- The real hero of the Star Wars galaxy in 1/12 scale. Painted and weathered to resemble the dirt and grime from the original trilogy. I'm not an expert, and this isn't a tutorial, so some steps may have been cut for time. Refer to your own instructions!
I use a brand called Golden Fluid Acrylics. For this model I used a combination of Cabon Black, Iridescent Silver (Fine), Titanium White, and Burnt Sienna/Yellow Ochre for weathering. There may have been some Chromium Oxide Green added to the mix as well, which is useful if you're going for a swampy look .You may benefit from some Vallejo Model Wash in Grey, although watering down some Carbon Black acrylic paint seems to work just as well for getting into the crevices. I'm definitely not going for perfection here. I highly recommend using whatever brand you can find and mixing and matching whatever colours you don't have. For weathering you can use a combination of different earth tones (browns, greens and yellows) to reach the desired level of dirt and grime.
A big thank you to Chris Zabriskie for sharing his music:

Beautiful. Have watched this before and just did again, love the music, the attention to detail, and it's my favorite little Astromech in the universe! It's like Star Wars ASMR!!! Fantastic work!!!!
I'm so pleased to hear this. It's exactly what I was going for and it's really nice to know that the work is being appreciated. I still have a Boba Fett, Scout Trooper, and X-Wing to build, so I'll be doing similar videos for those too. Thanks for watching.
Very comforting, a different environment from other modeling videos
The sounds where so relaxing
I'm glad you think so. I think they're a big part of these videos, and I always have to think hard about cutting certain shots for pacing.
Sounds like hard work! I actually had a go at making a custom boba fett and that was hard 🤣
Hey can u do Star Wars the black reviews and how to custom paint figures
Great tutorial video, will make putting together my model much easier, Thanks again and you model looks great!
Hot damn, fantastic job! Wish I had the patience to do this. Very zen movie to watch :)
Thanks! Pleased you enjoyed it.
The only thing I don't like about this model is the join line in the dome. Not your fault, but talking about the model design. Nice work.
Hi, I know what you mean. I didn't know this at the time, but you can use a filler to bridge the gap and smooth the joins for a more accurate result. Thanks.
@@TimeSpentWhere Something I must do on mine as it bugs me!
Nice job but it would have been a good idea to glue the dome parts so that the join line could have been sanded smooth and disappear, as on the original.
I agree. I wasn't aware of this technique at the time. 👍
Amazing job on the weathering.
Thankyou very much. Star Wars models are very forgiving when it comes to weathering so it was fun to experiment.
great video! However, I do see minor brush strokes visible on the R2D2 head, that's the problem with acrylics. To avoid that, do you think a primer would help before we start painting? Or will a gloss coat fix the brushed texture? Also, it looks like all the pieces are a snug fit and priming + acrylics might make the pieces a bit of a pain to snap properly with ease.
Hi, thanks very much. I'm still new to model kits and painting. Yes, you're right. Some primer on the dome and thin layers of acrylic paint should be enough to prevent visible brush strokes. I was a little heavy handed on this one, but I like the result. Providing you do thin layers of primer you shouldn't have to worry too much about misaligned edges. There were a few parts that were tricky to snap together, but I'm wondering if that was due to user error more so than the kit. As for using a gloss coat to hide brush strokes I'm really not sure, it's not something I've used much before. Btw, if you build one of these yourself I hope you have fun, they're great little kits.
Thank you for the tip. They're super expensive in India and so are the Tamiya/Testor acrylic paints unfortunately, but I managed to order this kit as well as the C3PO kit via a friend travelling from the States. I just hope I don't screw up this wonderful kit, I have used poster, watercolor, acrylic paint before, but only on paper, plastic has its own challenges I guess. Never painted on models before, I should have ordered a cheaper test model. Oh well, I'll test out the primer and paint on the residual plastic frame.
Would also recommend filling gaps and seams before painting
Hey, do you have a list of paints you recommend for this?
Hi, sorry for the late reply. I use a brand called Golden Fluid Acrylics. For this model I used a combination of Cabon Black, Iridescent Silver (Fine), Titanium White, and Burnt Sienna/Yellow Ochre for weathering. There may have been some Chromium Oxide Green added to the mix as well. You may benefit from some Vallejo Model Wash in Grey, although watering down some Carbon Black acrylic paint sems to work just as well for getting into the crevices. Bear in mind that I'm not an expert and I'm definitely not going for perfection here. I highly recommend using what you can find and mixing and matching what you don't have. For weathering you can do whatever you want to reach the desired level of grime. Thanks for your comment, I'll add these details to the description.
Haha. For what. Cobalt blue on r2d2. How much jackys?
Very nice.
What paint did you use for the weathering look at the end? What did you use to dilute it? Thanks for the great vid. I’m building mine next week and using your vid as a reference. Liked video.
Hi, thankyou! I'm still a beginner at model making and painting and I'm learning as I go. For the weathering on this model I primarily used a combination of Carbon Black, Burnt Umber, Yellow Ochre, and a dark mossy Green from the GOLDEN acrylics range to recreate a grungy Dagobah style look. Everything is thinned slightly using water, especially the darkest washes. Dry brushing browns and yellows work really well for recreating a sandy Tatooine look, and the grimy green washes help for a swampy Dagobah look. Remember that in this video I don't cover every single step and I've edited down a lot of the process, so take your time with your instructions. Good luck!
