    Hey guys, thanks for all that you do. My wife and I love watching you guys explore. I personally really appreciate when you are under sail and you still use the terms as it helps reaffirm learning about sailing. Myself and a buddy are going to sailing school next month and in the process of learning the terminology. So, watching videos like this just really helps to solidify the knowledge. Thanks again.

    Love your channel. I have wanted to do what you do since I was 7 yrs old after watching "The Dove". 40 yrs later I have a 26ft Trailer Sailor that I keep my skills up with around NorCal area. I use San Franciso Bay and the local Folsom Lake, 15min from me, to enjoy the water. I have outfitted my boat to live on for short spurts "weekend camping" if you will, and is better than not sailing at all. I have been getting my wife slowly interested in it to maybe someday meet you out on distant horizons too. Will have a much bigger boat though. Happy "Kitty" Mothers Day! When you trying to go somewhere sailing it's not a good time to use a rod because you really have to stop the boat to bring in any decently sized fish. Hand line is the better way to go when on the move.It's basically like a super strength kite string attached to a cleat at the stern. At the end of the string is a typical fishing leader (long enough to get the lure away from the string) and lure. The fish bites and nothing gives. The boat tires the fish out. Usually you'll notice it being dragged limply behind the boat. Just to go the string with some gloves and pull the fish in. Most times the lure only needs to be a hundred feet or so behind the boat. During two trips to Hawaii from California we caught 18 fish (tuna and mahi) in perhaps 14 days once we were a few hundred miles off the CA coast the first trip, and another 20 during the second trip. We used a mix of poles and hand lines but the hand lines quickly became the preferred method.

    Had to chuckle...a sailboat race is any two boats headed in roughly the same direction. We often have our very own "America's Cup" --in our minds anyhow. Lots of time we (mis-) quote the Princess Bride..."Are they using the same wind we are using"? Greetings from Houston.

  • @Rockabuy2002
    @Rockabuy2002 7 лет назад +1

    I have a couple thoughts on your fishing that might help you land a fish. First, I noticed you reel the line in without guiding the line evenly on the reel- this could result in the inability to reel anymore line in and you will lose fish. Second, you need to slow the boat way down while reeling in the fish. Not sure how deep the water was but fish could have been big mahi, wahoo, barracuda or something from tuna family. If you have a large fish you should remove rod from rod holder and pump the rod up and down. Pull the fish in on the upstroke and reel in on the downstroke. That way you can retrieve line and avoid getting spooled. Enjoy your videos.

    Either stop the boat when you have a fish on or keep losing fish and breaking gear. You also need to get a fighting belt so you can pull the rod out of the holder, That will give you MUCH more control as you can fight the fish while compensating for the motion of the boat relative to the rod. With it you can follow the swell and keep an even tension on the line. Without it the line is constantly going from slack to overly tight, that allows the hook to work loose or under strain it either rips out of the fish or breaks.

    • @davidh.7571

      scooby428 if the rod stays in the holder, that's not fishing. The line has nowhere to go except to break. Plenty of vids here show you how.

    when you get a fish on the line, step 1 is stop the boat ASAP. step 2 take the rod OUT of the holder. step 3 set drag and pull up, then reel down, repeat. when the fish runs, let it. then resume. step 4 Gaff the fish, don't try to pull it up on the boat with the line. better luck next time!
    also, looks like your line was all in the center, be sure to thumb the line left and right as you reel it in. and on occasion let the line all the way out with nothing on the end to let out the twist, then slowly reel in and check the line for nicks and abrasions, if you see any, replace the line.

    • @joannedavis3721
      @joannedavis3721 5 лет назад

      You have to stop the boat, and may have to back into your fish, depending on how big and strong it is. When you reel in, use your thumb to equalize the line, or you'll end up with a high point in the middle that prevents you from completing the catch.

    This is a tip when fishing first take the rod out of the holder and put on a rod rest so the end of the rod fits in by your groin then you can pull up the rod then drop and wind fast keeping tension on all the time the reason you are losing fish is because you let the line go slack the fish can then swim forward and pull out the hook this is why you lose fish another reason would be the hook is too small and it bends allowing them to disgorge from the hook but the main reason is tension as soon as you get a bite tighten the spool up don't allow it to run unless its a shark then on your own you will have no chance try and wind in as much line as you can being carful not to be pulled into the sea this would be the only time I would leave the rod in its holder as it would pull you two into the sea unless you are strapped to a chair as they are fighters plus you have to be strong it is so tiring to pull a shark in an eight-foot shark took me 3 and a half hours by arms were like jelly as you just loose the power in your arms so you have to release the tension to get a rest-bite. As you are not kittled out for sharks I recommend cutting the line but try and get in as much line as you can before doing so the shark will survive most hooks come out in time when they lose their teeth the hook comes out with it it's not a practice I recommend often as line in the ocean is a bad thing as we all know I never use lead weights I use safe weights now which are biodegradable so if you do get snagged on a reef or rock and can't get it loose then they will degrade to nothing so remember slack in your line is a NO NO this is the main reason you lose your fish what I do as well is catch mackerel first then use one as bait as fish smell the blood the flesh just cut a slither by the tail about three inches long then hook it three times with the hook also the lures want to be shinny as it reflects light just like a fish does when the light bounces of its scales and you are guaranteed to catch many fish of all kinds place cod macerel dog fish skate and many exotic fish where you are as i only fish around the waters of the UK ove fifty miles out oh and conga eels they are tough ones to bring in but they do taste nice they tend to hang around recks a down tide rod would be better for the bigger fish as its a short stubby rod about seven feet long at most but has a thick fibre core you might want to invest in one in the futre depends on how keen you are on fishing as you want it as a sorce of food then i would purchase one on mine i have a hundred and fifty pound line on my real you can get a lot bigger line but i find it just right as any bigger even the strongest man will not get the fish in most times it can take three people to bring in a big shark as your arms will give up same as a marlin be aware of there snout as they can kill people some have died bringing in these fish as they bring them in alive into the boat and they thrash around stabbing people the pros gaff them in the head killing them right out dead instanly then drag them in i have never coaght one only sharks as marlins dont swim around the UK as you well know i dont do shark fishing to me its bad luck if you catch one as iam fishing for cod or haddock ive caught a five and a half foot cod many times but now days its getting harder to catch these fish as they have been over fished by the trawler factory ships of today but mostley you are doing good things when fishing hope this helps you if you dont already know all what i have said then i apologise so all the best from John from Rugby UK.

    Either fish or sail, you can't do both at the same time. Every professional fishing boat I have ever been on, when you hook a fish trolling, the captain stops the boat and even heads the boat towards the fish. In those waters, where there are potential big game fish you need to get a fishing harness, pull the rod out of that silly boat holder and truly fight to catch. Catching big game tuna, wahoo or mahi is no joke and the reward is worth the effort to land the beast.

    I truly enjoy your experience and always wish we could do this. It is so much better then dealing with people, politics, deception......
