Emirates were operating daily flight from Dubai via Sydney to Christchurch. I flew on it about year and half ago. Hopefully one day, I'll come back to NZ again, beautiful country.

Nice mate! If it wasn't for the cloud, that route should provide some great views as you cross the alps! NZ is a wonderful place to visit BUT the weather can be so temperamental (as in, it's usually bad).
The no phone on the tarmac is for safety. So that you're alert to your surroundings and not your phone.
