Have you seen Good Will Hunting? The World According to Garp, is another interesting movie. I think his first in a serious role.
A surprisingly good one is Man of the Year. But my favorite is The Fisher King.

Robin Williams passing is the only celebrity death that brought tears to my eyes. Forever thankful for the laughter and joy he gave me and my family thrue the years.

Those twins you mentioned were also used in Terminator 2. The scene where the new model enters the psyche hospital. Oh, and Bruno Kirby played a young Clamenza in Godfather 2. )

@@TheAndre8900 When I saw them I had to do a double take. I knew I recognized them, they looked just like how they did in T2. I never knew they used twins for that scene, I always heard about the scenes where Linda Hamilton's twin sister was in.
The majority of Robin William’s dialogue while doing the radio show was improv. Check out The World According to Garp and Moscow on the Hudson for two earlier dramatic/comedic roles. Garp is a great movie.
I've seen The World According to Garp long ago and recorded it on videotape. Had some hilarious moments and Robin was just brilliant. Didn't like the ending that was all, but takes nothing away from it.
Moscow on the Hudson really hit home back in the day when that came out because of the cold war. Was interesting to know also that Robin Williams actually learned Russian for this movie.
The Fisher King is pretty moving, but also wonderful sensitive acting.
Loved Garp, but glad I also read the novel so I could completely understand the story. Its incredibly relevant even today.
The reason everyone was laughing in the studio scenes was that those scenes were completely improvised by Williams. They started the cameras and just let him go.
I briefly met Robin in 2011. Such a sweet, sweet man. I got into acting because of him. When he passed, I stayed in bed and cried for 3 days straight. It´s taken me 5 years to even be able to watch one of his movies again and think about him without crying. And I´ve watched them all now. 4 days ago, it was his birthday, which he shared with my Mum. RIP, Robin, you wonderful, wonderful man.
Same I cried for days as well but I actually binge watched his movies to mourn him in my way and I even watched “what dreams may come” which you can imagine the balling during that one. He has been my favorite actor since I was older enough to watch movies that weren’t cartoons 😢🥲

@@ToniMcGinty I can understand that his death really hit me hard. It felt like I lost a family member or close friend. I didn’t even realize that film gets hate, I think it’s a beautiful film it’s super brilliant the way they portray what the whole process would be like. It’s a masterpiece in my humble opinion
@@elizabitty213 I agree. Ironically, the hate comes from two polar opposite places. Some think it´s pretentious, while others think it´s a contrived and maudlin representation of the afterlife. Not to mention the people who have religious issues with the film.

RW's range is so great - I always recommend this, Dead Poet Society, Good Will Hunting, Insomnia, and One Hour Photo.
One hour photo is criminally underrated.
Director Barry Levinson gave Robin the green light to improvise as much as he wanted. I remember my parents seeing it when it came out during the Christmas holiday (as Disney wanted the film to qualify for oscar consideration), and they loved it.
This movie cemented Robin has a movie star!!!
It was also the beginning of Robin’s love-hate relationship with Disney.
The real life Adrien was actually conservative and a Republican who stated that had he done half of what was portrayed in the film, he woulda been buried under the brig. RIP to both men.
His improve was SO good!
"Awakenings" with Robin Williams and Robert Deniro was IMO both of their best acting work. And that is a very high bar for both.
They are both amazing. I can't decide who was better

"Seeing as how the V.P. is such a V.I.P., shouldn't we keep the P.C. on the Q.T.? 'Cause if it leaks to the V.C. he could end up M.I.A., and then we'd all be put out in K.P." VP and VIP are of course Vice President and Very Important Person. The guy Kirby plays likes to say "PC" instead of "press conference." To "keep it on the QT" is a phrase meaning to keep it quiet or keep a piece of information within a certain number of people only. The VC is often how the military referred to the Viet-Cong. MIA is "Missing in Action" which means someone is lost in the field and might be dead. KP is "Kitchen Patrol", which is kitchen clean-up duties usually done by junior personnel and which might be assigned as a punishment for soldiers who screwed up.
I think KP could also include the menial tasks involved with cooking like peeling and prepping vegetables and other general gofer errands for the cooks. Normally that doesn't sound so bad, until you realize you have to prep enough for the entire base to eat. In short, you become the cooks' bitch.

Great film. I love how it presents both the US and Vietnamese perspectives, and the great diversity in each. Even how enemies can be personally friendly to each other- hardly anyone is truly evil or truly good, we're all just people.
The twins were in T2. One played the security guard at the facility where Sarah was being held. The other was the T-1000 disguised as him.
One of my favorite Robin Williams movies is The Fisher King which also starred Jeff Bridges. Other favorites include The World According to Garp and World's Greatest Dad (directed by Bobcat Goldthwait).
How dare you fail to mention The Adventures of Baron Munchausen?

