Bring it down 7-8dB" and the rest is history. I think Jason said the bass was his fault in order to be nice and not throw Lars under the bus. And Jason's bass on Garage Days a year prior is very much audible, so it's not like it's the fault of his actual bass either.

I dont think he needs to carry any of the guilt for his bass being muted. His playing was exceptional on this record u can hear he was playing his soul out here probably trying to prove himself only for his efforts to be crushed. Best song on ...And Justice For All, in my opinion. One is a close 2nd. Oh and here are the lyrics:
    Blackened is the end
    Winter it will send
    Throwing all you see
    Into obscurity
    Death of Mother Earth
    Never a rebirth
    Evolution's end
    Never will it mend
    Never
    Fire
To begin whipping dance of the dead
    Blackened is the end
To begin whipping dance of the dead
    Color our world blackened
    Blistering of earth
    Terminate its worth
    Deadly nicotine
    Kills what might have been
    Callous frigid chill
    Nothing left to kill
    Never seen before
    Breathing nevermore
    Never
    Fire
To begin whipping dance of the dead
    Blackened is the end
To begin whipping dance of the dead
    Color our world blackened

    Blackened
    Opposition...contradiction...premonition...compromise
    Agitation...violation...mutilation...planet dies
    Darkest color
    Blistered earth
    True death of life
    Termination...expiration...cancellation...human race
    Expectation...liberation...population...lay to waste
    See our mother
    Put to death
    See our mother die
    Smoldering decay
    Take her breath away
    Millions of our years
    In minutes disappears
    Darkening in vain
    Decadence remains
    All is said and done
    Never is the sun
    Never
    Fire
To begin whipping dance of the dead
    Blackened is the end
To begin whipping dance of the dead
    Fire
    Is the outcome of hypocrisy
    Darkest potency
    In the exit of humanity
    Color our world blackened

I wasn't sure how I felt about the vocals, at first, but they make everything sound spacious and wide--precisely what the original recording lacked; it was flat as a tire, this is rich and clear. Beautifully reworked. I've always thought Justice was a fantastic album, but recorded/mixed horribly. You can't hear a single note from the bass guitar on the whole record.
    Well done.

You can hear bass on To Live Is To Die. That part in the interlude that sounds kinda swelly and cello-ish? That's bass with volume swells.

    • @chrisrobertson1443
      @chrisrobertson1443 4 года назад +2

I remember watching a video interview with the guy that produced the album for them; evidently lars told him "turn the bass down so you can barely hear it, then lower it another 6dB"it's lars' fault you can't hear bass on the Justice album.

Ahdy's obra maestra of remastering tipping the scales to make Blackened Metallica's obra maestra. I was on the fence as to what Metallica's best song is...hearing all of the instruments at their maximum potential here tips me over to Blackened. So much to like: the goosebump-provoking intro, Jason's main riff, the breakdown and the crushing bulldozer slow riff in the middle, the bridge that evokes the chorus and blasts the 2nd half of the solo into warp drive, Lars' "happy accident" time change after the solo, Hetfield's vocals..."DAR-KEST PO-TEN CE-E-EEE!" This is peak Ahdy and peak Metallica. (No disrespect to Cliff...he definitely influenced their songwriting here.) 🔥🔥🔥

Bro this is s pretty pure and amazing remaster and remix. I love that the bass doesn’t saturate the whole mix but also doesn’t sit inaudible in the mix. It’s in there and plays the role needed. Great work

Saw them tour this album, it was one of the most outstanding concerts of my life. I had a stiff neck and ears ringing from the pure loudness of the gig. It was like something physical that lifted you off your feet and took you on an amazing supersonic trip. Metallica in their Hey day were unassailable.
