In Singapore, they also officially call it "Lunar New Year" rather than "Chinese New Year," as it’s made up of multi-ethnicities. LNY is not specifically celebrated by the Chinese community only. There was recent news in Singapore regarding a Chinese national student studying at NTU who defaced the Lunar New Year celebration message that was put out on the campus recently. The Persian New Year is called Nowruz, which falls in March. Hindu and Buddhist calendars of South and Southeast Asia and the Islamic and Jewish calendars that originated in the Middle East are also celebrated by other cultures, such as the Nisga'a people of Canada, but on a different day or month. The determination of the first day of a new lunar year varies by culture and has different names. As Singaporeans, we celebrate our diversity and shouldn’t play along with China’s warmongering schemes. Happy Lunar New Year to everyone! ❤
Hello! Fellow Singaporean here! I think most of us still call it Chinese New Year in Singapore as it’s undoubtedly the biggest Chinese festival celebrated by ethnic Chinese Singaporeans. Of course we say 農曆新年 in Mandarin, but many of us also call it 華人新年 (Chinese people new year). The “Chinese” in “Chinese New Year” simply refers to our ethnicity. And we have been using this term way before China becomes the superpower it is today. I personally prefer CNY over LNY, but I don’t get angsty if others choose to call it LNY! 😂 I think LNY is somewhat a misnomer because 農曆 doesn’t equate to the Lunar Calendar. The Chinese calendar is based on both the patterns of the moon (lunar) and the sun (solar). Hence if one chooses to be pedantic, the term “Lunisolar New Year” would be more apt. 😂 Also, although Christmas is celebrated by almost everyone in Singapore regardless of our religious backgrounds, we don’t call it “a certain holy man’s birthday” or something else just to make it inclusive. Likewise, I don’t think it’s inappropriate to call the festival CNY and at the same time embrace people of all ethnicities and backgrounds in the celebration. Of course if you are in Korea or Vietnam, which also celebrate this festival, you won’t want or need to use the term CNY, as they have their own way of referring to it in their own language and their corresponding English translations or transliterations. So to all who celebrate Happy Chinese New Year! ❤
The fact people can get upset over the fact that people call a holiday shared by multiple cultures and countries different from what they call it just shows a lack of spine in my eyes. Especially a holiday where I can't think of a single way calling it something else harms you in any way other than your pride, which clearly is thin ice to begin with at that point apparently
Yeah, but CCP wants to be the voice of some pan-Asian Han-centric hegemony. It is the Lunar New Year, and nobody needs permission from China to celebrate it. The CCP is trying to use it as an regional control tool.
💯! Reminds me of when some folks in America get all bent out of shape and offended when someone says “Happy Holidays” instead of “Merry Christmas”. Its like, go ahead and say whatever phrase/greeting you want and let another say whatever phrase/greeting they want, the sentiment is the same: its meant to convey peace and love, just take it for what it is…a greeting/well wishing positive statement and not make such a thing political 😂. I don’t care if someone around Nov.-Jan says to me Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays, I just reply back with the same.
Lack of spine sounds like a serious medical condition, do you mean no spine instead xD? Kinda funny how every single thing is sensitive these days, and it harder to make jokes without offending someone. Even comedians these days can get slapped in the face for making "inappropriate" jokes, come on.
My parents’ reasoning is that the lunar new years they celebrate in east Asia and south east Asia (where there is a significant amount of Chinese immigrants) originated from China. Those who get angry over the name “lunar new year” probably want to claim what they believe they own but is stolen by others. For me, the lunar new years probably did originate from China, but over time they had more or less become independent/different cultures, so it can be weird to call all them Chinese new years. Although I don’t think the Chinese should say “happy lunar new year” to other Chinese, it appears strange to me.
Lunar means moon, it doesn't belong to a particular country. Just like Christmas, Lunar New Year can be celebrated by any countries that are influenced by ancient Chinese culture. Culture is not exclusive. For countries like Korea, Singapore, Vietnam, etc, they have formed their own cultures during hundreds of years. Forcing them to change their own words into 'Chinese New Year' is definitely unnecessary and meaningless. Isn't it ridiculous to change 'Christmas' into 'Italian Christmas'? Though I am Chinese myself, I have to admit that some of Chinese people are too militant due to the propaganda.

“Chinese New Year ”是华人春节,但“Korea New Year ”可就是韩国春节了。

Well said, Lele!
Thanks!
lunar new year 非常适合,很精准
“Chinese New Year ”是华人春节,但“Korea New Year ”可就是韩国春节了。
Couldn’t agree more! 👍👍👍👍👍
