    Short games are something that I've only started to appreciate as I've gotten older, and I thing many of us tend to pass on them in favor of options that promise a greater "dollar-per-hour" value. I want to make a case for short games, and why more people should play them.

    I noticed you mention replay value a few times over the video, and that got me thinking. This year was the first year I started really going for these types of shorter, more impactful games, which I noticed I got a lot more out of. At the same time, I was noticing how my favorite games usually have the least replay value - I found out that above all else, I value surprise and novelty in games more than anything. Some games I played this year that I believe fit into this would be Undertale, Deltarune, Yume Nikki, Doki Doki Literature Club, and especially Outer Wilds. Replaying these games don’t even give me half the feelings they did the first time around, so for the latest few of those I played, I simply haven’t gone back and have a much better memory of what it was.
    As for the video, my new attitude has also made me notice that I’ve fallen out of love with super long sandbox open world games completely. I used to be addicted to Minecraft and Fortnite, and now mostly only play if friends invite me. I’m playing Pokémon Emerald right now, and its 30 hour play time is really dissuading me from finishing it (but it’s tied to a surprise for a friend so I just have to push through). I’m trying to make stuff more than consume stuff, and it’s a great new experience - and I’ve noticed that it comes full circle, as my core game design philosophy is respecting the player’s time.
    That edge joke was great. Glad I subscribed.

      It’s funny you mention Undertale et. al. One of the videos I was thinking about involves first playthroughs and how I didn’t replay Undertale for years because it kinda changed the way I think about choice in games.

    This video was fantastic from pacing and all the good points you brought up. And since you said you wanted more of bright memory infinite, i’d say ULTRAKILL can quince your thirst. The amount of crazy shit you can do in that game is amazing. I also liked how you bring out short games that could’ve been longer, and the fluff of long games. Congrats on the sponsor man! That's so sick the Voidigo team reached out. And great video too, editing was smooth and the writing from point to point was solid.
    The last year or so I've found myself with less and less time and not being able to play these 100+ hour RPGS that keep coming out. So I've been delving into short but depth-filled indie games as well. And man, there is some real SSS tier experiences to be had in 5 hours or less. Inscryption, Katana Zero, Milk outside a bag of milk, Everhood, just to name a few. I'm not sure if it's a state of the industry thing, a "I'm getting older" thing, or just my mood recently. But shorter, tight knit, experiences are becoming much more enjoyable to me then ones I have to spend weeks to months on. It's kind of wild that my top ten consists of games that are 50 hours long to games that are shorter than some movies. I love video games with my whole heart, but I'm slowly wanting to experience more of what life has to offer, just like you mentioned at the end. So I'm thankful for the growing indie scene and dev's scaling back for shorter, but still profound experience. Fantastic work once again man!

      Oh trust me I couldn't believe it when I saw the e-mail from them. Currently just hoping I get them their money's worth lol. I feel like the culture has definitely shifted in the last 10 years. Early 2010's I feel like most people would look at A Short Hike and think "What a scam!" But now you have so many short games that blow up. Stray, Little Miss Fortune, Unpacking, etc. I think we're at a point where people simply care about the quality of a game regardless of potential playtime, and it's awesome to see.

    • @nicreven
      @nicreven 7 месяцев назад

      Thinking about it a bit, that might be because of the massive shift we've seen to indie games, no?
      Like, nowadays, most games out there are made by indie devs who don't have the time or resources to make a huge game like a AAA studio could.
      Obviously there's a lot more that goes into it, but I feel like the indie scene is a pretty big part of it@@sl1ppey

    Great stuff, dude. I tend to prefer shorter things just bc of how, like you said, if something's short, you can't throw in a bunch of fluff and garbage. I made a video called "Games Are Too Long" back in, like, June, and I felt a lot of the same things you brought up, so I'm glad that I'm not the only one who's not really into super long games at this point.
    And I dig the point you made about how much you noticed you did in a single day; that's always a cool feeling. Recently, I started keeping track of any bigger things I do (concerts, hang with friends, anytime I do something unusual) and it's made me realize how much wild stuff happens if you keep your eyes peeled.
    Great video, man, I dig it

    Couldn't have said it better myself. One other way that I like to consider it from: there are so many great (and bad) games out there, and being able to play a half a dozen in the time you'd "finish" a live service game or an AAA blockbuster feels like a more enjoyable way to spend my time, and it's less a mental barrier to pick up a shorter game over something that I know will take a long while.
    Also tends to cost less over time smile

    I think its very funny that a short hike comes up in EVERY "value of short video games" video (among the ones I've seen at least I guess). on the topic of short games that should've been longer, I heard this about "En Garde!" possibly worth checking out
    i had the exact same character arc you described in the beginning and have now adopted a new ethos. i only have space for ONE long game and ONE roguetype (as per your definition) in my life at a time. I have been slowly chipping my way at elden ring since the game's release and have also been grinding spelunky 2 gradually since its release on switch (I'm close to completion on both, about 150 and 300 hours respectively). Other things come up in between but they cant be huge timesinks like either of them, so I mostly play short games in addition. It has been a system that has worked nicely for me.
    on that note, you should play TOEM. fun video

      I'm not sure. I think games would almost be treated like TV shows, where different snippets of said games would be released on schedules. Almost like tuning in to your weekly saturday morning cartoons, but interactive. From a child's perspective, that sounds cool as hell to me.

