There's something sweet about Del calling John "Johnny" when he's begging for the mouse's life.
Human compassion I guess.
I believe that Del wasn't truly a bad person, he was just disturbed, lost and it led to him been put on death row
@@spartanhuntergaming Did they ever say what his crimes were? I always thought maybe Del had some kind of special needs or like you said some kind of trauma especially since he took a liking to his mouse.
@@littlesongbird1 if I remember correctly, he murdered quite a few people, and tried to burn down the house he committed the murders in, in an attempt to cover his crime. You can look it up online and it can tell you the full story.
A truly deranged person, but still compassionate and thoughtful all the same. Made some awful choices, but still doesn’t take away the humanity and care he had.
@@sharktoof1you say that but the people who had a family member butchered would beg to differ, If you saw your mother, child, son or relative killed in a brutal way you would not be saying “he’s full of compassion”
This film is so poetic. The fact that John Coffey, a super powered, angelic being is presented as a larger-than-life slave made to carry societies burdens. It’s just such a perfect way to put it! This novel/movie couldn’t have been written another way.
This is set during the Great Depression era. Slavery was over by then. Maybe sharecropper
@@BrookeMichaela1 We have no idea how old John Coffey was - he could have been born in the 17th or 18th century, for all we know.
John is supposed to represent Jesus lol
The worst part about this 7:36 is that John isn’t only showing him things from Wharton’s perspective, but also the emotions that were going through him. And knowing what Wharton did to those girls, you can see why the reaction is so strong.

The importance of good rapport with prisoners and guards.. Del immediately tried to call for help when he thought Coffey would hurt Paul.. even though Paul is one of his captors and Del is on death row with nothing to lose. He also has nothing to gain by helping. He'd sit and watch if it was Percy. Another good touch by the writers.

I love Paul's face as he's peeing in relief. I was watching this movie while everybody in my house was sleeping and I could barely stay quiet.
I saw this movie way too young but my parents allowed me to stay because I think deep down they knew I would get something out of it. It was so intense for me and so harsh to view but I’ll never forget it. It makes me so emotional every time I rewatch it. When the mouse got crushed my heart was ripped out of me I couldn’t stop crying. Gosh such a powerful film.
Yeah I watched it when I was about 12 first time
I realize this is an old comment, but just so you know, this movie makes people cry no matter how old they are. I’m 66 and many scenes still tear me up.
Michael Clarke Duncan should have won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor that year....Amazing acting in this movie
Its really touching to see edward screaming for help the moment john grabbed him. He cared for the boss
Going on what a lot of the comments have said, I'm inclined to agree that John Coffee was either an Angel or an 'agent' of god, sent to earth to survey and help where he could. The fact he has the mental capacity of a child actually backs this up.
Children tend to the see the world in an innocent light until corrupted by outside influences. The fact that John is clearly an innocent, yet tortured soul, tells me he has been purposely sent to earth with the strong body of a large man, but the innocent, loving mind of a child. Afterall, no child could fight off a murderer or rapist. On the opposite side to this, adults tend to be less empathetic, sympathetic and kind. Once the world has broken the child out of us, we tend to give up on trying to right the wrongs of the world and come to some form of acceptance of, ''thats just the way it is''. With John never being removed from the child-like thought process, it would be much easier for him to remain a warrior of good. But it also explains why he is so damn messed up. Imagine a child trying to deal with the trauma of paedophiles and murderers - what immense damage that does to a child's psyche. It's hard enough to stomach it as an adult.
Just my thoughts on the matter. :D
And the fact that he could actually "feel" this trauma everyday had to be torturous beyond imagination. Excellent analysis.
@@gsutton78 From all over the world...hmm great story
The beauty of the ambiguous nature of John Coffey is he can be anything you interpret him to be. For some he is an angel, for others he is simply an empath and telepath, I've heard theories he's a time traveller who lost his memory during his travels and others that he is an alien or extra dimensional being who again has lost his memory some how.
It's not really the point of what he is but what he represents.
However if you want to see him as an angel though, that's cool, thats whats meaningful to you and that's what matters.
Through a variety of ancient allegories, the messenger of Truth always comes in the form of a child. Why? Because a child of God hasn't been corrupted at a soul level and still has an attachment to its Divine Creator.
Also, beautifully articulated by you.
No matter how many times I watch this movie it gets me in the feels, hard, every time. Perfect casting, dialogue is just right, just a masterpiece.
I read the book...the casting of everyone was absolutely perfect, especially Duncan and Jeter.
This story is no horror or even a thriller, despite Stephen King’s reputation; it is undeniably a tragedy story, and man can it break a man down.

There used to be a cut up of this movie on RUclips where they made it look like Paul stepped on the mouse and showed him grinning while Del screamed. They edited the guards laughing (from the execution rehearsal scene) after Del bursting into flames on the chair. Then Percy freaking out and pissing himself after that and Paul saying, "What happens on the mile, stays on the Mile", as though threatening him if he tells anyone. It was pretty funny.. Probably got DMCA'd.

How do John’s powers work? Why couldn’t he just heal the two girls he was framed of killing?
He probably tried, but the girls were too far gone. Mr. Jingles wasn't dead as long as the two girls. My guess is that it depends on the time.
he did say he tried, backing up darkpaladin's comment
He did try, in fact that was part of what got him convicted, because he used the term “I tried to take it back” he was trying to take it back (bring them back) when he was found with the 2 dead little girls, they found him wailing and crying loudly saying I tried to take it back
Mr. Jingles had only just died, I think the two girls had been dead for a while when John found them.
