I think this song is a mini master piece of composition, story telling and musical execution. It’s sophisticated, suprising and engaging in so many ways. I first obsessed with this song in 70’s and have returned to it occasionally but its made a lasting impression on me in my life and career as a musician and music teacher. I’m so glad your video is out there for people to find.
Harry is one of my personal heroes, so I love seeing people discovering his songs. As you say, he always has that twist the story. Harry was a master storyteller. He could weave such a wonderful story in just a few minutes and leave you completely spellbound. I love your reaction to the twist. It was quite a twist, wasn't it? :)
When I first heard this song live many years ago. The whole audience gasped at the end. I will never forget that show. Your expression at the end was priceless. Even though you knew there was a twist, it caught you by surprise. One of my all-time favorite Harry songs.
I've never seen a reaction of this before. Chapin has a lot of great songs (some of which I've seen that you've covered, such as 'Mr. Tanner'), so it's great to see you talk about an artist I think many in my generation (I'm 28) just aren't aware of.
It is great to see a new generation discovering Harry Chapin. I was fortunate enough to see him almost exactly a year before he passed. He was working on a novel based on the song at the time of his death. He wrote some lighter stuff too…for a change of pace try “Dirt Gets Under The Fingernails”.
I swear, about once every 6 months for the past couple of years I randomly search to see if anyone has reacted to this masterpiece for the first time, and you're the first one! Congratulations!
A great Harry Chapin song is the STUDIO version of Flowers Are Red. Itsca dong based on an experience a friend of his had when she went to a teachers in service day where they review a child's progress. The teacher told the mother that her son marched to the beat of a different drum but she'd soon have him marching in step with everyone else. Brutal song on the damage a bad teacher can cause. I've had both in my time.
This song is about Candor,N.Y. It’s a small town near Ithaca,N.Y. Which is where Harry worked when he was younger. When cats in the cradle was released he left the area.
They just made a documentary about 40 years after he died it is called when in doubt do something i strongly recommend you watch to find out who he was you will be amazed he was a once in a life time person
If you could do just one more Harry Chapin song, I would suggest 'Better Place To Be". It is the quintessential HC song IMO. And if you want heavy, try 'The Sniper'. 'Mr. Tanner' is also and incredible story and is based on an actual occurrence.
I have actually reacted to all 3 of these songs 😊 . They are all great in their own way. I will definitely be reacting to more Harry Chapin songs too! 😊

Im 65 and I first heard Harry in1972 and fell in love with his music and causes. After all these years nothings changed. He is the best!

It is nice to “meet” someone my age who likes similar music. I will be turning 28 in about 3 weeks. 😊
@@reactionswitherin5504 Certainly wish you a early happy birthday, then, and wish you well with your future reactions.
@@TheMikeyX Thank you so much! 😊
Thanks for doing this song, Erin. This really shows how complex a song writer Harry was. He had a brilliant mind for story telling.
I love seeing someone so happy while listening to Harry. He's number one on my all time list!

How shocking! Who would have thought? A politician, told a lie!

I’m honored to be the first reactor you’ve seen take on this song. It is a very interesting song with a shocking twist. 😊
Harry Chapin - The Rock
My favorite singer.

If there ever was a good song about incest, this is the one.
What about Hey Little Sister?
Anybody feeling any Darth Vader vibes after figuring out the context of this song?

Not quite the shocker that this one is, but "Long Lankin" by, among others, Steeleye Span is a great song if you want to give that one a try.
You must listen W.O.L.D….
Too bad Harry Chapin didn’t continue the song a little further to find out the narrator’s reaction beyond the end and what he’d have to say
