My son and his wife live in Taiwan and returned there in late April (they had moved back to Canada, but when the pandemic hit, there were no jobs or opportunities to be found here). Upon return, they had to isolate for 2 weeks, followed by 1 week of extreme social distancing. My son received regular visits from the police, and on one occasion the officer brought him a bubble tea! I have the greatest admiration and respect for the Taiwanese government and people. We could learn a lot from them.

I actually had to look up what "bubble tea" was, thank you for giving me a bit of culture there! (It makes my little cup of tea rather boring.) 😜😉😁

I should add that at one point, my son who suffers with severe allergies, developed symptoms. As they had to report all symptoms to the authorities, he was told to report for testing. Testing was done outside of the hospital and it was probably 35 degrees Celsius at the time. The nurse came out in full-on PPE to swab him. When that was finished another nurse (or maybe DI tech?) emerged from the hospital with an x-ray machine and performed a chest x-ray... under normal circumstances I might have considered this overkill... but the proof is in the pudding...

I lived there on three separate occasions for work (research at universities) and am a fluent speaker/reader of Mandarin. It's an absolutely beautiful country and well worth the trip. Among the most open, vibrant democratic societies in the world with a little something for everyone's taste. Generally an easy place to travel if you only have English (though I've found many Taiwanese also speak French, Japanese, and German).

I live in south of Taiwan
And I agree there was no significant impact, also the app mentioned is something like whatsApp not a tracing app. The could also just have called his phone number, but it's cheaper this way I guess
Taiwanese took it very serious from the beginning. Mask wearing increased. Masks where rationed (production was increased dramatically, supported by the military), same goes for high volume alcohol
I agree on the health system. It puts most if not all others to shame. It's cheap, it's efficient
The other day/midnight. My soon fell and he was hurt this was a few minutes before midnight. Going to the hospital, with initial diagnosis, a x-ray, and some minor treatment, I was back home before 1am
Entering any health facility requires quite a substantial procedure at the moment. Thermal camera, hand sanitizer, check your health card (also contains your travel history (was implemented because of sars1), temperature check, questions to identify covid patience

The UK government has been absolutely useless, they didn't learn from any other country. Their reaction was slow and inadequate. It's depressing how badly our government is still doing. They have a lot to answer for. A great many lives have been lost here in the UK that needn't have been if we'd taken advice from countries like Taiwan.

The U.K. government stated they have world class scientists and experts working for the government so they know it better than any other advanced countries. They are still debating to find evidence in the use of masks being highly effective or not when the rest of the world have shown scientific evidence and data well before Covid outbreak. Great to see the true colours of leaders and politicians in how much they truly care. Sad to see people blindingly following the wrong people in the government uniting people through spreading hatred.

I know Taiwan are very serious about masks and PPE, they stockpiled a massive amount and restricted the number of masks people could take out of the country for example. It would not have been impossible for the UK government to increase production of masks and encourage use. What I find frustrating is that while it would have been impossible for us to fully replicate what taiwan did our government could have at least adopted weaker versions of the same tactics they used.

Besides the study from Indonesia you kindly told us about Dr Campbell, showing that people with blood levels of Vitamin D 30ng/ml, I've now seen one from Ireland saying the same thing, and that Covid-19 is typically mild if you have sufficient Vitamin D.
I think to myself - our UK excess deaths are now 65,000 but if everyone had been given e.g. 4,000 IUs per day of Vitamin D the number could have been 1/10th at 6,500 !!!
So 58,500 people have died unnecessarily because of this Vitamin D blind spot. THIS IS CRIMINAL !!!

From what I learnt this far from you, doctor, I am correct to write that coronavirus cannot move, that people move the virus. Therefore the outcomes are the abilities and honesty of the people dealing with the virus.
The Taiwanese have surely proven that they are able, disciplined and honest.
Over the 40 years, whenever there was a boom in Canada, our firm would go to Britain and hire an airplane load of technicians and engineers. These blokes turned out to be great designers and project leaders, as well great soccer players and ballroom dancers.

