This driver decided to sacrifice himself to teach the van driver a lesson. Thank you for your service. Might want to consider a t72 tank for your next vehicle. I hear they are going cheap these days…
@Herkimer Snerd Bingo. According to the driver (and in the video description):
"Guy went straight through the red light which I didn't see until it was too late. Happened early this afternoon near derrimut "
@Herkimer Snerd the A pillar is on the side of the car. The intersection was directly in front of the car. There is no way in gods green earth it was obscured. And if it somehow was, that car is completely unsafe to drive because you can’t see what’s right in front of you
@@chrisnielsen9885 the camera is fish eyed mate, when the van gets to the line where it's supposed to stop and combined with the uploader accelerating it's most definitely in his blind spot. I don't think anyone would willingly accelerate into a vehicle
@@CRUMB. nah. Dashcams do have a wide field of view but that was right in front of the DC so that’s irrelevant in this situation. Who drives into a van right in front of them? This was a very satisfying video.

It is beneficial to look through the windscreen when accelerating.
Might have turned out better if the driver had eyes
@@KallumBest nah, the driver who sped up into the van. Van driver is an idiot, but this was avoidable.
Or if the van driver actually followed the road rules! Who’s fault do you think it was?
@@The_Last_Ninja the van driver ran a red light, but the camera driver doesn’t get off for t-boning him.
@@The_Last_Ninja One driver broke the rules, the other is clueless about defensive driving. They're as bad as each other, and this was a totally avoidable accident.
There's a pillar blindspot which perfectly hid the law breaking, fast, red light running van, just in case you didn't notice that the dashcam has a centre view but drivers do not.
The DC driver can reflect on the whole accident and can confidently say from his hospital bed, that he was in 100% right, or he couldve braked and swore at the other drive and forgotten about it tomorrow.
He took off from the lights pretty quick, and depending on how big the A pillar is, the van may have just turned into the turn at the right point to not see it until he was about to hit it.
If dc driver stomped on his brakes, the guy behind could have also taken off quickly and pushed the DC driver into the van anyways. Seen that happen at that exact intersection more than once.
Unless they thought it was time they deserved a newer vehicle!
@@MrToranaGuy Wow some desperate grab at straws there for excuses for the DC... he accelerated all the way into the Van at no point coming off the gas... a Giant White Van... this could have been the script for a Spec Savers Ad
@@MrToranaGuy - That A-pillar would have had to have been about 4 feet wide and blocked half the windshield because that van basically came from the nearly head on. No A-pillar was gonna block that view.
Or, the asshole who ran the red could have chosen NOT to run the red. See how that works?
While I can state with 100% confidence that tradie van boy and thousands like him get away this sketchy shit every day based on the "They'll brake because it's better than dealing with the fallout from a hit", I must ask the DC driver; WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK, MAN???!!!
He didn't break at all before impact which means he didn't run into the van on purpose
Because red light runners deserve it.
@@shykorustotora It's worse than that. The GPS readout shows 43km/h on the 4th second (immediately after the collision) after the driver started moving. That's impressive acceleration for a distance of under 15m, especially taking into account the lag associated with a GPS update frequency of 1Hz.
The van driver might be legally in the wrong for going through a red light but the cam car certainly undertook actions which contributed to the situation.
+1 The DC driver should lose his licence. Clearly has zero situation awareness.

Van driver: Runs a red light
Dashcam driver: “INSURANCE TIME BABBYYYYY!!!!” Completely floors car**
I'd say the DC driver will have to pay for some of the damages. He/she took off from the lights very aggressively and without due care and attention
What exactly is wrong with taking off quickly? I do it all the time, unfortunately everyone drives like a old lady on the road and take off and reach 80km/h 3 km down the road, drives me insane I’ve taken off relatively quick but not fast and red runners still get close by, you’re allowed to accelerate as fast, as long as A you don’t speed over the limit or B drag race someone next to you, I know they says it’s “dangerous” but its really not, unless you’re an actual moron and can’t control your vehicle

it went from 0 to 25 to 43 (no intermediate steps) so the GPS indicator cannot be very accurate. still in first gear it sounds like so 43 is a bit high for that.
@@boristhebarbarian Generally, GPS are pretty accurate but are a second or so behind the real world - that's why it hit 43 after the collision had occurred. Given the sound of the engine, I'd say 43 was the likely speed of the DC vehicle

Also the dashcam's wider angle of view means it's quite different to what the human-eye sees!
FFS... the A Pillar is not blocking his entire view out the front windscreen... even when the Van was DIRECTLY in front of him he wasn't braking.
Might as well say the Van driver didn't see all the red lights because his A Pillars were in the way
I did not know blind drivers are eligible for drivers licenses in Australia
You say that as a joke but I remember in Florida they mandated that letters on street signs had to be so big so that blind drivers could see them too.