Wow, this is a surprise to be sure, but a welcomed one.
The scene where he meets the troops on the road is totally amazing and his performance on the radio shortly after crushes me.
He's probably most remembered for Dead Poets Society and Good Will Hunting. But I would also recommend checking out one of his stand up shows, he's no PG13 in that to be sure!
Live on Broadway 2002 was hilarious

Check out the Time-Life DVD set which has most of his stand up specials (personal favorites are LIVE AT THE MET and BOARDWAY 2002, but his very first special has him riffing with the late John Ritter; apparently they were in the same acting class and always played off each other during the closing of their classes)
Hopefully they get around to seeing Robin’s best performance as Armand Goldman in “The Birdcage”.
I also want to second The Birdcage. It would be so fun to react to! I'm into violent horror, sci-fi, and action movies so I went into The Birdcage expecting to hate it. A movie about a middle aged gay couple in Miami? But it is honestly one of the funniest, warmest, surprising comedies I've ever watched. And Williams is god tier in it.

Fun Fact... every take with Robin talking into the mic during broadcasts were ALL ad-libbed. Director told him to have at it, and Robin just went with it. This movie just showcases the best of Robin Williams.
Good Morning Vietnam has so many amazing audio/visual and tonal juxtapositions, and is one of the best examples of how comedy can enhance drama and vice versa.
And Robin Williams, man... what more can I say?!
His best movie, and it's close. But his overall performance, comedically and dramatically, is off the charts. He can go from believably serious to hilarious in about 5 second flat.
I didn't hear them mention this, but Adrian Cronauer was a real life USAF radio DJ who was stationed in Crete & volunteered to go to Vietnam in 1965 and took over the 6am morning show. He passed away in 2018 aged 79.
Not sure if you noticed but Lt. Steven Hauk, was played by the late great Bruno Kirby, he's played many memorable characters including a young Peter Clemenza along side Robert DeNiro in the Godfather 2.
We completely missed that connection!
Bruno was also great in The Freshman..with Marlon Brando and Matthew Broderick..which is a spoof on the Godfather..
Bruno was great in everything, from City Slickers to Sleepers to When Harry Met Sally... he is missed.
Probably one of the funniest sad movies out there, with one of the best soundtracks to date, which actually has the full legnths of some of his skits.
The soundtrack was so good!

If you haven't seen "The Fisher King" with Robin Williams, you definitely should react to it. One of the greatest Williams' roles in my opinion and absolutely amazing film.

Definitely my favorite Robin Williams movie. Dead Poets Society, Awakenings, and Good Will Hunting were good too. Cadillac Man and Moscow On The Hudson were pretty good early films too.

oh god don't let them watch The Deer Hunter... the first 45 minutes is just wedding dancing. not even a plot that slowly unfolds at the wedding... just wedding dancing.
His character was a real forces radio presenter, he changed the formal way the military had always done things. You have much to learn about the reality of guerrilla warfare, Vietnam and Afghanistan very similar in that respect.
Fun to catch actual Adrian Cronaeur radio footage, I think it was authentic, in movies like Apocalypse Now, when he introduces “Satisfaction” and young Laurence Fishburne breaks out dancing “ew la la”

The 2 actors playing the censoring twins...recall them from Terminator 2. "He" was the guard the T1000 turned into. Cameron, being a genius, used the twins so special effects weren't necessary and the shot was easily perfect.
The twins are also in Gremlins 2 which y'all *have* to watch. I love watching movies "with" the two of you. Thank you for your channel.
The Adventures Of Barron Munchausen. There's a classic little known gem Robin Williams movie that nobody has reacted to yet.
That is such a great recommendation, a fantastic one of a kind film from Terry Gilliam!

Fun Fact: The real person Williams' character was based on, Adrian Cronauer, played a fictional version of himself as the 'AN Radio DJ' in Street Fighter The Movie.
If you're looking for other Robin Williams to check out sometime in the future, put "What Dreams May Come" onto the list. Obviously he starred in a lot of gooooood movies but that one stuck with me.

Robin Williams as Popeye. Some people dislike this film, but I have always enjoyed him playing such an iconic cartoon character in a live action film.
Popeye is definitely one of those movies where anyone else playing him would have just made it a ridiculous movie that would have been a total failure. Robin made it good
The problem is that Popeye just wasn’t a good movie. Williams did his best under the circumstances, and it really does accomplish the cartoon-come-to-life feat.

