Hi John, yes us too, always avoided Madrid - often doing an extra 100KM or so to keep away as we'd always been told it's very busy and difficult to navigate. Having now done it, I can confirm this route had no tolls whatsoever, it kept us out of the low emissions zone and was actually really easy. Hope this helps.
