HEY THEATRE FRIENDS! I have officially gone stir crazy and roped my lovely mother into yet another one of my insane activities: Attempting to Recap Tony Award winning #Broadway #Musicals in under 2 Minutes. For an added bit of fun, my mom chose all the musicals so I had NO idea which shows I was going to try explaining.

This video was born out of an odd request that I see pretty frequently: explain the plot of [insert title here] musical. Like, literally just be a human wikipedia, save them a google, and just tell them what the show is about. And the WORST PART- is that I do that a lot in real life and i absolutely love it.
I love introducing people to musicals, and because of q*arant*ne I’ve got this constant weird, wired 8th grade sleepover energy. So let’s combine the two (even though I think that’s basically what my entire channel is built on….) & recap musicals in 2 minutes or less. The catch- I don’t know which musicals I’m going to be summarizing. I am terrified. I'm thrilled. Let's get started.

So there’s a group of seven friends living in the 1980s aids epidemic (Angel, Mark, Maureen, roger, Mimi, Joanne, Collins). Collins and Angel fall in love, maureen and Joanne fall in and out of love, Mimi and roger fall in love, and Mark is a single Pringle not so ready to mingle.four of them have aids and angel dies from it in a really, REALLY weird song. Then Mimi dies but she comes back to life because of dead angel. Then they all watch a movie that mark made.

Wicked witch of the west is green so she’s a social outcast, and sent away to boarding school. everyone thinks she’s evil. glinda is rlly pretty and offers to help elphaba (wicked witch of the west) become popular. elphaba learns to love herself and defies gravity and belts a lot and is on a flying broom. dorothy comes along and tries to murder elphaba, luckily, elphaba escapes and is alive.

King Henry of England married six women before passing away, giving birth to the children’s rhyme ‘divorced beheaded died, divorced beheaded survived. They open with the six women singing about how they are only known by their husband. They begin arguing over who had it worse with Henry. We learn about each of the womens stories as each women sings their own song about their tales of woe (and one of the sings two). Finally, they end the show with a song called six, where they talk about what their lives could have been if they had been born in modern times or had a chance at success as single women.
My stupid brain thought this was a list of musicals that lasted only 2 minutes and I was so confused

Okay here’s Pippin:
Pippin wants to do good stuff with his life, so the leading player (his inner conscience) convinces him to go to war with his dad (aka the king) Charlemagne and his half brother Lewis, where Pippin discovers his hatred for killing others. His grandmother (Berthe) tells him to go out and get a wife, and he finds himself in an *interesting* situation with a lot of women. Pippin then finds out his dad has basically been on a massive killing spree and gets MAD, and so Fastrada (Charlemagne’s wife),seeing an opportunity, manipulates Pippin into killing the king, all so her darling son Lewis can move up the line of succession, and so eventually, Pippin kills his dad and becomes the new king. Charlemagne is bought back to life at the start of act 2 as Pippin finds being king too stressful, this being all before Pippin meets a widow called Catherine , and they fall in love. Pippin is angry at himself now living an ordinary life, so the leading player tells Pippin to kill himself because he is ‘extra-ordinary’ and as Pippin refuses, the leading player prays their eyes on Catherine’s son Theo, with the leading player now becoming his inner conscience, starting the loop of the whole story to begin.
That made no sense but hey, the plot of Pippin never made any sense to begin with.
Explaining A Very Potter Musical in under 5 sentences
Basically the story of Harry Potter except it’s a musical. Draco is played by a girl and rolls around on the floor, doesn’t know how to use a toilet, and really wants to go to Pigfarts. Ginny is “racist” and Everyone has a crush on a Zac Efron Poster. Voldemort is in denial about leaving Quirell in prison and Draco and Ron both love hermione. And basically it’s just a bunch of college students putting the most funny but weirdest parody on stage.

QOTD: There’s a family, Diane(Mother), Dan(Father), Natalie(Daughter), Gabe(Son) and they are living their lives. Diana has Bipolar Depression with Manic Episodes and she has been imaging Gabe this whole time because he died when he was an infant. Diana attempts to commit suicide and goes under some electrical therapy treatment thing and loses her memory. Diana gets her memory back and remembers what happened to her son and she leaves the family to live her life while Dan and Natalie do the same. Idk that was long. Btw this was Next to Normal

Jekyll and Hyde (back at it with shameless plug): Henry Jekyll's like "hey I need to do some science work" so he does some experiments on himself and accidentally creates an evil version of himself named Edward Hyde who kills a buncha people and then kills a major character (not saying who!) and then nearly gets married but then stuff goes on and someone dies.