Superb movie, too. RIP Mishter Connery.
For all of you that are bagging the dash cam owner, as a motorcycle rider & Beetle driver I can tell you that A pillar vision obstruction is a big thing. While the dash cam video gives you a motorcyclist style unobstructed view, the driver is sitting to the right of the camera & the van was probably hidden by his A pillar for most of the time. There's been plenty of times where I've had close calls with pedestrians at crossings in the Beetle because their sideways movement & my forward movement have been at a pace where they're constantly hidden behind my A pillar until the last seconds.
And, while we have laws on speed limits, there's no legislation on how quickly you can accelerate to the speed limit. If we all treated traffic lights a bit like the starting grid at Bathurst there'd be less congestion & some gronks like the van driver might have second thoughts before blowing through a red light.
As a motorcycle rider and a car (4wd) driver I 100% agree with Punch Buggy Yellow's comment.
Great name BTW. Reminds me old times.
perfectly explained. Thank you.
He didn’t even break when he was right in front of him. Zero breaks applied.
@@wildeturkey2006 I'll say it again. He probably couldn't see him until the last second. The A pillar on modern cars blocks more of your sight-line than most people realize. Almost every day I have a car pull out of a side street right in front of me while I'm on the bike. And, without fail, they give me the S.M.I.D.S.Y. response, "Sorry mate, I didn't see you", which is usually true. While on the bike I'm more alert to these types of incidents & whenever it happens I usually can't see the face of the driver because their A pillar is in the way. It's similar to the sign you've seen on the back of a million Semi's, "If you can't see my face, I can't see you."
How many points did he get for hitting the van and knocking it over?
I'd award the full 10.
Bonus points there was a bike in the back
None, according to TISM.
No custom license plate (2), not a classic car(6) (or remake(5)), and no bumper stickers(8). I don't think they count as any of the rest, either.
I feel a lot of people in the comments are forgetting that drivers don't usually sit in the centre of their windscreen, it's pretty obvious the van was in his pillar blind spot perfectly until it was right in front of him, and you hear him lift off the accelerator about 0.3-0.5 seconds after the van becomes visible (to the driver, not the dashcam)
Yes he takes off quick, but he's not as unaware a driver as the clip makes him appear at first.
Good point
I hear a clutch kick, while yes he technically let off the throttle, he was doing so while still attempting to go faster. There was 0 evasive action and you can tell the van isn't stopping for the light from the 0:04, the instant it starts turning just looking at the body language of the van there is no brake being applied and they have no intent of slowing down. At many points this would have been visible to the cam owners perspective if they cared to look. I don't take issue with taking off quick either, but if you intend to do that, assess all points of ingress to the intersection before applying throttle.
I would really recommend pinning this comment, this isn't a normal intersection where the red light runner is clearly in view, the driver could have easily been sat in a way to have no view of the van. The amount of people putting even some blame on the DCO is ludicrous, when they had every right to drive the way they did (most people wouldn't, but they had a green light) and when the van hadn't even started turning when the light went green. This is 100% the van's fault, severity could've been limited with different driving from the DCO but wouldn't have happened at all if you don't run the red, especially that late.
This comment should be pinned for people's awareness.
Lifting off the accelerator because he was going for the next gear
Nope. The camera operator saw the vehicle, and continued to accelerate. The van driver was wrong, but the other guy created a much worse accident by not even attempting to slow down.
Had there been more than one vehicle on the side where the DC driver was and had the Van driver continued his course of reckless action, he would have most certainly have collided with them.
Easily avoidable dash cam driver

If you're going to drive fast, be aware. Idk what kind of car would have an a pillar that large that you couldn't see the van.
exactly, there is no car made ever with such a blind spot directly in front. You see it over and over again on the road people speed up to get angry and slam on brakes or what ever when they see someone else in the wrong. this time it was a very stupid decision on the part of the dash cam driver, even though the van ran a red light!
A sports car where you sit down low and further behind the engine have huge pillars.
On many vehicles A-pillars have become a lot thicker with the addition of full side-curtain air-bags. Something which is often commented on by car-reviewers!
I've been at this intersection, there's no way an A pillar would be blocking your view the intersection is literally infront, this was deliberate.
Where was the car driver looking???

