Bro... DS 1 tone knob is EQ Shape Character , not a Treble boost. You miss understand. The best DS 1 SETTING : 1. Get the good and Right Clean amp set , not too bright sharp. Tube amp will be better. 2. DS1 : Tone 10 oclock Level 2 oclock Dist 3 oclock or full Dist. Then you compare all the pedals with exact same potentio level. Do not change the parameter.
For anyone wondering, you can't just set the knobs the same and expect them to sound exactly the same. There is something called parts tolerance as well as component drift. These two factors mean even if you have two pedals of the same model and year, you have to adjust the knobs to get them to match. You can't just set everything at noon and expect them to sound the same.
Ffs I'll sell my 90s ds 1 if y'all creaming over it that bad 😂 I'm more of a tube screamer mod guy anyway. And old Thomas wah mod, but I love my old Octavia and fuzz peeps
I can see how a gigging player might have 2. One as a backup. Even 3 if you don't want to unpack your gig rig at home, so get a third for the bedroom rig. Maybe even 4 if you leave one at your parents/friends. But ... how does someone end up with 7? 😆 Anyway, good to see you having fun!
I'll go with the '83 DS-1 Andy, that's too many DS-1's. Great video. I've been considering collecting the different versions. I was disappointed to the hear the '79 DS-1 got knocked out in the first round.
This video was far more enjoyable to watch than it has any right to be. I was captivated to the very end. Great job Andy, and yes, that is too many DS-1s.
I have been a DS-1 user for years - my favorite pedal of all time. I have the black label from the 80's which I bought in a music store in the 80's and it has been on my board ever since. Recently it developed a hum and it's really hard to use live, so I need a new one. Thanks for this shootout. I'm going to give the "W" a try and see how it goes.
What about the DS-1X ? In all of the video comparisons of it with the DS-1, all years and versions thrown in, it sounded better. Yes, even better than the Waza Craft. To me at least.
Had my 83 version since 94 and it's still my main pedal! Have always loved the Nevermind tone but you have to set that tone knob to 10 o'clock to get the full joy. Oh and played through a Vox AC30 or a Mesa...Fender amps suck with it. Totally agree with you though on the Waza craft being the best of the bunch but aside from the 83 version. If I ever had to upgrade, DS-1 W is the way to go.
Which version has SMD parts and is a bit*h to modify? I may have to trade for an older pedal I can mod or the waza for more headroom to where it’s usable in my pedal stack.
The Waza sounds the best ! Why do you set them so harsh tho - do you ever try around 9 o’clock on the tone instead of noon? 😊 1983 2nd place then black, then 2022 🎸🔥🎶✨
hit 666 on the likes. That's too many ds-1's. But I can finally lay this to rest. They all sound so similar no need to worry what version you buy. Go cheap. Only reason I want a version 1 is they look great beat up. cheers
Very well done !!! Now I know when they are trying to rip me off selling any MIT DS-1 for more than 50 euros. I also know there is no reason to spend 300 euros on some half fryed MIJ vers. I that case rather get de WC vers. This video has made me wan´t to give the DS1 an other try, when in 2 previous attempts I swore to my self I would never buy this shit pedal again...... The power of influence I guess you can call it. I would go for whatever model pre-smd so I can get my solder iron in it. "Mate you have too many, sell me one cheap" LoL. Regards to you all out there !!!
Why do i feel like the first two and the waza are going to sound the best? I had one of these that I found at an old music store that my trumpet instructor had bought. (My first job, helping to clean out the old stuff from the store). This was in 1997. But i don't know exactly how old the pedal was or if it had a silver screw. I scored some pretty cool stuff from this place. Sadly i don't know what happened to any of it.
Great comparison Andy. At the end, they sound very similar so i'm gonna stick with my Boss DS-1 v3 made in 2008. But between you and me, Andy... that's too many DS-1s!
I just bought the '22 like a month ago and I'm pretty pleased how close it is to the older ones. Saved a little money buying the base model over the Waza, that's a good enough excuse to drop $1,500 on a Kurt Cobain Jaguar, right?... Right? Andy that's too many DS-1's.
