      yes! I remember watching this all the time in summer when I would stay up late and try watching this at like 3AM. I think I must have watched this dozens of time as a kid and every time, it felt like a fantastical world only I could see in the night while everyone was sleeping.

    THROUGH THE LOOKING-GLASS has been seriously under represented in film / video adaptations.
    I caught this by accident on television many years ago.
    It really took me by surprise how cleverly it was done and completely true to the book in its spirit.
    (The other good one for me was a 1973 BBC production with a young Sarah Sutton)
    Kate is so beautiful and correctly' Alice' in this!

    Penelope Wilton and Ian Holm as the White Queen and White Knight respectively were always my favorite parts of this film. Love Kate Beckinsale's performance, too. A wonderful actress, as always. For those asking why Alice is an adult: my guess is that Alice's mother is dreaming of being the character in the book since she and her daughter had been reading the story a bit each night. Everyone's probably had a similar experience: watching a series on TV (or Netflix, Hulu, etc.) or reading a book and start dreaming about it as you're viewing or reading.

Great cast : Penelope Wilton, Kate Beckinsale, Greg Wise, etc. Kate really manages to pull off the blonde look despite the fact that she is a brunette. • @CeltycSparrow
      @CeltycSparrow 9 лет назад +12

      Josephine Medina I think part of it is she is in Wonderland - a world of nonsense - and she is also inside her own imagination and so every time she goes through those portals as she passes from square to square she transforms into a new expression of who she is in her imagination until finally she is a queen.

    • @boleyn123
      @boleyn123 9 лет назад +8

      CeltycSparrow The portals represent, quite cleverly, Alice moving from square to square in a chess game. Apparently a chess expert worked out the moves and it all makes perfect good sense in a chess match. Needless to say, Carroll was a great chess player. I see you recognized that; your remarks are very interesting. Methinks a psychiatrist would have a field-day interpreting Alice.

      The difference between the 1998 movie and the 2016 movie is that in the 1998 movie, star Kate Beckinsale was pregnant with her now-17-year-old daughter Lily whilst in the 2016 film, star Anne Hathaway was pregnant with her son Jonathan (or Johnny for short). What a poignant coincidence between the two ATTLG stars!

    I wonder why most of these films have a grown up Alice instead of a child as the original- good as they are...

      You'd be surprised.
      The thing is, too many directors want to turn the story into a symbolic representation of puberty, so they'll hire older girls to play the part.

      That was 1985 if you're talking about Natalie Gregory, and yes, she was amazing. Any child that age who can keep up with Sammy Davis, Jr. in a dance number is a force to be reckoned with!

    Got a test tomorrow. "Through the Looking Glass" is one of the many books included in our syllabus. I wish what we had to write were as simple as this movie. But no, we've gotta deal with how people were living monotonous lives in the Victorian society and crap😵‍💫

    is a very funny and good adaptation of the original novel, respecting certain things the same, precisely for that, this movie is a great work of Projector Productions, and another great movie of Kate Beckinsale, very imaginative and unforgettable, a ideal movie to see it in summer, or during the holidays at the beach, for all family.