Fantastic work all the way from Australia
Hi Just found this vid! What paint did you use for the Weathering? and Did you mix with just water?
Wow excellent! Do you remember if this R2-D2 / BB-8 combo kit came with any of R2's droid accessories or that only other kits like his "rocket booster" version ?
Hi, sorry for the late reply I didn't see your message. This particular kit didn't have any accessories. The only one I can find with accessories is the 1/12 Rocket Booster model.
@@TimeSpentWhere Dang.. that's unfortunate. I want to do a Bandai R2-D2 with some accessories deployed. That rocket booster version on the secondary market is just too outrageously priced. I've found a "Hologram Edition" with accessories, minus the rocket packs. Those are transparent blue though & fairly boring. Not sure how well the accessories would "pop" in detail. Happy modeling to you !
This is a kit I'm really interested in buying and building, but I can't figure out for the life of me how to cover up that ugly seam line on the silver dome. None of the techniques I know will work with all the blue parts that have to go underneath. You can't fill in/melt together the seam line and paint silver over it while the blue pieces are there, nor can you do it and then put the blue pieces in afterwards. Masking would be extremely difficult to do and there would still be small imperfections, and I'm not sure if its possible to cut the blue pieces into individual parts and stick them in after the two halves of the dome are fused together.
Hey Stephen,
It can be done fairly easily.
Do a RUclips search for sprue glue.
This is easiest way to attach the dome with no gap. It sands far easier than putty.
There is only one blue part that needs modified (a tab must be cut off).
That sounds like a recipe for disaster, but removing the tab allows the blue part to be inserted after the dome is completed and sanded, and it all is very structurally sound when finished.
I know this is very broad, but if you haven't completed your R2 I'd be happy to share full details including the blue part that needs trimming (I am not home and can't remember part number, but I'd be happy to look it up).
If you need info just reply to this (so I will get notification).
@@jimrogers2089 I haven't bought the kit yet because of my aforementioned concern. Thank you very much for informing me that the blue parts can be inserted after the two silver parts are glued together, sanded, and painted. That is the one key piece of information I needed to know and could not find anywhere on the internet. Now that I know it can be done, I can probably figure out how to do it on my own if/when I get the kit, but if I have a question I will come back and find this thread again.
@@stephencrawley2862 , no problem buddy. By the way, if you decide to purchase the kit A18 is the only part that needs trimmed.
You will need tweezers to insert a couple, but they will go in. And this kit is excellent in quality and a lot of fun.
If you purchase and have any questions just hit me.
I picked up the R2-D2 jet version. Great detail, but the size is disappointing. I wish they made a model of R2 that's the scale of the old MPC kit but accurate and has all the accessories. I know there's the Sideshow figure, but it's out of my budget and I want one I can build, anyway.
The Bandai kits are made to scale with the Hasbro Black Series line.
I’m curious, I don’t have a lot of experience painting. After applying the black wash, do you wipe it off or just let it dry on there?
Hi. Yes, once applied, the surface of the black wash is wiped down until it only remains in the crevices and cracks. This helps illustrate shadow, depth, contrast, and dirt.
Although, if you want to illustrate that something has been submerged in mud or water, you can also let it dry naturally to show stains. I've used both methods in this video to make him extra dirty.
Hello✨It's cool! wonderful✨🛎&👍
Thank you! You have an excellent channel.
Hello✨ Great work 👍
Do you do paid commissions? Like if I sent you an R2 to weather to emulate a certain scene could you do it?
Hi Jordan. I can't do commissions at the moment but I love the idea. I'll let you know if that changes in the future. In the meantime I hope you can find some useful tips in these videos.
Yea!! A kids toy that you get to put together yourself! I bought one of these with the BB-8 but as soon as I opened it and saw just how small it really is I hated it and took it back to the store. I just couldn't bring myself to build it as is was so tiny!
What was that used at the end to remove the paint?
Hi, it's just a cotton bud (cue tip if you're outside of the UK) dipped in some Isopropyl Alcohol. Mine is around a 70% alcohol concentration. I let the paint drip into the cracks before attempting to remove it from the surface to create a deeper grimey look. You can also use dry paper towels to push thicker paint around a bit or to soak up liquid washes.
Does his head rotate?
Whats the color you use for R2D2 head?
I'm very enjoy Your video is so relax, maybe you can make the asmr videos lol.
Thanks, I'm pleased to hear it! As for ASMR... I don't think I'd know where to start.
Is painting everything that is casted silver, "silver" a good choice
It depends on the overall look you're going for. By default, the silver plastic looks like plastic. So by using a silvery/metallic paint you can make it look more authentically metal. It gives it a nice sheen.
Time Spent Elsewhere thanks 😁😁😁
They should have given chrome parts for the head
That would have been great. R2 looks a bit dull compared to the shiny Bandai C3PO.
Does he not have wheels?
No, there's no wheels. He's mostly for display.
he went in the sand of tatooine, not in the mud of ww1
I'd like to think that this is shortly after he was submerged in the Dagobah swamp.
I was out at the water pouring scene. No thank you
