In 1897 the literacy rate in the Russian Empire was only 28,4%. In 1926 after Stalin came to power, the literacy rate was 56,6%. In 1937 the literacy rate was 89,7% (86% for men and 65% for women). For only one soviet rubel you could've bought 2 packs of pelmeni, 100 glasses of carbonated water, 6 chebureki or 10 pirogi with meat, 15 glasses of kwas, 20 rides on a subway, 22 pounds of potatoes or 6 packs of baltic cigarettes. 4. During Stalin's regime the USSR has experienced a huge population growth. On December 17, 1926 the population of the Soviet Union was 147 million people. In 1927 (December) the population increased to 150 million. On January 1937 the population was 164,5 million people, in 1941 the population was 198,7 million. Then during WW2 it dropped to 170 million (December 1941) however, after the war it started to increase again and on January 1959 the population was 208,8 million people! Quite an impressive number, isn't it? Plus, the death rate was lower than 10 deaths per 1000 people, while the fertility rate was approximately 27 births per 1000 between 1924 and 1953. 5. In 1928 there were more than 5,665 hospitals in the USSR. In 1932 the number rose to 7,788. In 1937 there were 11,196 hospitals. However, in 1941 the the number dropped to 13,666 due to the beginning of WW2. 6. In 1914 there were only 105,524 schools in the Russian Empire. In 1940 the number of schools increased to 191,545. In 1945 it dropped to 186,853 due to WW2. In 1949 there were 201,025 schools in the USSR. And in 1950 there were 201,628 schools. Fun fact: During Boris Yeltsin more than 1,600 schools in Russia were closed. 7. Stalin and the allied forces defeated Nazi Germany. This is perhaps his most obvious achievement. 8. Healthcare, education and apartments were free.