Since you are collecting DS 1's, you need the DS-1X. The Waza version is killer though. I had an '83 version of the DS1. I graduated high school that year. Also, are you running those older ones at 12 V?
I did a similar test myself a few months ago (before I saw your great video) and came to EXACTLY the same conclusion. The Wazacraft on the custom mode was just the best sound. I only had two other DS-1s to compare to but I found the same thing. They’re definitely getting something very right with the Wazacraft series.
Hey Andy, that's not quite enough DS-1s! I was fortunate to recently get my hands on a v3 2006-ish era DS-1 with the Keeley mods (Seeing eye and Ultra). Quite possibly my favourite pedal.
Congratulations, fantastic video! I agree with you 100%, the Waza Craft series is awesome and I say this for all waza pedals! The difference with the standard ones is felt above all under your fingers, while you are playing. If I were you, I'd keep the 2006 ds-1 and the Craft waza (absolutely the best of all: Waza Craft!) And I'd sell the two 79 and 83 ds-1s made in Japan, so you also recover quite a bit ' of money. Thanks for the nice video! Greetings from Italy .
@@TheGuitarGeek Not only a looper, but doing the output balance the way you do with '79 vs '83. ALL pedal shootouts by EVERYBODY. You did the test video genre a good thing, Andy! Setting standards is GOOD. OK? OK!

You have gone down a similar rabbit hole that I had with HM-2s. At one time I had 18, including old 80s/90s clones, but I sold many of them because they all sounded very similar and in isolation were "that sound". I still have 5 Boss HM-2s (3 Japanese 2 Taiwanese) but I won't be buying the Waza version. Can't say I had a favourite DS-1 out of that lot, I'd take any (I think mine is a V3). Andy, that's too many DS-1s!
Thank God now I'm a new member of The End of The Video Club! Thank you for this very useful video! You got a new subs! And also Andy..., that's too many DS-1s!
Andy: that's too many DS-1s! But it was cool to hear the difference between all of them, and how they all sounded a bit different, yet, kinda the same. I just looked mine up, which I remember buying new around '93 or '94, and yep: and it was made in May '93...the tail end of the v1 line. I use mine with a PRS CE24 bolt-on (got around the same time as the pedal) and a Silverface Fender Twin Reverb (I think it's around '76). Used with a BOSS GE-7 and a really old Ibanez II Compressor (it is noisy, and I love it!), I can make the thing sound fantastic...probably with enough tone to give the DS-2 and the Waza Craft a run for their money.
Iv got an old ds1 And a new ds1 Took the backs off Old one has more circuits than a mig fighter. The new one has a small finger nail sized PCP board 2022 pedal is louder Feed backs first. I like it. Being a Hendrix fan.
As far as the difference between the 1983 and 2022 is more due to the 30+ year old components. The 1983 is a bit darker and full because of it. I have both the 1983 and the Waza. Love both. The DS-1 is imho the best distortion because it can go from boost to overdrive to distortion to fuzz. Buy two and you can get all three via two footswitches. One for OD, the other for Distortion, and both for Fuzz when stacked. Or metal depending how you set up the parameters. Noise gate recommended for the latter as with all metal pedals. Just a helpful hint from your uncle Al. Besides that, Waza you gonna' do?
Yes, Andy, that is clearly too many DS-1's. But I'm glad you did it. I might just as well spring for the cheaper, newer model for now. If ever I do anything outside of the house jamming in the future, then I'd look into the waz for more power. Plus I could pass the cheap model down to the boy when he gets older. He's 5 months, so we got some time. 😂 Thanks again for this video!
That's too many DS1's! Great video. I've still got my DS1 which l bought in '82. Never given me any problems. Won a Bad Monkey recently which is a great pedal. Love the extra tone controls. And waiting for a JHS Notaklön to be delivered. I think l'll have all bases covered with those three plus a just breaking up tone from my amps. Cheers from the UK!
