I think this puts into perspective how utterly terrifying the player character must be. Imagine being someone like Lionel or Eleonora or Gideon. You're not just a strong warrior, you're the *best*. Serving-directly-under-royalty levels of insane skill. You've felled foes who could take on entire squadrons of soldiers on their own. And then you meet this horrible, shriveled, impaled old man... who tears you apart with his bony little fingers as if you weren't even wearing armor. He's unimpressive to look at, but he's almost beyond comprehension in power. He's something eldritch and otherworldly. Even if you kill him, like Vyke or Millicent, it leaves a mark. But after that, you see this motherfucker walk in wearing stolen armor and a weapon they picked up off the ground, a supposed "fighter" that nobody's ever heard of, and they walk up to the old man without flinching to annihilate him in less than a moment. They don't even take a hit. Then the old man fucking explodes into a fiery god of divine madness, and this random Tarnished just squares up and beats the shit out of the god too. If I was any NPC in Elden Ring and I met my player character, I'd have nightmares for months.

A lot of the reason behind the whole imagination thing was Miyazaki’s experience with reading English books back when he couldn’t understand like half of it, so he used his imagination. You’re right in the “gameplay is first” sense, but not in the “yall need to stop” sense as while gameplay is indeed first important things still come after that (aforementioned lore, imagination, etc)

He kinda sounds (and fights) like Smeagol ngl. To be fair both are deranged old dudes with a supernatural force resembling a flaming eyeball taking over their free will and mind and basically putting them through hell.
it gets my nerves how passive those npcs are against boss and each other, when YOU are the one fighting them they leave you no fucking room, if they use magic they will spam it without ever stop until you interrupt their cast, and if they use melee attacks they just keep running after you and attacking relentless until you run out of stamina or start fighting back
It's weird how some NPCs seem to have massive damage penalties. Like, the Giant Crusher is one of the hardest hitting weapons in the game but Tragoth does less damage with it that some others do by just slashing with daggers.
Old man Midra is not to be underestimated if you don't have a weapon that can keep him stunlocked, he can easily kill you with that grab and his swipes do a lot of damage.
The amount of effort they've gone through creating a totally unique moveset for Small Midra is impressive. Especially knowing that most people would try to 1 hit/combo him just so they can get to the actual boss fight.... I love this boss fight and for me Midra was the highlight of the DLC.

Seeing Vyke win is like a redemption for his character. Seeing Shabriri fight so hard feels like he's so close to his goal and just needs this old man out of the way. Seeing Thops work with the one spell he has and fight like a boxer (pivoting from the wall, boxing the opponent in) is cool ah.
Vyke, Millicent, Nepheli Loux, & Bernahl were all NPCs I expected to do well given their prominence in the story, but Lionel's performance was by far the most surprising.

When you think how his first phase was such a joke and you see all NPC die that easily, and some of them were difficult to kill, it makes me laugh
