Mozambique’s gas wealth - Insurgents shut down huge energy project | DW Documentary

  • Mozambique could be one of the world’s largest energy suppliers. Huge natural gas reserves are located off the country’s northern coast. But they are not being exploited - because of a brutal insurgency involving Islamist militants.
When giant natural gas fields were discovered off Mozambique’s coast, Western investors came in droves. French company TotalEnergies was among those to secure a lucrative license. In 2019, it pledged to invest 20 billion US dollars by 2024. The first gas deliveries were to begin in 2024.
But the French energy giant later suspended work on the project and withdrew all its workers. Because since 2021, jihadist militants have wielded control over large parts of the northern province of Cabo Delgado. They call themselves Ahlu Sunna Wal Jammah after the main Sunni branch of Islam. More than a million people have fled their homes.
Last year, Mozambique reached an agreement with faraway Rwanda to have its forces provide security for the gas installations and the surrounding villages. A force of 2000 Rwandan soldiers have succeeded in bringing calm to the area. Outside of the provincial capital of Pemba, it’s the only place in Cabo Delgado that’s safe. But whether TotalEnergies will resume the project, and when, remains unclear.

There seems to be haggling over who will supply security services for Total : the mozambiquean armed forces, the Rwandan armed forces, or the various local militias. The Rwandans seem the favourite in this report - they’re moderately francophone and moderately Swahili-speaking (as the locals are) too, and as the government far to the south in Maputo don’t seem to be (according to Wikipedia, where ‘Mozambique’ seems a somewhat fictional nation)

If you consider the context, here is a situation where a few military medics are now responsible to give healthcare to both the army and thousands of internally displaced and local community at the same time. There is no luxury medical care in this situation. No infrastructure, no adequate supply chain and in the middle of a war.

ANADARKO is an american oil/gas company and did operate in this region of mozambique for years alongside other western companies. This company decided to sell every thing and move away completely from mozambique. A few weeks after this event (ANADARKO withdraw) the terrorrism begun in the region adressed above. Funny coincidence... as this same companie belongs to a well know western intelligence agency.
    Peace and love.

Whose is global ( USA or China),regional powers ( Gulf Arabian principalities exporters Gases opposed French, other European countries for gaining less pricing Gases ⛽️ ? ...its proving Islamic terrorist organizations are serving dirty agendas of USA 🇺🇸 and other dirty behavior principalities in Persian Gulf

Thanks for the documentary. It is somewhat good to see the discipline and professionalisme the Rwanda soldiers present themselves with. The Mozabique soldiers do not seem to present their own country by motivation, determanation and professionalism. The ISIS organisation clearly has no true religious motivation here it is pure political and selfisch orientated. Especially these days gaz can a positive effect on this country and its development if it truely desires to so including by the investers. It appears they do not much accept security services which is not enough. There is no focus on development, economical growth, infrastructure improvement, interacting with the local community, training them, improving the economical fundament. Not too strange to see there is a conflict