I think the progression system is what does it for me. Going on a hunt is like joining a quick match in multiplayer and they usually don’t last that long but every hunt contributes to your next goal which is usually just better gear. I'd rather have games to focus ENTIRELY on the game and nothing else. I couldn't care less about its art direction, soundtrack, characters, or story if the gameplay isn't adequate. I play video games to replay them and enjoy them, not for some immersion or plots. I like scoring, having challenges, and improving my skills!

    I think it's true to lots of types of media, movies, series, books, and, i think especially songs
    Last warning! Further lies tons of rambling!
    Good example of this can be band King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard. Band with 25 albums and about a dozen of live recordings, lots of times, they tend to write longer songs, and yeah, lots of times the song itself benefits from it, Crumbling Castle, Dragon, The River, Ice V, Change. Are all about 10 minutes long and all are bangers, but... If here their length feels natural, like it was intended to be like this, lots of other songs feel like they artificially prolongate them, best example, i would say is The Dripping Tap - it's 18:18, and lots of moments it feels exhausting, i get it, you played this riff almost 20 times already, move on! And then there are shorter ones in comparison. Slow Jam 1, Time = $$$, Organ Farmer, they all are about 2 minutes long each, bitesize songs that don't feel like need to be longer, they feel like this length suits them, just like those i named first... But on the other hand we have Cranes, Planes , Migraines which is 1:16, and it's a transition track, but you hear it's potential, but then it goes to next song, and i should clarify, that King Gizzard do seamless transitions flawlessly, and case with Cranes, Planes, Migraines is the same, previous song leads in this one, which leads to the next, perfection, but it still feels like there can be more in here...
    I dunno what my point here is, i just like talking about King Gizz

    I'm just gonna call them rogue games
    If you like fishing games, you should check out the FFXV fishing game. Highly recommend Everhood and Rogue Glitch.
    The value of the game comes from the impact it has one me. It's all about impact.

      @sl1ppey  7 месяцев назад

      Played Everhood and absolutely loved it. Someone else mentioned Rogue Glitch to me and I've wishlisted it!
      I've also meant to play FFXV. I feel like it got a lot of flak but a friend of mine from college absolutely loved it.

    • @kukukachu
      @kukukachu 7 месяцев назад

      Right on. Honestly, the Rogue Glitch recommendation was probably me lol.
      As for FFXV, the first half is fun, but very flawed (as the movie doesn't even match the game....), but the last half is absolute GARBAGE! You're talking to a person that is VERY salty about the whole thing. I kept supporting it (buying all the DLC), believing the devs actually wanted to fix the game, but it was all lies...I will probably NEVER buy a Squenix game full price ever again. @@sl1ppey
      Of course I played the original one and not the Royal Edition, but it's hard to want to come back after such a disappointment.

    I think it all boils down to entertainment: effort comparison. Games like witcher 3, red dead redemption, persona 5 royal etc. require you to hold the entire worldpoint while playing them. Slay the spire, Stacklands do not. Yet both are long games. Short games have more concise storylines and mechanics ( tunic, death's door, etc.). Did I enjoy zelda botw and hollow knight ? Yes. Will I ever visit it again ? Most probably not. Anyway, congrats on the sponsor and another banger of a video

    • @sl1ppey
      @sl1ppey  7 месяцев назад

      Yeah, pretty much. Admittedly, I still want and need to do a completion of Red Dead 2. I got so sidetracked in that game I don;t even think I made it a quarter of the way through the main story before putting it down. I just like fishing and hunting too much.

    Time, Dr. Freeman? Is it really that... time again? It seems as if you only just arrived. You've done a great deal in a small time-span. You've done so well, in fact, that I've received some interesting offers for your services. Ordinarily, I wouldn't contemplate them but these are extraordinary times. Rather than offer you the illusion of free choice, I will take the liberty of choosing for you... if and when your time comes round again. I do apologize for what must seem to you an arbitrary imposition, Dr. Freeman. I trust it will all make sense to you in the course of... well... I'm really not at liberty to say. In the meantime... this is where I get off.
