  • Our Dexter cattle make a lot of manure. A short thaw gives me an opportunity clean out the barn, and talk about how we take advantage of this great, stinky resource.

    We have a Case 885 (David Brown), cute 3 cylinder diesel that runs like a champ. Does all of our loader work. Good tractor that’s good at its job!!! We were going to buy a 656 but got outbid, it worked out great in the long run, saved some serious money.

    Another great video! If you ever get the chance, buy a set of tire chains for the loader tractor. You can pretty easily find used sets for around $300. You will be amazed at how much your traction increases in the ice and snow. Have a great day and keep the videos coming!😊

    Hi Pete
    Love the channel. I pick the coldest day when the ground is rock hard (poor man’s concrete) to clean pens. I’m OCD about mud and squishing my gravel away. It takes a lot of egg sales to pay for a tri-axel load of stone. Looks like you could use some ballast on your 3 point hitch to balance out the tractor and give that old girl a little more push. I’m a big fan of chains too for winter time work.

    In an ideal world you would have sliding walls (doors) in the rear wall. You could then open the doors and pile the manure behind the barn, by moving it out the back rather than having to trip it around the barn. Easy said than done !

    Just my 2 cents here: Feed that hay in the winter out in your hay field. Your heard will reseed the field themselves and the manure stays out in the fields instead of piling up in the barn. Therefore that is 1 stinky chore every year eliminated :)

    A mess but required job. Pete would adding weight to the back of the tractor help the traction of the tires and also balance out that front heavy load??

    • @JustaFewAcresFarm
      @JustaFewAcresFarm  4 года назад

      Hi Larry, the tires are filled with liquid & there's 140 lb wheel weights on them, but more weight certainly wouldn't hurt!

    I know you repurpose your manure by spreading it on your fields, but do you get enough that you could sell some of it for spring gardens in the area? It would take some effort to package for distribution and some advertising that may be to labor intensive to make it cost effective.

    How do you deal with the flys. I know during winter there isn't much but what about the rest of the year?
    Just a thought - what about talking about healthy cow pies?

    • @JustaFewAcresFarm
      @JustaFewAcresFarm  4 года назад +2

      Hi ZaneyMay, flies on the cattle are a big problem in the warm months, and I haven't come up with a good way to deal with them. We tried fly spray on the cattle but they run away when they see us with the bottle! I've thought about using the fly repellent ear tags, and the lick tubs that make the fly eggs sterile, but we haven't tried them yet. A video on healthy cow pies is a great idea; you can tell a lot from poop. I'll put that in the hopper.

    • @zaneymay
      @zaneymay 4 года назад

      @@JustaFewAcresFarm i had to look up lick tubs, never heard of them. Then I realized they are also called protein tubs.
      Is there a good company to order these from? My good I mean safe, clean.

    • @JustaFewAcresFarm
      @JustaFewAcresFarm  4 года назад +1

      @@zaneymay I have not found an organic source for these. We use Fertrell brand organic supplements and our rep doesn't carry protein tubs. We resorted to using the ones from Tractor Supply. They're heavy; 200 lbs each, so online ordering would probably cost a fortune if you could find a "clean" source. But Fertrell has bagged protein supplement if your cattle need more protein. And how do you tell? By looking at their manure of course!
