I absolutely agree about the open concepts! So glad to see people pushing back on the idea that walls are evil and must be torn down. I used to love watching HGTV, but every designer on there did the same thing and it all started by tearing down all the walls and leaving the poor people with one cavernous space. No privacy, no closets, no lamps by sofas and chairs ( because sofas and chairs were floating in the cavernous space like castaways). And for me, it was just a big NO. I like walls and halls and cozy spaces.
Big HUGS to Bella!!! 💕💜🥰 YOU CAN BEAT THIS, Bella!! My mother was a cancer survivor of 20 years before covid took her in 2020. She (unexpectedly) got pregnant with my little sister a year after chemo, and things went awesome. Bella, when this tough period is over, I promise you that you'll be a whole new person with renewed outlook, new purpose, and you will be stronger!! You'll know *you can take on ANYTHING, and it won't break you.* 😌. Much love and good vibes, love!! 🥰💜💕
As to the open space kitchen/ dining room I completely agree with you. What about the smell of cooked food, especially of fried food? It stucks on fabric and curtains😮😮😮
I’ve never been a big fan of accent walls, but something I did in the master bedroom was paint the back wall behind the bed a shade darker (the next one on the paint chip). It’s subtle, but does something interesting to all the light that comes in from the windows. Sending healing thoughts, Bella. I’m 4 years out from surgeries and chemo for breast cancer, so I know well how rough a road battling a serious illness is. I wish you strength and a return to good health for you! ❤️
Sending you healing prayers Bella!🥰 I'm so excited for the new year. Husband and I are almost a year into our new home and we are really starting to look at new furniture and talk aesthetic and style. These videos help me introduce him to interior design. Thanks Garrett for talking about what is out and what is in. Sending you all the love as we head into 2023.✨🥂🍾✨
Sending all good vibes your way, Bella. Words are flowing out like endless rain into a paper cup. They slither wildly as they slip away across the universe…
Garrett, You are the BEST! You are the only designer that recognizes all of our styles and allows us to incorporate our memories and contemporary and antique heirlooms and teaches us to grow our own style. You have validated what I have brought into my home, I want a contemporary feel and still have my old hippie vibe, my mom's French with aunt anne's gorgeous hand carved heavy dark wood antiques. Hey, and cranberry velvet too! A big mix that has come together cohesively because of YOU! It is what I love and can afford and brings a sense of warmth and comfort. Thank you Garrett! Happy 2023!
I know it’s been going out for a while, but I am so tired of gray everything. I don’t mind touches of gray hair in there. But the total gray rooms from floor to ceiling. That’s a bit much and stayed for too long.
A speedy recovery for Bella! ❤ Sofas need to be low maintenance, and I can imagine that people are over the down sofas. I think the best middle ground is a sofa with a down wrapped foam core. I had one for years, and thought I would like to try something firmer. Enter my current sofa; and with it a polyester wrapped foam core. Oh boy, do I regret that purchase. The seat cushions are okay, but the ones in the back are just really uncomfortable. Never again.
Love and recovery wishes for Bella. As for trends disappearing...I love my open space home but can only imagine the annoyance of someone clanging pots in the kitchen while I'm relaxing in the living room. And I really wish there was an entryway as the front door opens right into the kitchen! Great if you're solo and don't like to entertain but for anyone else...beware. thanks for another great video.
Hey, Bella, I have been battling a chronic illness for nearly 13 years now, and the best thing I can say is YOU GOT THIS! It is in zero way easy! I really hope you get on your way to feeling well!
Instead of a fake tree for a dimly-lit room I highly recommend a cast iron plant (Aspidistra elatior). They can be found in the southern US for peanuts as an outdoor plant, but can be pricey when sold as a house plant. It's worth it because they require very little light. Victorians loved using them in dark sitting rooms. Impossible to kill unless you over water it. More plants that are genuinely easy care (I've forgotten to water them for up to a month in low light): snake plant (Dracaena trifasciata), grape ivy (Cissus rhombifolia), ZZ plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia), devil's ivy (pothos). As for open concept designs: ironically I think it works best in a large space? I live in a modest home with a 10 x 10' kitchen, 10 x 10' dining room, and 13 x 15' living room. We opened up the dining room to the kitchen but kept the wall separating them from the living room. I've visited homes where they tore all the walls down, and it feels like a tiny condo with nothing to define the space.
Just discovered your channel and I am OBSESSED! I have been binge watching you all day (as I paint my dining room a deep, smoky charcoal grey/black 🖤) I am currently remodeling our 1856 cottage style home we just purchased and am LOVING IT! My personal style can be described as a moody, rustic luxury. Rich wood tones and natural materials, dark accents (and sometimes walls 🖤) with pops of Metallics and lots of mixed metals. I’ve always been told I have a crazy eye for interior design so I am very curious to see what you would think of my space in the future. Much love from Iowa, just a small town girl living in a dreamy, luxurious world 🖤🤍
Yay! I’m glad you are enjoying Amanda. Welcome to the channel. It’s great to have you as part of our very valued subscriber family! I always recommend turning the bell notifications on so you know when I post a video like tomorrow, Thursday at 12pm noon PST. Happy New Year! 😊😊😊
I agree that the all white, while simple, was not very interesting for many of us. And I love the way you layer colors that pop with neutrals. Also appreciate your kindness is sending out good wishes to Bella. It's part of what makes your channel special as well as informative and fun. Keep up the videos. We love them!
First of all, I wish Bella in particular all the best and everyone here a good happy 2023. One of the reasons I like your channel is that you stand up for sustainability and your ideas and advice always keep that in mind. I've never liked open spaces for exactly the reasons you name: Apart from the fact that the kitchen should primarily impress with its function, which includes good taste, I want to close the door behind me when the work is done. . Also, I live in an old house and I like that the rooms are a little different, as are the demands on them. Our moods and needs are not trimmed to line either. I've never liked artificial plants, so I don't regret this trend anyway. While I don't have an accent wall, I think they make perfect sense in one way or another. I hope more and more people think about sustainability. I collect Biedermeier furniture. A few years ago they were outrageously expensive, but now the price has plummeted in favor of overpriced midcentury furniture. The quality of Biedermeier furniture is great and although I'm cautious about trends, that suits me very well. Greetings from Germany