I am Taiwanese American and have so much respect for the TW government and the people who have done so well dealing with the pandemic. Govt officials started checking everyone for temperature (before disembarking) and symptoms for every single flight coming in to Taiwan since 12/31/2019, and people coming in are tracked by a govt issued phone (GPS) and are checked daily on the phone regarding their health by county/local officials.
Because of the low number of those affected, every person tested positive is put in negative pressure isolation hospital room and the govt was able to get a team of entrepreneurs together to start 60 production lines for facial masks. They flew to Germany to buy the most crucial machine for the production lines in January and within weeks, Taiwan was producing 10-15 million face masks daily. The govt also temporarily halted exporting of masks to ensure everyone is protected domestically.
Everyone also is so good at wearing a mask. My parents are in the 70s and have been living normally - going to Costco, exercising in the park etc.
And regarding such low mortality - Harvard started a research team looking into the possible connection of BCG vaccine (which is mandatory) and low mortality in certain countries, and the Taiwanese govt is also working on a vaccine that combines BCG and Covid19.

John, there is more to it then that, Chinese citizens flying from mainland China to Taiwan need a permission from Chinese government even if that's just for a transit. Also China stopped issuing visas for mainlanders to travel to Taiwan in August 2019. This was due to cross-strait tensions with the Taiwan's Democratic Party which favors a formal declaration of independence from China, was reelected as president of Taiwan in January. I believe the restrictions was still in place in December....

Very interesting video. And, Craig, I am so glad I am not the only one who keeps trying to scroll the screen up during John's discussion. Awful time here in the US--I look forward to these daily distractions, particularly one like this. I had very minor symptoms a month ago and could not get tested. My doc does want me to have the antibody test but says 'we'll wait until they have their act together on that one'.

Another thing to add why Taiwan could do it was simply we have been excluded from the WHO and the UN. We get no information and no help from the WHO and China. When we are so isolated politically and internationally, the Taiwanese learned to rely on themselves.

Title: A cohort study to evaluate the effect of combination Vitamin D, Magnesium and Vitamin B12 (DMB) on progression to severe outcome in older COVID-19 patients.
    Conclusions:
DMB combination in older COVID-19 patients was associated with a significant reduction in proportion of patients with clinical deterioration requiring oxygen support and/or intensive care support. This study supports further larger randomized control trials to ascertain the full benefit of DMB in ameliorating COVID-19 severity.
Results: Between 15 January and 15 April 2020, 43 consecutive COVID-19 patients aged ≥50 were identified. 17 patients received DMB and 26 patients did not. Baseline demographic characteristics between the two groups were similar. Significantly fewer DMB patients than controls required initiation of oxygen therapy subsequently throughout their hospitalization (17.6% vs 61.5%, P=0.006). DMB exposure was associated with odds ratios of 0.13 (95% CI: 0.03 - 0.59) and 0.15 (95% CI: 0.03 - 0.93) for oxygen therapy need and/or intensive care support on univariate and multivariate analyses respectively.

Did a quick search and found some relevant data on magnesium that's worth highlighting.
*Title - Why You Can't Skip Magnesium If You're Taking Vitamin D*
      www.livescience.com/61866-magnesium-vitamin-d.html
So the cohort study was using this dosage and regimen -> Patients were administered oral vitamin D3 1000 IU OD, magnesium 150mg OD and vitamin B12 500mcg OD (DMB) upon admission if they did not require oxygen therapy.
The livescience article have helpfully included those foods that are high in magnesium. "Foods high in magnesium include almonds, bananas, beans, broccoli, brown rice, cashews, egg yolk, fish oil, flaxseed, green vegetables, milk, mushrooms, other nuts, oatmeal, pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds, soybeans, sunflower seeds, sweet corn, tofu and whole grains, according to the review." But, as usual, if you aren't getting enough from those day to day then a supplement may indeed be prudent. 150mg seems fine since that's what the study went with. The RDA is 350mg for adults.

