    I once read, about thirty years ago, that the U.S always had a space shuttle ready to go and rescue anyone in space. I don’t know about the validity of this, but it’s nice to know that, maybe, if you’re stuck like this person was, help might be on the way. I’m glad he made it with help from a space shuttle crew.

    • @incubus_the_man
      @incubus_the_man 2 года назад +12

      it couldn't "rescue anyone in space" but they did have a "Launch On Need" (LON) shuttle that could rescue the crew of a shuttle that couldn't return to earth due to damage. This was following the loss of Space Shuttle Columbia. which burned up on re-entry. If damage to the thermal protection system was found to be beyond repair, a (LON) shuttle could be sent as a rescue mission.

      The video is inaccurate, to say the least. Krikalyov stay in Mir with Volkov, TM-13 commander. He was supposed to stay rather than stranded as portrayed here (and popularized by US propaganda at the time). TM-13 was replaced by TM-14 as part of Columbus program (precursor to ISS, initiated by ESA) on March 1992 and both of them returned home safely.
      There's no space shuttle involvement in this particular event. Although he later appointed as 1st cosmonaut to take part in joint USSR-US mission aboard the space shuttle in 1994, and also part of the initial crew that assemble the ISS modules in 1998.
      For context: as an appeasement to secure access to Baikonur in case of USSR dissolution, Aubakirov-1st Kazakh cosmonaut-is assigned as his "replacement" in place of Kaleri, a Latvian veteran cosmonaut (Kaleri would fly later mission, TM-14). Aubakirov is specifically chosen for political purpose, his lack of experience means that he would be disqualified for long term maintenance stay. Ensuring that the only remaining personnel onboard are Russians.

    • @incubus_the_man
      @incubus_the_man 2 года назад +1

      @@bepamungkas I agree, I think they wanted to make it sound more dramatic than it really was. I don't think it was propaganda as much as wanting an interesting headline. He always had a county to come back to, it's just that they couldn't bring him back until some issues were taken care of.

      Russia was in a real mess space-wise in 1991, and even now their space program's having funding issues and technology development has in many ways slowed to a crawl (they have plans for some Mars rover attempt and have built a couple new modules for the space station, but stuff like bigger rockets and other new tech just keep getting delayed). At the current rate, China is going to fly past them in the next several years.

    A few falsehoods in the beginning of this video. The pursuit of Stalinism ended with Stalin's death, and Nikita Khrushchev(leader after) made that very clear when he denounced Stalin and his policies. It stayed that way for the rest of the USSR's existence. And then after you say that even former Soviet citizens looked to a "brighter future" after it collapsed. Complete BS, citizens were absolutely devastated. There was a whole coup in 1991 to try and oust Gorbachev and save the USSR. More than 70% of people across every republic voted in favor of perserving the Soviet Union.

    Why would you say having a space station is needed for interplanetary mission? We have never used a space station to non earth plannet mission. All mission to another planet has been done from earth, to the plannet or orbital body.
    Also he was never in danger he had the escape capsule, and the U.S. was already doing joint mission at that station.