Happy New Year, Garrett!!! And thank you for asking for prayers for Bella. Bella, I'm sending healing prayers and wishes that 2023 brings you hope, better health, and peace! Thank you for letting us know these trends are on the way out, Garrett! I'm glad to see things like the completely open floor plans and all white rooms and kitchens moving on. I love your suggestions to elevate things like open shelves and furniture pieces to stay current, and I also love your boucle sofa, so I'm glad you have thoughts to keep it and accent it with other current items. Thank you for all the great information in 2022, and I can't wait to see what you have in store for the LeChic fam in 2023!!! 🤗🥰🤗 Colleen
My kids tell me I have a lamp addiction! Lol I love an interesting lamp and I do change them out depending on my mood for the room! Many Florida homes have very few overhead lights! Have no idea why, but so many amazing lamps in thrifts stores here because of it! I have been restricted to every time I buy a new one I have to get rid of one lol I may or may not have a lamp closet…
Speedy recovery, Bella! So sorry you are suffering 😞. My son and husband are also suffering serious illness. I will add you to my prayers 🙏 and ask my church to add you too! Good health coming...! 💕🤗
Bless you, Bella! I hope you have a team of helpful people around you who will respect and support the decisions you make to create your own recovery. You are worth whatever it takes. My friend had a pretty scary breast cancer diagnosis. She had been working, had two teenagers and a husband. After a couple of weeks she felt she could not get enough rest at home. She rented an apartment close to her house and spent most of her time in her apartment. She went to see her family after school and went back to her apartment for the night. Some evenings she ate with her family, sometimes not. Sometimes she helped cook, sometimes not. She took leave from her job. She lived.
Garrett, I recently found you on RUclips, and have loved your videos. You won me over to subscribe to your channel when you gave that heartfelt message about Bella. You are such a kind person to wish her a speedy recovery. We need more people like you in this world. Love you!
Happy to see open-concept depart. You are so right about needing some definition of space and a little privacy. It feels cozier to me having actual rooms. Thanks for your insights as always! You are the best!
My old house had an opening to the kitchen right after coming in the front door. I hated that, so I closed it by putting up a wall, and added more cupboards in the kitchen on the other side.
What I noticed with any design trend is once TOO MANY people start doing it, no one wants to do it anymore. We just built a new home a little over a year ago and when it came to finishes and kitchen design I asked our designer “what has everyone been doing the past few years?” Once she told me, we went a total other way. She even agreed that once you notice the same things on back order and the market saturated with a certain “look”, it’s on its way out soon.
A big theme of this channel is not to follow a trend just because someone else does. If someone loves a trend and thinks they can embrace it for quite a while that’s fine. It’s great to take inspiration from from trends that speak to our tastes and make them our own. A person’s home should reflect who they are, their personality and what makes them happy. I try to stress that regularly in our videos. 😊😊😊
Bella, when you go to sleep each night, picture all the love and good energy of Garrett and this family surrounding you as a healing light. Go to sleep with a smile on your face.... and wake up being grateful for all the people who care about you. Garrett! Yes, yes and OMG YES to mid-century modern going to the trash heap of early ugly! I agree about the open concept. We do a lot of entertaining, and I would not want my kitchen to be in the same room as my living room. Also, if you're trying tovread, listening to music, the clatter from the kitchen would make me crazy. We're planning on moving in the next couple of years, and all the new construction homes ore open concept design. I told my husband that we'll probably have to get a builder to get what we want.
Thanks for sharing!! I appreciate it. Please take a moment to support the channel if you haven't already, and join our very valued subscriber family. :)
🙏 to Bella, positive affirmations coming your way. Can't wait for the all gray to go out, I love the warm tones and natural beauty of wood. Hoping it makes a come back soon!
A black ficus elastica is my favorite indoor tree! They do need light, but they are the toughest and grow in size well. They are so sculptural and interesting!
Bella, I see you as a healthy, happy and vibrant person. I see all illness leave your body and from now there is no other truth. It cannot be any other way. Stand up and walk, believe and it is. Xx
I still love my white walls - but I don’t like all white. I have a medium dark floor, wood trims, and a mix of wood and colorful furniture and rugs. White walls just show off everything else so well and also bounce light around (I live in a condo with only one exterior wall so want as much light to bounce from the few windows I have.
To Bella, best and warmest wishes for a swift and complete recovery, plus strength and good energy to help you through it, all the way from Austria 🇦🇹 How wonderful to be able to partake in sending you positive vibes! Thank you for letting us know, Garrett 💝 How fortunate to hear about these trends being on the way out. Good riddance especially to fake trees! Greetings from Austria 🇦🇹 to all
Well I would not say it’s leaving completely, but it’s certainly nice to see the modified open concept option which I much prefer. There are still people that like a very open concept and I respect that. It just wouldn’t work for our lifestyle and design objectives. 😊😊😊
May lots of healing Angels surround you Bella! Hugs to you and be strong and know you have lots of prayers & support. Thanks Garrett for your kind heart... Love that for all of us! 💖 Tremendous Blessings to everyone for 2023!!!
Late to the video. Best wishes for a speedy recovery, Bella. Don't forget that strength and healing also comes from the mind, so try to stay in that positive mindset and envision yourself healed and well.
Sending you thoughts and healing prayers Bella. A positive attitude is one of the most healing power there is. So stay positive even on the hard days. You are blessed.
Hang on Bella, a whole community is rooting for you, everything will be alright 🫶

