    Ah man its nice to see someone using old school techniques like filmed wings. most people are just using foam board. I remember watching my dad cover wings and fuselages with iron on film, it really is an art.

    • @bavarian_rc
      @bavarian_rc  Год назад

      I started building planes when I was a teenager (that was back in the 80‘s) and my father taught me all the techniques. After some years of pausing the hobby… must have been around 25 years… I restarted with foamies and foam board but finally went back to good old balsa builds. I still fly my foamies and will probably build some more but it is nothing compared to building balsa.

    • @bavarian_rc
      @bavarian_rc  Год назад +1

      Thanks! I know what you mean, I think the servo installation is a compromise between weight and accessibility. A servo plate screwed to the wing would be nice but adding weight. On the other side I have to admit that I didn't have too many servo failures in all my planes over the last years, and well in case it happened to the Shaka I would have to cut the covering film ... not nice but also not a drama. Finally the design could be easily adapted to make the servo accessible. That's the great thing about balsa kits that you can adapt the design to your personal preferences.

      Hello Peter, also for you and your family all the best wishes. For sure I will share the STL file for the dummy spinner. It fits for the recommended VM spinner with a diameter of 25mm. I was anyway wanting to share but obviously forgot to add the link. So here is the link to the STL file: drive.google.com/file/d/1QZqZRQAg4VYXeTdvgW2D68_Reh3HeI6Q/view?usp=sharing
      I will also add the link to the video description. The Shaka is a really good choice. Since the maiden flight around Christmas I made more than 15 flights with it. The motor has plenty of power and even with a small battery like the 450 mAh 2S you can easily get up to 10 minutes flight time without thermals. The only thing I would do differently now is to take servos that are more precise than the Emax servos I used. Make sure to check out the flight video of the Shaka and my tips & tricks in the second half of the video. They might be helpful.

    • @bavarian_rc
      @bavarian_rc  Год назад +1

      Hi, ich antworte mal auf deutsch. Um so wie ich "auf der grünen Wiese" fliegen zu können gibt es ein paar Voraussetzungen. Am besten ist es einem Modellflugverband beizutreten (z.B. DMFV oder MSFD). Dadurch kommst Du in den Genuss einiger Privilegien, die zusammen mit einem "Kenntnisnachweis" (den kann man als Mitglied online über den jeweiligen Verband machen) die Grundlagen für das Fliegen auf der grünen Wiese darstellen. Selbstverständlich sind die geltenden Regeln (siehe Kenntnisnachweis) einzuhalten. Genaueres kannst Du auf den jeweiligen Verbandsseiten nachlesen. Generell ist der Einstieg ins Modellfliegen ohne Unterstützung von anderen Modellfliegern ein mitunter steiniger Weg. Gerade am Anfang kann dabei viel Frust entstehen wenn man den mühsam gebauten Flieger gleich crashed. Daher würde ich Dir schon empfehlen nach einem Modellflugverein in Deiner Nähe zu suchen und mit denen mal Kontakt aufzunehmen (die gehören dann auch zu einem der oben genannten Verbände). Für die ersten Schritte ist es immer gut im sogenannten Lehrer/Schüler Betrieb zu fliegen. D.h. ein erfahrener Pilot verbindet seine Fernsteuerung mit Deiner und kann sofort die Steuerung übernehmen wenn es brenzlig wird. Die können Dich auch gut beraten welcher Flieger und welche Ausstattung sich gut zum Einstieg eignen. Auch beim Bauen können sie Dir viele Ratschläge geben. So unterstützt wirst Du sehen wir schnell Du Fortschritte machst, so dass Du sehr schnell alleine fliegen kannst. Ich hoffe, das hat Dir schon mal ein wenig weitergeholfen. Bei weiteren Fragen einfach melden. Klingt jetzt alles ein wenig aufwendig, ist aber halb so wild ... und glaub mir, es lohnt sich. Ich könnte mir kein schöneres und vielfältigeres Hobby vorstellen.
      Schöne Grüße aus Bayern!

    Hello again......just wondering the weight and dimensions of the steel bars that are used in the construction? I was thinking of fabricating my own. They look like 1/4" x 2" x 6". Hi Peter, the steel bars are cut from a 1m long bar that I found in my local hardware store. The dimensions are 150mm length, 30mm width and 6mm thickness. Weight is around 215g. After cutting them to length I sanded them to have a smooth surface and then covered the bars with clear coat. The Shaka stickers are optional… I think something like 5$. Ciao Robert,
    I am having great difficulty in obtaining the Graupner Carbon Folding Prop 6x3. It seems to be on back order with most suppliers. Would you know if Graupner has discontinued the production of this size folding prop? Should you know of someone with three of these, please let me know. Thanks and Servus!!!

    • @bavarian_rc
      @bavarian_rc  Год назад

      Hi Peter, the problem with Graupner is that they had issues with their Korean mother company who had changed the distribution model in such a way that the German part of Graupner (which was responsible for all the accessories) was not able to survive. In consequence this lead to insolvency of the German part of Graupner end of 2019. Nowadays Graupner still exists as a brand, but only for transmitters, receivers, servos ... basically the electronics.
      I was quite lucky being able to still find some of the Graupner folding 6x3 (P/N 1336.15.8) folding props. I just checked if I could find some more and found out that in the shop of Stefan Graupner (I think a son of the company founder) has them available. Stefan Graupner is continuosly trying to bring back some of the old Graupner stuff with his own company "SG-Modellbau".
      sg-modellbau.de/products/cam-folding-prop-ersatzblatter-15x8-cm-6x3-zoll
      The only other alternative I have found are the "SUPER Carbon Folding props 1031.6X3". The problem is that they have a 6mm blade root and the Graupner props have a 5mm blade root. If you are using the VM spinner it will require a 5mm blade root. Not sure if it would be ok to reduce the strength of the blade root without weakening the prop too much. That's the one: www.lindinger.at/de/Flugzeuge/Flugzeug-Antriebe-Elektro/Luftschrauben/Klappluftschrauben/SUPER-Carbon-Folding-Ersatzblaetter-6x3-15-8cm-schwarz-2Stk.-Luftschraube-6mm-Blattwurzel/9766663

    Cg of plane 25%?

    • @bavarian_rc
      @bavarian_rc  10 месяцев назад

      Hi, usually the CG for a „standard“ plane is around 25% of the wing cord. But this might vary from plane to plane and sometimes you will have completely different figures. For a flying wing like the Shaka with its forward swept wings the CG is far more in front. So if you want to be on the safe side then check on the internet as there are many online tools for CG calculation. You can enter your wing geometry and basic dimensions of the plane and it will calculate a range for the CG. For the first flight go to the forward edge of the CG range. A nose heavy plane will fly bad but a tail heavy plane will only fly once 😜 I hope this helps. If you have more questions the don’t hesitate to post another comment. By the way for the Shaka the CG ist at about 11%, but mainly due to the forward swept wings

    2:06 do NOT use 'glue'. the design of the wing structure is Abnormal. as a result of the use of CF in the wing, this model has a less-than ideal span-wise distribution of mass (dom); and the auw is increased.
    WOOD should be used used wherever Practical.!!! eg., clear-grained spruce and/or poplar.
    16:53 the use of CF at the leading edge is the opposite of smart. the use of a too-thin profile leading edge is the opposite of smart. the wisdom of using a thin, (nearly) symmetrical profile is absent. googletranslate
