost. However, the only issue that some people may have with them is that they have a very slight smell. To me it is a smell that I am totally fine with. And what that smell is, is the same smell as a sanitary wet wipe. That little wet napkin you get on a plane or with your ribs. But at that price and size that is a no issue for me.

    All great ideas! growing up when we did camps longer than 2 or 3 nights we would usually just find a KOA with showers or get a motel for one night to shower. My wife found on Pinterest a DIY solar shower for our camping trips, we used a hand pump weed sprayer painted black, leave it out in the sun for an hour or two in the summer and you have nice warm water for a shower without having to pay for a motel o KOA. Great suggestions. We actually like using the Huggies Natural wet wipes and don't feel like they leave us sticky. Maybe it's because we're used to a certain level of stickiness since it's so humid in Michigan?!? Not sure but they make a huge difference at the end of a camping day. Feels amazing to clean off the sweat and makes it so that we don't have to visit the campground showers quite as often.
    I also liked your sock suggestion. Feet definitely stay cleaner with socks on - although we still get lots of sand that comes through our shoes and socks so it's still nice to clean our feet off with those wipes. My method works great for anyone including backpackers. Super light and costs about $.10 Just take a BLACK trash bag, fill it up with water and leave it in the sun for a while. Now you have all the hot water you could possibly want to shower with, you can put a lot of water in one of those large bags. So I use my metal cup that comes with any backpacking pan kit to take the water out of the bag and just dump it over myself. And the only extra weight a backpacker has to take is the weight of one trash bag, basically nothing. I use this in the deserts that have water, like Escalante. So you will need a source of water and it needs sunlight to warm it up. It won't work in a cold winter, but I would not be backpacking at that time anyway, lol.

    OK. Those Kroger wipes was my new take away. Thanks!
    In the past I have used in order of frequency: baby-wipes (yup, don't like the sticky) + waterless soaps, and sponge bath (the most satisfying, but needs more privacy).
    I purchased a tankless water heater system, but haven't been camping to use it. Although it has the potential for great satisfaction, since I am a traveling camper vs stay put camper, goofing around with setup every day and water requirements in the southwest I think will end up limiting its usage.

    • @PlayingwithSticks
      @PlayingwithSticks  2 года назад +2

      What was your take on the waterless soaps. I haven't used them since I was a kid. Well, I haven't used them without water. I remember just feeling like I was walking around with soap on all day. Maybe I didn't rub them enough, but like the baby wipes I often felt sticky when done. After chatting with you last summer we moved over to the sponge bath. Our goal this summer is to utilize that method most often. After really appreciating the Geyser shower, minus the issues. I am pretty sold on a simple sponge bath for the family. Followed by an occasional solar shower from time to time. A permanent mount for the tankless water heater would eliminate a lot of the hassle. We realized this quickly with the Joolca. But, like you mentioned you still have to do with the overuse of water. To us it is such a precious resource when camping that we tend to lean towards methods that use less water.

      @@PlayingwithSticks Waterless soaps have some benefits. Some of the waterless soaps can be used with or without water, so unlike other regular soaps, if I leave some on, no big deal. I get the best full-clean results with a sponge rinse after, so basically I am using the waterless soap and finish with a sponge bath.
      Lots of differences in waterless soaps. Fragrances were the most annoying. Just started using them when I stopped camping. I need to start my testing over.
      Waterless soaps have some potential, but I use a pretty mild non-soap soap to begin with, so waterless types will need to beat that for continuous use, but they may have more emergency uses - maybe to get the baby wipe sticky off.

      Great point Miriam. Thank you for sharing this. We are pack it in pack it out folks. But, it is always good to be reminded that there are more sustainable methods. Empty bottle, take the lid with holes burned into it off and put it on the next bottle. Rinse and repeat. Pressure is controlled by how hard you squeeze the bottle. Down side: requires 1 hand to operate, and maybe a funnel for warmed water. Reusable, recycled, cheap or free, light weight, disposable. Sometimes you can find them with free soda inside!!

    Socks, this is one of the most important things for the wild, they protect your feet from rubbing against shoes, remove moisture and help with keeping you warm in the winter as well. You should always carry at least 1 back up pair of socks with you when hiking. If your feet get wet, you can change them quickly and limit the risk of frost bite in the winter, or fungal infections during the summer.
    Drew.... you forgot baths again. Why do you keep forgetting bathtubs? There are a TON of light weight portable baths, some are inflatable, some are fabric, some are hybrid. The portable bath. During ww1 the army (for the officers mainly) used large portable metal bathtubs that they could move to a location and set up, then fill with boiled hot water. During ww2 this shifted to the portable field bath. A canvas bat tub in a wooden frame. the frame sets up quick then the canvas tub is filled with hot water. Today versions of this can be found using PVC style piping, aluminum frames, or other things to keep the weight down, they fold up like a cot not taking up a lot of space. When you combine this with a hot water on demand system, or even... A camp stove with water heater you can take nice relaxing hot baths. (remember, add the cold water first then add the hot slowly to bring the temp up so you don't burn yourself.)

    Water Wipes, that is their name. Walmart up here in Canada. 99.9% water, .1% fruit essence. They work.
    Hot shower, a Helio bag shower from Nemo equipment or, again Walmart sells knock offs. Or Amazon, search pressure shower for camping. Bag stays on the ground, you pressurize it via a foot pump and spray away. First person gets a pretty warm to hot shower, second person gets a warm shower...we rotate. Please spend some money on biodegradable soaps or just use pond or stream grit like I do. Big bag of the cheapest underwear available, change often, rinse out and dry or hold til you stumble across a laundromat.

      I haven't run across this brand yet. Thank you! There are Helio knockoffs now? Love it. I am a big fan of anything that produces pressure but doesn't require batteries. Yes, biodegradable soaps. And they really don't cost much. No different than just a regular bar of soap. We bounce between camp suds and Dr. Bronner's. I went on a trip to Burkina Faso West Africa a few years ago. I went with a friend who goes quite often. He swears by these high dollar wicking type underwear from REI. I couldn't afford the ones he bought, so I purchased the REI branded version. Incredible! Compared to regular underwear that is one day use for me. I could go day's on end with this one. And the best part was you could quickly wash it by hand daily and it would dry out in no time. I am sold on the concept now!

My video editing software was putting in some sort of fade on my vocals. I should’ve cleaned it up, but I didn’t notice it until right before posting.