Cool little piece of history Adrian cronauer was a real. After he left Vietnam he was eventually replaced by Pat sajak who eventually became the host of wheel of Fortune and still is.
This was so enjoyable, and I must say again, you did an excellent edit because I only saw this when it came out the one time and I had no problem following the movie! I think I took this movie for granted when it was released but seeing it now, it was really a warm feeling to see him back at his prime, in one of his breakthrough roles. When he first came out, he was known as the most extreme, gonzo, silliest comedian there was.....so for him to transition to serious roles was not a "slam dunk", and he did it pretty quickly ("The World According To Garp" was the one that did it....."Good Morning Vietnam" really took him to the next level.) He had such a great face for emotion, I was thinking that while we watched it. Ahhh. Poor Robin. :(
Also: NOW I recognize ALL of the actors! Back then, I just knew Robin Williams and "Uncle Floyd" Floyd Vivino. And I'm sure I recognized Bruno Kirby, since he was in everything back then. But the late, great J.T. Walsh, Robert Wuhl , Forrest Whitaker and ESPECIALLY Richard Portnow....I didn't know any of those guys when I first saw this! That was a huge part of the fun for me, just now, watching all of these great character actors do their bits.
Hard to believe Robin is gone, huh? I'm sure everyone has their Robin favorites; mine is still probably "The World According To Garp", his first or second movie. (It's an even better book). I was also just laughing at his performance in Terry Gilliam's "Baron Munchausen" this morning, I had forgotten he was in that. "The Fisher King" is another Terry Gilliam movie that I remember him doing a great job with. "Awakenings" with Robert De Niro is another good dramatic role for Robin, he plays the real life doctor Oliver Sacks.

"It's a wonderful world" playing during these scenes is one of the most surreal moments I ever experienced in movies.
I know someone that met Robin Williams on a movie set. Him entertaining the troops in the field was how he would do it in real life. He gave all the people watching a 20 minute show just because he had that much energy on set . It was sad how it had to end.
Side note: It's a pleasure to watch both of you not only for your intelligent commentary but also because you seem genuinely in love, have very similar mind-sets & support each other. Kudos

I know veterans that were in Vietnam and said he played this part perfect, it was how they used to be with the music everything.

Such a great review. It would have been Robin Williams 70th birthday recently. He was a fantastic actor, his energy radiates out of him in every role he played. Some actors have that wonderful way of engaging you into the charachter that they play, he was one of the greatest IMHO.
Just glad I grew up with him, Mork and Mindy, Stand Up, Acting, Charity Work and Films. He was very good friends with a comedian he met in the 70s, from my part of the woods in Scotland, Billy Connolly. He used to go golfing with him, and the two kept in touch for years right up until his death. It could have been through this friendship he managed the Scottish accent for Mrs Doubtfire.
Another essential Robin Williams film to watch and review is Terry Gilliam's "The Fisher King". He and Jeff Bridges are totally amazing in it, and the two female leads are too.
I'd like to recommend two awesome "Vietnam" movies that not many people seem to mention. Coming Home (1978) and Hamburger Hill (1987). These are some of the most realistic interpretations of the war in Vietnam and are among the true classics.
Robin Williams nails it in Popeye (1980) and extra bonus as Shelly Duvall really nails it as born for the role Olive Oyl in Popeye directed by Robert Altman. Fun movie to watch.
And at 3:20 an answer to the Terminator 2 question, no CGI, these guys were twins.

Dear Lord, I miss Robin Williams.
Comedies in war setting can be tricky. Surprisingly little "reactor" attention is given to the awesome series M*A*S*H, set in the Korean War with light drama, pervasive comedy and some reasonable bitterness or frustration with the war itself. Maybe try it! It's never overbearing, rarely pointless and pretty funny. 👍👍
They should react to the movie, "MASH". It's what spawned the TV series of course.
@@sparky6086 which is the irony as the movie producers of MASH hate the TV show and basically wouldn’t acknowledge the existence of it.
M*A*S*H , the movie is a great Korean War (dark) comedy. Has a great football segment in it. Love movies that have sports as a side feature. Such as “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s nest” which had a great basketball game, and Jack Nicholson’s baseball World Series “call”. (One the list of the best movies ever). The Longest Yard (Burt Reynolds version) is another good comedy to review - with a football game in it.
@@brianherr2699 Even in 1970, there was still a lot of animosity between the movie industry and the television industry. To me the first 2 years of the MASH TV show captured the spirit of the MASH movie, so I don't think the movie makers had a credible reason to complain.
The TV show began to change, but if it hadn't, it likely would never have been able to run or remain popular for so many seasons. It had to adjust or they would need to recycle plots too often, and it would have grown stale.
@@sparky6086 I never forgave the TV show for so radically changing the character of Trapper. In the movie he's his own character with some pretty uncomfortable views, but in the TV show he's just Hawkeye's moral shadow.

the movie was shot on location in Bankok. The movie featured a young Forrest Whitaker. And two actors who appeared later in City Slickers, Bruno Kirby and Noble Willingham.

