- This is my 08 Mini Cooper Non S and as I've seen there's no really a whole lot of info on these so here it is.
I'm replacing the dreaded Timing Chain Tensioner that in known to go back on these. You'll know if yours is bad as it sounds like buckets of bolts while engines running while cold.
Your continuesly helping people years after your video is posted.
This helped me and made me feel like i onto something. Thank you man.
Yes it did work. Noise went away and idled MUCH better!!!!
I would’ve loved to of seen you install it, because I’ve been sitting here for 45 minutes trying to install mine and due to the spring load it’s virtually impossible to get in there by hand
I literally spun it on place and tightened it down just snug plus 1 Little UGA-DUG to make sure it's tight.
How did you get the throttle body off? I am having a heck of a time with mine.

If I remember right there's 3 bolts you need to take off. There's 1 on bottom of throttle body you can't see you need to feel for it but it IS on the bottom.
Hope this works for you
I had the same question!
Thanks a lot.
Thanks for your video. Did your fix work?
jbdpm Yes worked great the noise went away, idled as it should.
Hi I don't know if you can help I'm in the uk and have my cooper s 2010 ready for a new tensioner ,old ones out as we got the rattlling yesterday and have not used the car .so I'm ready to fit the new one but do I have to prime it with oil or will the engine oil do this for me when I start it . Cars got brand new fully synthetic oil fitted not used and filter . .? Thanks from Daz uk 🇬🇧
Hey basically I’m just trying to figure out how big of a deal it is that I have my cams finally lined up correctly, but my flywheel isn’t too dead center. Also, how do I fix that?
I heard that replacing the tensioner is only a temporary fix. Did the rattle every returned?
Really you should never just replace the tensioner on its own, it can cause more problems than you think.
There are several components to the timing chain kit, the tensioner is just one part, that puts pressure on the guide to keep the chain tensioned, the thing is, is that those guides usually break with age and need replacing, they put nice bits of plastic into the oil but you cannot tell until it either fails (not good, usually causes engine failure) or you get the same symptoms from the tensioner.
A full kit is required to stop this happening.
BMW use to just use to replace the tensioners, until the engines failed (its a really poor design, they should have sacked the BMW design team), instead I think they went on to do a few more timing chain designs and it cost BMW a fortune to sort out.
I just replaced the tensioner and got rid of the noise then sold the car maybe 6 months later
I have a 2007 mini cooper, there is a lag when gears change from 3rd to 4th... what do you think it could be?
Looks like you didn't secure the cams before removing the tensioner. Did you set the timing to TDC? Did the new tensioner go in easy or did you have to force the chain forward to tighten the new tensioner? I'm about to change the one I have and I was thinking about removing the valve cover and secure the cams.
nope didn't need to do as I didn't start/rotate the motor while not running.
What size star bit you use to remove the throttle body?
Is that the Beck Arnley brand Tensioner? How is it holding up? I have an '08 Non S Mini too and I'm just running into this problem so any info would be great. Thanks
Hayden C I ordered mine from Rockauto and can't remember what Brand Name sorry
What is the part number for the tensioner?
No Clue this was too many years ago and I'm onto my Porsche now
How did you disconect the throttle body?
If I remember right it's a couple of bolts? Waant to say it's the torx bolts
How much torque did you apply when you place the tensioner back?
Hernan Rodriguez-Torres Nothing I just put in new tensioner and tighten it down tight, then have it VERY little bit more.
I know it's probably too late for this to be of any use to you but for future people that read this the official mini service manual states to tighten the tensioner to 65 Nm (48 ft-lb)
mine is leaking from around that bolt can anyone tell me where is it from
Did you ever get a response to this question? Or a fix? My cooper is leaking oil, and the dealership reported this bolt has a gasket and it was leaking literally from the bolt. Was that your case? I'm looking to replace the bolt myself and save money.
@@luisfigueroa3818 The tensioner has a metal washer that should seal the bolt head against the engine block that it screws into.