Not enough DS-1s ! You need to get the 50th Anniversary one too ! I think you can rank them in terms of increasing mids ‘83-40th-DS-1 S mode-DS-1 C mode. Just depends what tone you need, they are all Awesome 👏
That's too many DS-1's ! Tone aside, is there one of these that is considered louder? - Disregarding the Waza custom mode. The DS-1 has been my favorite distortion/overdrive for about 3 1/2 years now but I've always wished it was a bit louder. I always have the level all the way up. I was hoping the they would remedy this with the Waza.
Don't get me wrong: I've got a DS1, too, but had it modified by a company called Tonehunter (no longer in business, too bad). But I still can't bond with this pedal, although I've tried a lot to make it happen: Put it in front of a clean amp (which works the least for me) or in front of a slighly or even heavier distorted amplifier. To my ears it sounds fuzzy when you crank the distortion knob. At the end of the day I prefer the SD 1 used as a booster. Cheers Andy, great video, though.
To be honest, I have never liked the DS-1. Kind of odd, since Nirvana is the reason I picked up a guitar at 12 and started bashing out power chords. Too each their own! Dear sweet Andy, that's too many DS-1s.
Andy, that's too may DS-1s 🙂 I'm happy DS-1w ended so well - this is the one I own. I'm not etirely happy with it so far myself, need to experiment more finding the tone :-)
you're going to have to find yourself a 4 to 8 Channel oscilloscope plug the raw guitar into one channel the clean output of each pedal to their own channel and so on and so forth lmaoo haha gets complicated quick but for a guy with both an addiction to gear and curiosity, might be worth the effort, Also could be a commercial opportunity in that thought.
Andy that’s too many orange pedals! So one thing I noticed: the 83 went through the whole thing using plug in power while all the others were on battery. Makes absolutely no difference in the results other than to poke at my OCD for the duration of the video.
Andy, your brain might say "Andy, that's too many DS-1's" but your heart says no. Imagine, you could have a pedalboard full of DS-1's and play each song with the authentic pedal. The other thing is that you have not disassembled the pedals. It would be such a geek thing to check what Boss has changed during the years. Or you could compare these pedals with the ME-80 effects board, which one is the closest. So many possibilities. (Not mentioning the long waited Citroen DS - Boss DS comparison)
Andy, I differ, I believe that you have enough DS-1s. Not too many. In fact, I think that the question is: Do you have enough SD-1s? I am saving up for the Black Commemorative version of that and looking for a shiny old one to put up against my shiny new SMP model in a test similar to this one. 🎸 Waza!
Andy: That's too many DS-1s! I would get the DS-1W for the two modes, as the custom mode sounds killer. Nothing at all wrong though with the standard DS-1.
I like the 83 V1 model. Which proves sounds and music are subjective which is how it should be! Some good guitar face going on too! Oh and Andy thats too many DS1s

Holy crap, you are insane
Don't know what to say... but... Andy... that's WAY to many DS-1s. Leave some for other players! ;-)
I walked out of a store without the DS-1w, now I want to go back and get it before it's gone.
Andy, that's too many DS-1s.
so lets run all 6 together
I have a 84 cobalt grey hex screw/ehx/philharmonic circuit version. Good luck finding one as I made it up in my head.
🎸 Waza!
Not all first version DS-1's sound the same.. some caps and resistors fluctuate on the vintage models.
I vote the 79. Also nice job recognizing the importance of pot tolerances, I think many people overlook that when it comes to vintage gear.
Andy that's too many DS1s😜
I do like the waza craft. I've been thinking about getting the DS1 for a while.
Just ordered the 2022 ds1. Enjoyed the video and decided to stay with the 2022 instead of the waza. I liked the 2022 better, not sure why.
Mine is my favorite, which would be the '83, but now I must consider the DS-1W. Andy that is to many DS-1's
I woulda bought the cheap one anyways, but now it's justified. Either way Andy, that's too many DS1s.
I got mine in 2021. I like running an SD-1 into it to get the mid fullness. Maybe I should buy the Waza version and save board space? Great video!
I liked the waza custom setting the best. But...Andy, that's too many DS-1s!!!
More DS1 pedals to be had out there, I watched thru to completion. I’ll never be the same. lol…