Great comet in a nutshell:
A girl falls for this guy even though he's married and she's engaged. The girl almost got kidnapped by the guy she fell for, but that plan was ruined by the almighty Marya. Then there's a comet that old man Peirre sees. The end.
(And remember kids, Balaga's just for fun!)
Ghost Quartet oh boy this is gonna be impossible: Pearl and Rose are connected across lifetimes. Rose asks a Bear to murder Pearl because Pearl started going out with the Astronomer, a man Rose used to love (who also betrayed Rose.) In return, the Bear asks for "one pot of honey, one piece of stardust, one secret baptism, and a photo of a ghost," and Rose attempts to collect these items as many different people throughout many lives. By the "end" (whatever that means for a story that is continuously moving in circles) it turns out the bear just wanted the honey and has no intention of killing anyone, and Pearl dies in various ways in different timelines, including sometimes at Rose's hand, and sometimes because of the actions of "The Pusher" who is a human and an alternate life version of the Bear. Versions of the Astronomer and Rose plan to have kids, two sisters, who very well might be the original Pearl and Rose, restarting the cycle.
Some run on sentences there and quite possibly incomprehensible (Ghost Quartet is pretty incomprehensible even with many paragraphs) but I tried
I like the inclusion of Balaga despite the sentence limit! Fits with the spirit of the show
Wizard of Oz: a girl kills someone then teams up with three other people to kill someone else.
Be more chill: The loser of the school, Jeremy, has a huge crush on this girl everyone likes, Christine, so signs up for the school play with her. He then, finds out about a pill, from this guy named Rich, that helps him become popular. So Jeremy takes the pill and leaves behind his other loser friend, Michal, to attract Christine. Rich goes crazy because of the pill, which leads Jeremy to figure out the pill is trying to take over the world. Finally, Michal comes in and saves the day, because he never gave up on Jeremy (and we stan Michal), and Christine agrees to go on a date with Jeremy.

There was an ambitious boy, who grew into a man. He fought in a war, helped start a country, married a Schuyler, had babies. He then proceeded to cheat on his wife,watch his son die, move uptown and die in a duel with his archenemy. The end.

usnavi lives in a ghetto like neighborhood called washington heights with a bunch of other people who speak spanish. he owns a store with his cousin and there’s a girl named nina who couldn’t stay at stanford because she didn’t have money. usnavi likes a girl named vanessa and benny who is usnavis friend likes nina. there’s a blackout, abuela wins the lotto but dies so usnavi uses the money to go to the DR where is parents lived before they died. he ends up staying and he gets vanessa and they all live happily ever after

Henry VIII wives are a girl band who are comparing their lives to decide who will be the band leader. Honestly the easiest one.
Heathers: There are three hot girls that take another hot girl under their wings. Hot girl = veronica meets hot guy who has family issues. Veronica and hot guy kill one of the three hot girls and write a suicide note so they don't get blamed. Then two football jerks are jerky so Veronica and hot guy shoot them and leave another suicide note. Then hot guy is all like "blow up the school" Veronica is like "no!" and so hot guy blows himself up and veronica makes up with her friend that I should have mentioned earlier.
That went horribly.
The hot guy is also a slurped addict

IN THE HEIGHTS RECAP: (Spoilers) Everyone has dreams, Nina made it out but dropped out of the college she finally got to, and feels bad. Benny likes Nina, Usnavi likes Vanessa, Usnavi gets a date with Vanessa and they go to a club where the power goes out. It's summer so they are sweating and have not power, Abuela Claudia wins the lotto during this and gives 1/3 to Usnavi, 1/3 to Sonny, and 1/3 to herself. She dies, everyone is sad, Usnavi and Vanessa try to move away but then realize that Washington Heights is their home, show ends.

Bandstand: WWII Veteran gets together a band of fellow veterans to enter a competition. He also recruits the wife of his best friend who died during the war. The band has to fight through a lot of personal battles after coming home and they learn how to get through it together. They end up famous the end.