Aye, and the cost of heating those huge rooms in winter!
The thing I dislike about mimalism as depicted, is that it tends to be so bland. My house is fairly minimal but there is color and texture.
I live in apartment from 1951. The tile is also from 1951. I put in just a few pops of Mamie pink, Warhol Sam cats, just a few, for fun minimilism.

You got this, Bella! As for trends I'm glad to see go away: I can't believe fake plants ever even made it as a trend, they are hideous.
As to the open space kitchen/ dining room I completely agree with you. What about the smell of cooked food, especially of fried food? It stucks on fabric and curtains😮😮😮
Sending love and healing for Bella and everyone else in this family we have formed here who has unspoken needs.

Sending hugs and prayers for Bella. You have many, many people pulling for you!
I’m glad you are being realistic about down. It’s stems from a cruel practice. With so many alternatives, there’s no reason for people to covet down.
👍👍👍
Sending positive healing energy to Bella! ✨
Bella, healing prayers sent for your speedy and full recovery!

Happy New Year Page!🎉🎉🎉
IMO down should be reserved for spaces where the frumpiness comes off as lived in and cozy instead of disheveled, so usually an old house with plenty of antiques, natural surfaces and generally rustic design, but still modern counterpoints. Too often it gets thrown into a modern space or mcmansion and just comes off a messy against all of the clean lines and surfaces.
Hang in there Bella.
You Can Do This! 👍🏼
We are with you, Bella. 💕🙏🏼
I agree about the open concept. We do a lot of entertaining, and I would not want my kitchen to be in the same room as my living room. Also, if you're trying tovread, listening to music, the clatter from the kitchen would make me crazy. Can't wait for the all gray to go out, I love the warm tones and natural beauty of wood. Hoping it makes a come back soon!
A black ficus elastica is my favorite indoor tree! They do need light, but they are the toughest and grow in size well. They are so sculptural and interesting!

I hope Bella, that you feel better soon and have a amazing 2023, with good health mentally and physically. 😊
I am so happy to hear that the open concept is leaving. Walls are the lingerie of the home-leave a little something to the imagination
Well I would not say it’s leaving completely, but it’s certainly nice to see the modified open concept option which I much prefer. There are still people that like a very open concept and I respect that. It just wouldn’t work for our lifestyle and design objectives. 😊😊😊
Best Wishes Bella for overcoming your health challenge in 2023!
Hugs and prayers to Bella!