Clearly to get some good dash cam footage.
Haven't we all had that voice in our head, "Get that red light runner!"
No. Most of us would more likely think: "let's hope there is a police car to get that red light runner"

Easy to say the DC driver could have done this or that differently. Not the same on camera as in real life. Easy to pass judgement on someone else when you weren't there to witness it. Only one driver ran the red, and they are the driver at fault
Yeah, people need to remember that dash cams have a wide angle so it wouldn't have been as obvious in real life, and it's easy to spot the danger when you're on youtube watching a dash cam video waiting for something to happen.
But at the same time this guy didn't brake at all, just full power right up to the crash, obviously didn't check around before going through the green light, and took off like he had a fuck date to get to. So he's still a dumb shit even if he doesn't have any blame.

@Herkimer Snerd no dude, come on. I have been in several vehicles where that situation occurred. Myself and other people in multi lanes ALL avoided an accident by being observant of our surroundings. This person was not. For whatever reason was distracted, or not paying attention. If your car pillar obscures your view of direct oncoming traffic, it’s time to take it to the panel beaters, or the scrap yard. It just requires minimum observance.
There's a chance he was checking the traffic that was just stopped by the red light, as that is usually where red light runners come from...

@@wildeturkey2006 Race cars do not have upright seats for vision, it's to do with safety and ensuring the 6pt harness/hans all work correctly. This is prime example of "I have the right of way so I must accelerate and don't brake even though I can cause a crash and injure people cause I had the right of way"
here in New Zealand they drill it into you when learning to drive... its no longer "right of way" its "give way" (with the obvious red light means you stay put). When people have it in their mind that they have "right of way" they think they can do no wrong where as "give way" makes people think and take care in their actions.
@@darkhoshinonz That's how it suppose to be all around the World.
Classic example of a driver coming off a green light with no awareness of their surroundings.
How did they not see the van??
in all fairness, the DC driver HAD to be looking forwards to be able to see it.🙃
Can’t believe this driver - I would never let this footage get on the internet 😂
I'm still trying to figure out what the angle is here. Like, did he gun it because he wanted to teach the van driver a lesson? Or was this a genuine accident? Or is it one of those situations where the dashcammer genuinely feels stupid? I dunno.
@@CopiousDoinksLLC The van was in his A-pillar blindspot, Einstein.
With music like that playing driver confirmed absolute flog not paying attention and could of backed off to prevent the crash 🤦🏼♂️
I live around here, moved from the east to the West side of Melbourne. I was amazed how many people run red lights around here. Now I just wait a moment or two, look left and right before I take off. I am not joking. Many vehicles run that light coming off the highway to the far right at this intersection. I am used to seeing this daily around Derrimut!
Now that I have watched it again, I believe the rubbish truck was also running the red light coming off the highway
It’s disgusting. Red lights and arrows are optional in the west since lockdowns ended
After a couple of instances of narrowly avoiding collisions with speeding red-light runners in the past, I also learnt that same habit of checking before taking off when the lights change!
Even avoided being T-boned by one driver who noticed too late that they'd gone red. He came to a screeching-halt in front of the council-bus I was driving! At least he backed up & got out to apologise profusely!
The cops enforce precisely bugger all these days
And what happens if that idiot caused the poor Van driver to die. What is I'm so cool much a man because he showed the Van driver a lesson. The Van driver was in the wrong But running the red light but it doesn't give the driver of the opposite side to take the law in his own hands and purposely smashes car into that person.
Pause it around the 6 second mark. Draw a line from the van to the right side pillar. Chances are the van is in that pillar blind spot. As rev head fwit races off the van stays in that spot for a second. Add into that situation loud music and POSSIBLY looking away because they thought they had a clear run. They both got what they deserved. Fate lined them up perfectly. Edit : Also, if you pause around the 8 second mark just as they collide, then use the comma and period keys to move back and forward a frame at a time, there's something with a white edge that looks like it has a screen. There's one frame where it reflects on the windscreen. Keep going a few more frames forward and you can see a black smartphone like object bounce off the instrument panel cowl.
There was a passenger in the van
@@AnotherDoug Yeah I noticed that too. Sort of looks like they didn't see the car coming, either.
Maybe the DCO was watching the taco and speedo? Didn't seem to be watching the road.
I actually want to see the fall out - that first awkward conversation when the tradie driver asks "why didn't you brake man?", and then the DC punches him in the mouth.
"Van driver runs red light and is rammed by driver starting from a dead stop who could see it all happening and also could have avoided...." ?
Dash cam driver was just looking for an accident that wasn't he's/her's fault so just put the foot down when taking off at the lights i hope the van driver is ok
hope he get's a new car out of this
