  • Solvang is a fantastic city for a weekend trip from Los Angeles. Their Julefest celebration runs through the month of December and culminates in a Christmas Tree burn in the first week of January. The trees are brought from all over the Santa Ines Valley and fireman provide a fire demonstration before the tree burning. I took the opportunity to visit the city and spend a half day exploring everything from the Viking Museum to an Aebleskiver taste test. I hope you enjoy this fun adventure to Solvang.

I was born in the Santa Ynez Valley back in 1968 & lived in Solvang until I was 11. I just loved it out there. Solvang looks a lot like it did back when I was young. Even the red clog in front of the shoe store has been there since I was a kid. It’s a beautiful place & I love going back.

Solvang has a special place in my heart as it is one of the locations I over walked my young beautiful pregnant wife after misinterpreting our doctors orders but hey our son was born early but healthy as can be. I will always love you Solvang❤️

Come back up in spring when the hills are as green as Ireland...! Glad you had a good time in our town, there is a lot more to Solvang than aebleskeevers and the downtown "Danish" area... Lots of wineries between Solvang and Los Olivos (next town over) as well as some brewhouses and tap rooms. If your into bicycle riding, some of the best in California in the Santa Ynez Valley... Thanks for coming!

Great Video Josh, (big fan of the channel) we visited Solvang in 2018 as part of our road trip, we went into the Christmas Shop to buy gifts, I was mistaken by the lady in the shop as an Australian Firefighter, who were fighting the forest fires, she was disappointed when I told her I was in fact a Fork Lift Driver from the UK 🇬🇧 keep up the videos as my wife and I really want to come back to California. Russ from the UK

Perfect pronunciation of both Solvang and Aebleskivers. Thanks for caring enough to get pronunciations correct in your vids. Grew up going there since the 60s living in the Santa Barbara area. Been going for decades. Excellent town where a couple of childhood friends still live/work. ❤

We were just there on Jan 2 and noticed that a lot of the stores had old, dry Christmas trees setting outside. It looked like they were out there waiting to be picked up. Now we know why! It was so crowded, but we had some good food, including aebleskivers and brought home a bunch of yummy treats.

Solvang is only 2 1/2 hours from downtown Los Angeles yet so many have not visited our beautiful northern coastline. I invite all to visit beautiful Solvang which can be done in one day. Also many wineries close by and Chumash Casino in the back end of town.

Love Solvang and the central coast, grew up in Santa Barbara in the 80's.
On a side note, I'm surprised they allow the Tree bonfire considering the fire dangers in California. They'd probably be better as compost or some areas put them in their lakes.

The æbleskiver we usually eat in Denmark aren’t anywhere near as dense as those first ones :) and even a bit smaller! Much more like the second ones you tried! Plus, the typical way to serve them, at least what I’ve grown up with, is with jam, either strawberry or raspberry, and powdered sugar on the SIDE. So you dip it to your liking :)
But honestly, this way of serving it looks yummy too! Apart from how dense they look, imo

My fav place to get aebleskivers is my kitchen. I found an aebleskiver cast iron pan at a thrift store in Ventura years ago. They are so easy to make and you can make them fresh and whatever flavor you want. I pour the batter and place one blueberry in each one so those it’s not traditional. It’s amazing. The Xmas burning is not an event I’ve ever attended but I grew up in WA where so many Xmas trees are grown and we used to beat back the forest behind our house and burn the wood we gleaned to bbq our dinner. Those young and dry boughs burn like they are covered in gasoline. Usually most of those trees are fir. They burn so hot. But the ember would def light the hardwood so we’d have good coals to make dinner later. So def if you have a Xmas tree in the house, make sure it is never in danger of getting lit up by a hot wire or spark from an outlet or frayed lights. I love solvang. It’s a lot of fun. I’ve never been to that danish museum yet. I will have to check it out.

My siblings and our spouses often go to Solvang. We have spoken to the owners of Nielsen's Market, and I believe it's still family owned. It's a great base for wine tasting. Usually drive there after work on a Wednesday and spend Thursday and Friday doing the winery tours (limousines required! Or a few non-drinking spouses). It's best without the crowds. Some awesome restaurants in the area. Next best thing other than actually going to Denmark, but it's no Tivoli Gardens.

It's north of Point Conception, which is generally considered the dividing line for SoCal. I generally like to ask the locals what they consider themselves. I imagine in Solvang they consider it Central California. It's only about 45 minutes to the San Luis Obispo County line.