I do this to my non-theater friends when I make a musical reference I can't count how many times I've had to explain the plot if Heathers when I say "how very" or "lick it up baby lick it up" or anything from Heathers (if you can't tell it's my favorite musical my dream role is Heather McNamara)
That was so so funny ! I'd love to see a part 2 ! As for describing a musical:
Some guy named Princeton move in a apartment on Avenue Q (Every thing else was out of his price range so far). He gets sorta involved with Kate Monster but sleeps with a girl whose last name is literally "The Sl*t" and Kate is very sad. She wants to open a school for monsters and Princeton tries to get her to forgive him by collecting money for her to do so. An other Monster named Trekky, who is addicted to p*rn, gives him money for her. At the end, everyone is happy and Princeton decides to write a Musical about what happened.
QOTD: The Last Five Years Edition:
Story of two people and their journey from their first date to their divorce. Cathy is a struggling actress who every summer goes back to Ohio where she actually gets roles, and Jamie is a writer on the rise. Jamie tells the story is chronological order as Cathy tells it in reverse. There is virtually no dialogue, and the only time they sing together is when their stories overlap in the middle at their wedding.
Me: *Skips ahead 10 seconds on accident*
Kathrine: EVERYONE DIES!
Hadestown:
1. A young man named Orpheus works for Hermes, one day he meets a hungry young girl named Eurydice, and they fall in love.
2. Orpheus is a musician and is writing a song to make spring come again because Hades is forcing his wife Persephone, the goddess of flowers, to spend less than half a year on earth.
3. Hades comes to get Persephone, and in the process he meets Eurydice and convinces her to sign a contract to spend the rest of eternity in Hadestown.
4. Orpheus finds out, and with the help of Hermes, he journeys down to Hadestown for Eurydice.
5. Hades is reminded of the flame he once held for Persephone and decides to make Orpheus a deal, he can go make with Eurydice, however he must walk in front and Eurydice must follow, and if he looks back, Eurydice must go back to Hadestown.
I was in the Music Man back in September. I can confirm that that was an accurate synopsis.

There’s a guy named Paul in a town called Hatchet field, one night a meteor hits the towns theatre during the night. This causes all of hatchet field, Paul’s colleagues and barista crush (played by the amazing Lauren Lopez) to only be able to communicate through singing if infected, the entire town turns into a musical. Paul and his friends run away from the people singing, slowly getting picked off, one by one until it’s just Paul and Emma, his barista crush. Paul must go and try and save the town, refusing to sing as he hates musicals but is (possibly?) infected, sacrificing himself to save the town. Emma is the only surviver but then Paul appears, singing, OH NO-

First Card Kat gets: The Music Man!
My summary: Harold Hill is a salesman and wants to sell a band to this small town in Iowa. Except he plans to leave the town after he takes everyone's money. Hill goes to the town and meets Marion the librarian who is a stuck-up piano teacher. Winthrop has a lisp and doesn't like to talk to people. Hill tells the town about how a band will get rid of all the trouble in River City that is being caused by the pool table. The people buy instruments and Hill falls in love with Marion. The instruments come and everyone is happy, but Hill doesn't know anything about music so he doesn't teach the kids how to actually play them. Marcellus sings Shipoopi. Charlie Cowell comes to town to try to stop Hill and Hill tries to run from him. The kids never really learn how to play the instruments, but they try and the town thinks they sound amazing. Hill doesn't end up leaving River City, but stays with Marion.

puerto rican store clerk has a crush on a hot girl and his cousin gets him a date with her. this other girl has to come home cause college is too expensive👎, her dad sells the business so she can pay for college and both her and his wife are muy mad. that same night, clerk boy and hot girl go out and college girl and dispatch boy make up, also a blackout happens😧. store clerk leaves the girl to check on his abulela who tells him she won the lottery and they can go to dr together (yay!!!!!). she dies (boooo), hot girl asks him to still stay tho so lol he does.

Eliana S, one is Six! 2. Is Something Rotten, and 3. Is Wonderland. Not many people have heard of Wonderland because it was only on broadway for a month and it was a big flop. The music is really good in my opinion but the overall production wasn’t the best. I definitely recommend listening to it though!

Anastasia: A girl joins two conmen to go to paris to find her past and family, but once she eventually gets there, she falls in love with Derek Klena(one of the conmen), and doesn’t go with her family.