Another movie you might want to watch that is really under the radar, but also shows another side of the Vietnam War is called, "Don't Cry It's Only Thunder". It's actually really good.
The scene with the soldiers in the trucks was with US servicemen as extras. The scene with "what a wonderful world" against the shots of the war is a classic.
Try "One Hour Photo" for Robin Williams best dramatic role.

Dickerson is played by JT Walsh, who played a lot of villains and flawed characters. Great actor.
Williams had a lot of big movies. But you mentioned in the intro an interest in his dramatic performances. Very Very early in his career, he made a movie called 'Moscow on the Hudson'. Like this movie, it balances funny, sweet, and dramatic beautifully. I highly recommend it.

The thing about this movie, is it 's arguably the moment when Robin Williams went from just being a comedian to being an actor as well. This movie really showed his range as an actor. He was such a wonderful talent, and he is deeply missed.
Even though he didn't win an Oscar for this movie, Robin Williams won a golden globe for best actor.
I spent time with Robin on & off in the 70's. He lived down the road from me in Topanga Canyon above Malibu. I designed an "estate" gate for him in 78 that still stands. He had 2 settings: On & Off. When he was On, he was non-stop. Had to ask him to dial it back a couple times because it could be a bit much to take especially when you had a hangover or was trying to have a quiet moment. When he was Off, it was hard to get him to laugh or have a positive outlook. At times like that one would start to miss the On mode & vise versa.

Yes, most of Robin's dialogue was improve and just pure William's nuttyness. Great movie.

Robin Williams started as a stand-Up comic during 1970s. Can remember seeing him on the "Tonight Show with Johnny Carson". He started out with a few bit appearances on the TV show, "Happy Days". He then got an off-shoot TV show, Mork & Mindy", where he played an alien (Mork from Ork) sent to Earth to study earthlings - was an excellent show.
Robin Williams’ character is based on a real DJ that was in Vietnam who played Rock and Roll and pissed off his superiors by talking about the war.
All of the “On Air” scenes are 100% improvised by Williams. The director said he would just say “Action” and Robin Williams would manage to give them something different for every take. So all the impressions and such are all improvised. He was a master at improvisation, one of the best to ever live in fact. His loss is immense, there will never be another person like him, he was a one of a kind comedy genius who also happened to be a great actor and a genuinely amazing person based on accounts of people who met him.

So glad you guys saw this movie because it was a childhood favorite of mine. I also love when reactors do less known, non-blockbuster (but high quality) films that may inspire more people to see them.
Another great Robin Williams film was Dead Poet's Society which is my favorite Williams' film of all. If you haven't seen it already it would be great if you did a reaction to it too.

HOLY SHIT I recognize those twins from Terminator 2. So THATS how they did the morphing effect with the security guard scene. He literally has an identical twin. That’s amazing.
They were also in Gremlins 2.

This is such a good film. The right blend of comedy, drama, and heart. One of those under appreciated gems! You should add Death to Smoochy, The Fisher King, The World According to Garp, Toys, One Hour Photo, and Insomnia to the Robin Williams reactions list. I'm more partial to Fisher King (directed by Terry Gilliam) and Smoochy (with Edward Norton) for their unusual stories, and the last two are just... dark.
Sincerely miss Robin, what a talent. Never be another like him...
JT Walsh (Dickerson) is another great actor who died way too soon, and worth many points in "Hey It's That Guy" movie bingo.

Name drop alert... I worked on on film with Robin Williams and whoever said "never meet your heroes, they'll only let you down" never met him. Always a legend.
I have fond memories of this movie, one of the few movies I remember watching with my grandmother.
You are correct in the fact that a lot of his “on air” time was improvised. There is probably not even a quarter of what he recorded that made the final cut of the movie.
There is a couple of clips I’ve watched elsewhere (on RUclips) that have a lot of what didn’t make the movie, and are quite funny.

The best thing about the film is the tone shift, in my opinion. The fact that the real world intrudes on the fantasy makes the fantasy that much more funny and special to watch. It rewards repeated viewing. The supporting cast are surprisingly funny too - Bruno Kirby is a very talented actor, as are Robert Wuhl and Forrest Whittaker. Watching them develop as the movie progresses is almost as much fun as watching Robin Williams tearing the radio to pieces.
Sending him to Guam was a blessing. No war, nice place, nice people.
Dead Poets Society is a must.