99 percent of the 380 Indonesians who died of COVID-19 had low vitamin D - May 2020
      COVID-19 Death vs Vitamin D VDW11788
Covid-19: More deaths? More lockdown? More suffering?
Vitamin D deficiency causes a 10 times higher death rate in Covid-19 patients according to recent studies.
What we can do to get the Covid-19 pandemic under control and avoid another lockdown
Lorenz Borsche / Dr. Bernd Glauner
PDF extracted to this page - from authors in Germany
Extraction of tables wad poor - please see PDF
Original Indonesia preprint Does vitamin D (and C) help with Covid-19 - May 2020
      Introduction
The authors see sufficient scientific plausibility that with a good vitamin D level many corona deaths could still be alive today. The studies listed wrt the course of the disease and the death rate in Covid-19 infections dependant on vitamin D level are evident, among others a study with 780 participants. That may be a factor of 12 smaller than a placebo-controlled double-blind study with 10,000 participants. The study is still significant because it shows that infections in groups with deficient vitamin D levels are 10 times more likely to end in death. With a vitamin D supplementation to levels known from nature (East Africa: Massai/Hadza, Central Africa: wild chimpanzees) of 45 ng/ml, there is a good chance that Covid-19 would not have any worse effects than a severe wave of influenza.
A lockdown would then be just as unnecessary as the justified fear of our elderly fellow citizens and the risk groups, which imposes an abnormal life on all of us.Quite independently of corona, it has been known and published for many years that vitamin D deficiency promotes the development of pneumonia - technically correct from ARDS (Acute Respiratory Distress Symptom) - as a result of viral infections. In addition, vitamin D stimulates the body's own synthesis of antiviral substances which specifically block the spike protein necessary for the docking mechanism of covid-19 to the receptor protein ACE2. All this is well-researched, published information that clearly shows us that vitamin D deficiency patients are at high risk of getting pneumonia.
In today's society, a large part of the population suffers from a massive vitamin D deficiency - especially in winter (see chapter: What else you should know WHO vs. D-A- CH limits).Statistics often assume that blood values of 20ng/ml are sufficient for vitamin D function. But these limits date back to the time when vitamin D was only studied for its effect on bone metabolism. The fact is - and studies in many European countries show this - that depending on the country, 20-40% of people do not even reach this value (20 ng/ml) even in summer.
One reason for this is the recommendations for vitamin D substitution. It has been published for years that the official recommendations of 400-800 units of vitamin D per day are based on a calculation error by a factor of 10. Unfortunately, this has still not been included in the official recommendations, as they should be in the range of 5,000 international units per day. Necessary for a stable immune system are blood values of 40- 50ng/ml. But only a few people to reach this level.
The data presented in this article show that up to 90% of deaths could be avoided. This means that the current situation could also be symbolically described as a "vitamin D deficiency pandemic". Unfortunately, in Germany neither the family doctor nor hospitalised patients routinely measure the blood level of vitamin D, even though all relevant organisations, such as the DGE, BfR, RKI and WHO, repeatedly report that our population suffers from a vitamin D deficiency that also causes other health problems. The present study from Indonesia shows exactly the result that must be expected based on the scientific background described above.
At vitamin D concentrations below 20 ng/ml, a very large number of patients succumb to the pneumonia triggered by Covid-19, whereas at vitamin D concentrations >30 ng/ml, the majority of patients survive and this with a statistically very good correlation.Large medical studies are very expensive. Someone has to raise the necessary funds in the hope that if the results are positive that tehre will be a revenue.
Given the low market price of vitamin D, this simple economic constraint explains why there are relatively few studies on vitamin D. Lorenz Borsche has been trying for a few weeks now to find partners in the medical field in Germany who, with his financial support, carry out purely observational ex-post studies (vitamin D testing of infected persons / course of disease), unfortunately without any success so far. The three studies presented here were initiated by ordinary doctors (MD/GP) and financed from their own resources and with considerable personal commitment(1}.
One must therefore not apply the same standard as in large- scale double-blind studies. Nevertheless, the results are so overwhelmingly clear that they should be examined. The rapid increase of vitamin D levels in covid-19 infected patients with vitamin D deficiency (< 30ng/ml), as well as vitamin D supplementation in doctors, nursing staff and risk patients to a healthy blood level of 40-50ng/ml, is - in the authors' view - the only conceivable solution to effectively contain the corona pandemic. One then could most likely allow the SARS-CoV-2 virus to spread and people could survive the infection like a wave of influenza. Apart from the social and economic benefits, this would also be much cmore economic than any other measure and might cost a fraction of what the lockdown has cost and will cost us - in money and in human lives.#000000:__''
The latest studies on Covid-19 and vitamin D
2 May the authors received a publication from Indonesia. Prabowo Raharusuna and his team had examined 780 covid-19 patients for their vitamin D levels. This study is neutral and independent, it was neither sponsored nor are there any other conflicts of interest. depressingly clear!
After correction for age, sex and previous illnesses, the risk of death is 10 times higher for people with vitamin D deficiency. For insufficient vitamin D status still 7 times higher than for sufficient, good vitamin D level. In order to make the evaluation transparent and easy to interpret even for non-scientists, Sadiah Priambada, a statistician in the team, prepared the data in such a way that the three comparison groups with vitamin D levels of 30 ng/ml can be assessed on the basis of an equal age average and an equal number of cases.
This more easily readable evaluation leads to practically the same results as the original data, which proves not only the stability of the data, but also the correctness of the previously chosen statistical approach to the calculation of the influencing factors age, sex and previous fluctuations.
      1 Vitamin D < 20 ng/ml (18.2 ± 0.6) Vitamin D 20-30 ng/ml(26.6 ± 1.4) Vitamin D > 30 ng/ml(32.1 ± 1.3)

