    From a more aggressive teacher I had years ago "close the gap", if you move into your attacker's space he will be unnerved that you have the confidence to "aggress" rather that seeking in that moment to play the victim and escape, no point seeking to escape if he is still active and a faster runner than you. In the first moment of attack I was thinking about elbows yesterday, to be effective you need to be close to your target, wooden-dummy teaches you to be close and deliver that strike between his arms. Thank you for this great lesson Master Wong.

    • @masterwong101
      @masterwong101  10 месяцев назад +2

      Absolutely, my friend. "Closing the gap" is crucial. It's about seizing control of the situation by stepping into your attacker's space, disrupting their momentum, and asserting your presence. Remember, in Wing Chun, we emphasize the importance of bridging that distance swiftly and decisively. The wooden dummy indeed trains you to be comfortable and effective in close quarters, enabling you to deliver powerful strikes with precision. Keep practicing, and you'll master this essential skill. Train hard, live clean, and not let anyone bully you.

    I am currently being tought the Tan Sao as a haymaker defense, so you turn 45° into the swinging arm and extend your Tan Sao straight from your shoulder against the biceps of the opponent to stop the haymaker. Simultaneously, with the other arm, you strike into the center. In the video, I see you blocking it with a chop against the arm instead. What can you say about that idea?

    • @masterwong101
      @masterwong101  10 месяцев назад +1

      In my experience, the Tan Sao can be highly effective, but remember the key lies in adapting techniques to fit the situation. Blocking with a chop against the arm can also be useful, depending on the context. Both methods have their merits, emphasizing adaptability, a cornerstone of combat. Experiment and find what works best for you!

    In the opening sequence the video shows you protecting your head from the strike from the opponents right hand.
    Two questions.
    1) is there a reason why you blocked your head like that? Is that a better approach than intersecting it with your hand and simultaneously punching with a vertical punch with the other hand?
    2) Today my sifu showed me a few ways to block hook punches. One of them being just a palm to their shoulder since it's a direct path and will reach them before the hook can connect.
    Have you used this simple technique of a palm to their front of the shoulder to block a hook punch?
    Respectfully,
    Wing Chun Student.

    • @masterwong101
      @masterwong101  10 месяцев назад +1

      Ah, my friend, your questions show a keen eye for detail. When I blocked the strike in the video, it was a deliberate choice based on the principle of "the time, the place, and the method of attack." Blocking to protect the head is instinctual, ensuring immediate defense against a potentially damaging blow. While intercepting with a punch is a valid technique, it requires split-second timing and may leave one vulnerable if misjudged.
      Regarding your second question, indeed, a simple yet effective technique, like using the palm to block a hook punch by targeting the shoulder, can be highly efficient. It's all about adapting to the situation at hand and utilizing what works best for you at the moment. Remember, the cornerstone of our training is mastering the art of 'closing the gap,' a vital skill in real-world confrontations. Keep practicing, my fellow Wing Chun student, and always prioritize adaptability in combat.

    Although Western Boxing is one of the most effective, practical Martial Arts, there's no one Best way of fighting like Bruce Lee once said. Its not always the Martial Art that's ineffective or lacks realistic practical techniques, its the individual/ person and how they adapt it or use it for real combat !!! It's more about the Training and the Individual than the Type of Martial Arts. The fighting range expertise/skill set . Wing Chun is effective and more practical than many traditional methods and was modified by Bruce Lee for real street fighting Combat purposes. Of Course he also included Western Boxing & Chinese Boxing !!! There's even Filipino Boxing Arts !!! So it's the person and how they use it more than the particular Art itself. Use all ways and no ways !!! You have grappling range and close range to middle and long Range. Everything has a advantage & disadvantage.

    to learn to fight and win, you must fight and win, against a real opponent, not a wooden dummy..I started training in Karate when I was 14, I'm now 57, the best lessons I learned was losing real fights on the street against real opponents who wanted to hurt or kill me..if you want to train yourself to be a warrior, then find a sparring partner who is bigger than you, tougher than you, and scares the crap out of you, and fight him until he's afraid of you... then you know you can win

    To suggest that Kung Fu is for Movies and Boxing is best in reality actually reveals the degree of understanding or lack thereof of both disciplines.
    Professional Boxing🥊 is a "Combative Sport" with "Rules" that limit target selection to Protect the participants. This is not to say that Boxing is not effective for "Street Defense" but modifications would add to its effectiveness. For example, Wing Chun was not created for "Sport" but for real street "Self-Defense" encounters. In fact, some of the target selections and techniques used in Wing Chun which are effective in a "Street Encounter" are illegal in Pro 🥊 Boxing and after a few warnings by the Referee will cause a fighter to be "Disqualified" .
    Some examples of these Wing Chun techniques are Biu Jee ie "Finger Jab" to the "Eyes". How many times have we seen a Boxer get a "Thumb" into the "Eye" and could not continue but the injured fighter "Wins" the bout via "Disqualification". In fact, a few years ago The Sport of Pro. Boxing was considering changing the original Boxing Gloves To "Thumless Gloves" to prevent prevent injuries to the Eyes 👁👁 by an accidently getting "Thumbed" 🤔 ... Also, how many times have we seen a fighter get hit with a "Low Blow" and even with a "protective supporter cup" on, slight injury still occurs and the injured fighter is allotted time to recover and continue the fight if they are able to. Some additional Target 🎯 Areas that Wing Chun focus on in Self-Defense are kicks to the Knee, Stomps to the Instep, Kicks to the Shin, Chop to the Throat, Head Butts, Elbow Strikes to the Head, Face, and Spinal Regions. So, Kung Fu would be Only somewhat effective in a Sport Boxing Ring Match because, the Kung Fu fighter Could Not utilize his or hers Full Arsenal.
    Much Respect!!

      Ah, the age-old debate between Kung Fu and Boxing for self-defense. Both disciplines have their strengths, but it's crucial to understand their applications. Boxing, with its rules and limitations, excels in the ring, but for real-world self-defense, adaptability is key. Wing Chun, designed for street encounters, offers techniques like eye jabs and throat chops, vital in unpredictable situations. Remember, "fight, move, people move."
