one of the best ultra and long distance bikepacking gear review i have ever seen. this is pure gold for newbies and bikers who have some unresolved issues after their first long distance trails. thanks you!
I have watched many "what I packed" videos about bikepacking, yours included things I never saw mentioned. I have that Park tool brush but wouldn't have thought of chopping off the handle so I can take it out on the trail. Innovation! Your English is great and your humble and authentic attitude is adorable. Looking forward to more videos from you!

@@GabrielRancourtCycling I’ve been using Squirt exclusively as my goto chain lube for over 8 years now. It works extremely well in our drier Australian climate. I also use the same chain cleaning brush as you. As well as two old wooden toothbrushes taped together with Gaffer Tape. I also have the same waterproof socks as you. Plus I use Goretex over-booties (an old Nordic skiing habit) to keep my feet extra dry. Another tip is to take along some silicone gloves to wear inside my full-fingered cycling gloves when it’s wet or cold. I’m going to adopt your suggestion to take electrolyte/salt tablets. On my last trip I experienced a lot of cramps in my quadriceps. Sharing our learning is what makes bikepacking a fabulous sport.
Good video. I do some bikepacking tours on mixed surfaces and i bring a microfiber cloth and the squirt lube. A quick wipe and lube every day or two makes a big difference
Really enjoyed your video. Informative and fun presentation . Congrats and subscribed. I never ride on the road without the Bontrager flare rear light.
Hello Gabriel, I liked your video very much. Your English is good enough and I like the accent! Next year I am going for my GDMBR! I am preparing for it and this gives me fun too, your advice of all the gear are important for me. The pump I am going to change to. The dewalt speaker is no longer available. I’ll keep the bell, and accept the noise! I used it twice during my two 6 months tours and I am used to it… in a way. Keep the material coming about long distance cycling. Last two tours were on a touring high recumbent, now I use the Sonder broken road, a high end touring bike with all new gear (for me). I am looking forward to this very much. Thanks again!
@@GabrielRancourtCycling in the end gear is not the most important. But it will definitely help. Motivation And perseverance is more important. On top of that; my GDMBR is not a race and I intend to enjoy (most) every moment of it!
@@mennosolarquesti agree ! If you ask me what is the most important… it would be to be ressourfull and flexible… that was the thing that helped the most for me. If you have any questions, let me know ! 😊
Really good information. I have learned a lot and am looking forward to viewing your Tour Divide video. Tu parles assez bien en anglais, beaucoup mieux que moi en français. Keep up the good work on your new channel.
One thing I highly recommend is bone conduction headphones. It's amazing for any outdoor sport since you also get perfect awareness aside from the additional sound. Or honestly if you are just commuting with bike.
Gabe that was a brilliant video. Well done!! Can't wait to see more! If it helps, as you plan videos, it might be fun to talk about bike maintenance, bike set up and gear, food and even about clothing. As you mentioned, you dealt with some pretty epic weather conditions- driving rain, intense cold, snow, desert heat ... would love to know what clothing you brought along but also more tips and tricks on what you wore and when. Thanks for considering any related topics. Looking forward to seeing more!
Thanks for the video - very insightful! What surprised me most is the squirt lube. I used it on my commuter bike during all conditions for all of 2023 - and it was awful in the wet, 80 - 100 km until I had to re-wax. While 80 - 100 km might be well inside your re-lubing window of 4 - 5 hours, I would have never considered taking it on ultras - and even after your positive review I still have my doubts. AFAIK wax based lubes take time to get between the rollers on the chain and, in theory, should not work as well when applied and ridden immediately. Did you test it on other long rides before taking it with you? Were there any differences when the wax had longer time to cure, like during longer rests?
I have not seen any difference with immediate use and resting… 80-100km is perfect for me. Even in dry condition, i apply lube every 40 to 50km or so. I will not go back to other solutions. 👍
Can you tell us a little about your tire pressure numbers? I think I always pump my tires too high. Would love to hear what got you through the TD. Thanks
@@dhil1592 Thanks ! With waterproof gloves, you end up getting wet from the inside anyway.. the key is keeping the whole system ventilated ! The bags did the trick ! I have other tricks and hacks to show in other videos if you are interested !
I looked at the dewalt speaker and it attaches with magnets to your clothes. How did you attach yours to the handlebar? Looks like you have a strap attached to yours?
as for the socks, i just use one of these real small bottles of this dr bronner stuff, you know it just that little bit of extra nive feeling if you feel the socks are kind of clean.
@@GabrielRancourtCycling Absolutely I use it. And you need to let it dry. maybe when you did the CDT you did not have dust and you did fine. Good for you. But if you put on a wax lube where there is dust, you are doomed.
@@lidarman2i used it in dust environnement, in mud, xc races and enduro races in quebec and no issues. Are you using the squirt and let it dry or an other lube ?
@@GabrielRancourtPhotography I use squirt on one bike and Silca on another Bike. maybe I am not the same kind of rider that you are but with either, every 300 km I do a drip the night before riding so it can dry. You live in Quebec so conditions are different I guess. happy Riding brother.