Did the same for B12 and found a useful article.
      ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/VitaminB12-Consumer/
Why it's recommended - "Vitamin B12 is a nutrient that helps keep the body’s nerve and blood cells healthy and helps make DNA, the genetic material in all cells."
And again, here's the relevant information on foods and supplements.
      What foods provide vitamin B12?
      - Vitamin B12 is found naturally in a wide variety of animal foods and is added to some fortified foods. Plant foods have no vitamin B12 unless they are fortified. You can get recommended amounts of vitamin B12 by eating a variety of foods including the following:
Beef liver and clams, which are the best sources of vitamin B12.
Fish, meat, poultry, eggs, milk, and other dairy products, which also contain vitamin B12.
Some breakfast cereals, nutritional yeasts and other food products that are fortified with vitamin B12. To find out if vitamin B12 has been added to a food product, check the product labels.
What kinds of vitamin B12 dietary supplements are available?
Vitamin B12 is found in almost all multivitamins. Dietary supplements that contain only vitamin B12, or vitamin B12 with nutrients such as folic acid and other B vitamins, are also available. Check the Supplement Facts label to determine the amount of vitamin B12 provided.

Many people have difficulty utilizing B12 that is commonly in supplements (cyanocobalamin).
Some people do better with Methylcobalamin or Adenosylcobalmin forms of Vitamin B12 if they have adequate Intrinsic Factor to uptake it or might need b12 shots if inadequate intrinsic factor levels.

Clowns maybe entertaining grabbing news headlines and increasing its ratings, popularity and massive support from the common people but it’s not wise to choose as a main leader running the country. Please note that the antibody tests, at least in the US, are from a large number of different companies. The assays have not been properly validated and have sensitivity and specificity numbers that are all over the place. In addition, they must be interpreted with regard to the time since infection, which is fairly tricky. (For comparison, many physicians have great trouble interpreting hepatitis B serologies properly). It is not as simple as a positive or negative PCR , and even with the PCR test for active infection, we are seeing lots of false negative tests, also dependent on the particular test done and how aggressive the swabber is. I have a NYC physician friend who had a classic illness, with positive PCR test. He then enrolled in a trial on serology (antibody) tests. He had two different company's tests done. One showed IgG and IgM. The other showed nothing- no antibodies. So, GREAT CAUTION needs to be taken at this point in recommending and interpreting antibody testing-- it is truly the wild west out there in this area. Very very few people outside of large trials on population prevalence should get antibody testing right now as a result of this uncertainty.
Thanks Dr Campbell for your excellent videos. You are amazing. It is quite hard to stay this on top of the data and publications that are coming out. I am a physician in Los Angeles, a career medical educator training other physicians, and I have great admiration for your work. Keep it up!
