Hi, everyone! Director here. I know this video is a couple years old now, but I still get comments asking about the full show so I thought I would address that in a pinned comment. So there's only one recording of the ENTIRE show that I have, and it's from an invited dress rehearsal night. Unfortunately (and through no fault of the incredible cast, crew, and creative team) there are some technical difficulties in the last 15-20 minutes that are fairly disruptive, and I don't believe reflect the finished product. We tried multiple times to re-film the show, and I swear those last 15-20 minutes were cursed because something would always happen right around "Meant to Be Yours", and the file would get corrupted or the camera would die or something wild like that. This show was a labor of love of 50+ unpaid volunteer students who treated it like a full-time job (and then some) for six months, and I would just really hate for it to be judged on the merits of what was ultimately an unfinished version. My mind is open to the idea of publishing it anyway, and the incredibly kind comments on this video and the others make me believe most people would be understanding, but I would just really hate for the actors, orchestra, or crew to get hate for something that wasn't anyone's fault.
You should post it anyways. Mostly because, regardless of technical difficulties with the recording, most people would just be interested to see this performance in any length longer than the three songs you uploaded. It's an extremely well performed version of the show, and for some has become an iconic favorite. Especially now, I feel like this would help take people back to a less hectic and anxious time. This performance of Heathers is one of my favorites from the limited show of what I've seen, and I've always wished I could see more even if it's incomplete. And I'm sure many would agree with that sentiment.
Hi! Thank you for uploading this! I was wondering if you have the full performance? I would LOVE to see this amazing cast perform the whole thing! Thank you again!
I know must of this is years old, and so are the comments. And after seeing the pinned comment the urge to scream my lungs out and say idc how crappy or bad the video or the acting is or whatever kind of mistake or anhthing id do anything for the full version to come out. But i cant do that, and now i wrote it down just so you know my thoughts (sorry for bad grammar am not english and also have an another laungage autocorrector + i was typing fast. Anyways LUV YOU❤❤
This might be a little mean, but I'm gonna come out and say it: the only reason this show got any attention is because they made JD a girl and the main romance a lesbian one. And before anyone accuses me of homophobia, I'm going to slam down my metaphorical gay card because I *am* a lesbian. But I'm not so blinded by my desire to see lesbian romance that I'm going to ignore the flaws in something just because it has that lesbian romance. Just from the promotional photos and this video, I'm not very impressed with this production. The set is very bland, but I won't criticize that too much as that's a major flaw in the original production. However, I can criticize other choices. For example, the poor costuming. Some of the costumes are appropriate for the 1980s, but the Heathers and Veronica suffer majorly in particular. Their coats are way too big on them, when they should be much shorter and fitted as we see in the film and original production, or at least make the skirts longer to make the oversized baggy blazers less noticeable. Heather McNamara looks like a hot mess, with messy makeup, hair that looks more unkempt than teased, and the baggiest blazer of the three (not to mention an anachronistic nose ring if the promo pictures are to be trusted). She doesn't look like an it girl of the 80s, she looks like a hobo. Other gripes are the bizarre choice to include the teachers in the choreography. I get it was a different time so school dynamics might be different, but it's incredibly odd to show teacher characters doing silly choreography while holding lunch trays and yelling "Freak! Slut! Lard-ass!" as well as calling a student a "babe." Replace them with extra ensemble members if you really need a certain number of people that badly - but the stage looks kind of crowded so you could have just had a smaller group of ensemble members in this number and it would be fine. Kurt and Ram's actors don't seem untalented, but they're not the right choice for these roles. Kurt and Ram are belligerent macho jocks, but the mannerisms of these actors come off as a lot more effeminate, in this number at least. The costuming once again doesn't help - a couple of letterman jackets would've helped them seem a lot more macho. The choreography starts to break down in the end, coming off as a lot more chaotic with people seeming to scramble for their spots and a lot of people being off-tempo with one another. And at the end when Veronica is sort of crowd surfing (an admittedly cool moment), the remaining ensemble members who aren't carrying her should've been blocked better, as there's only two people stage left and like, five or so stage right, so it looks unbalanced. I'm sure the actors are talented and all, but this number leaves a lot to be desired, and I've seen plenty of other amateur productions that blow this out of the water. Not to mention that the director seems to have a huge superiority complex about making the choice to cast a woman in the role of JD, insulting men who have played JD in the past by saying they only got the role because of their vocal range. Which is funny because it wasn't even her idea in the first place to do that - it was actress Teddy Lake who suggested it. You shouldn't have to tear other artists down to promote your own artistic creations. You can acknowledge that Teddy Lake brings something unique and fresh to the role of JD without insulting actors who have played the character before. So yeah, the director's holier-than-thou statements about the production and the fact that it feels like I'm being marketed to in a kind of condescending way ("look! It's a wlw couple! Go, lesbian, fetch! Give us your money!") means I don't feel bad about being critical about this number.
Unpopular opinion, but I'm not the biggest fan of this production (at least in this number). The ensemble cast is doing fine, but I question the idea to have a quarter of the ensemble here being teachers. The teachers aren't the ones feeling suffocated by the pressures of the teenage high school hierarchy, so it comes across as really insincere. It's also really creepy to see characters who are supposed to be adults calling a 17-year-old girl a "babe." Also a nitpick, but Heather McNamara's costume is very ill-fitting - it practically swallows her, making her look like she's wearing hand-me-downs that don't fit her properly. Not a good look for a character who is supposed to be rich, popular, and concerned with her appearance. Veronica isn't very good either. She's got a decent set of pipes and all, but she doesn't really bring that comedic edge here that I've seen in so many Veronicas before. The sassiness and sarcasm is gone, and the actress is reading all of her lines like she's bored. I don't believe her for a second. A bit ironic, Ms. Mathis, considering your statement that “I think anyone who sees the production will agree that (JD’s actress, Teddy Lake) is so much more convincing as the charming and dangerous iconic character than the scores of men before her who only got the part because they could hit those high notes.” It's kind of in poor taste to insult the productions that came before yours and helped establish JD as a character. Do you have a problem with Christian Slater's performance too - the one whose portrayal became the basis for every portrayal of JD since?
@Jamir Gordon When did I ever indicate that I think this is the original production? I made it obvious that I know this isn't the original production, comparing this Veronica to other Veronicas (including the original off-broadway actress that was on the soundtrack, Barrett Weed), and mentioning the director insulting the actors playing JD in the productions that came before hers. I know what the Heathers musical is - I've seen it, I've listened to the soundtrack, I even have considered singing Lifeboat for an audition (and I'd love to play Heather McNamara). Also, it's in the script for the ENSEMBLE to say "and a babe," but it's not required that the teachers have to be included in the ensemble here, just because the original production did it. The original production of Heathers wasn't perfect, and the inclusion of Coach Ripper, Principal Gowan, and Ms. Fleming in the ensemble is a major flaw of it. This production was CLEARLY not afraid of changing things up, since Martha is not even close to overweight (which means the bullying on the basis of her weight falls a little flat) and they changed JD's role to that of a female. Why couldn't they also take the teachers out of the ensemble? I've seen people do that and it greatly improved this number - Acting Against Cancer and The Eagle Theatre both did this and their productions of Beautiful can be found on RUclips. It's like people who cast a Heather Duke with a small chest and change the line "her mom paid for implants" to "her mom paid for a nose job." It's a positive change.
Hayden Taylor Hi! As the description says, this is rehearsal footage. The show was sold out every performance, to the point where we had to sell standing room tickets. You have a right to voice your dislike for the show, but it’s not a bad idea to read the description before you do.
