Allen Elishewitz did a pass around of this knife a while back on a forum. I was lucky enough to put this knife through its paces with the designer's blessing. Cuts like a laser and continues to for a long time with the CPM154. Solid knife. Well built.
You got it all wrong. This is in fact a tactical knife where you hold it by the blade and attack with the handle. Also if you throw at someone in the dark, they won't see it coming and it will instantly kill them no matter what end you hit em with.
Nick, i disassembled my first pocket knife yesterday. I used 10w nano oil to lube it and its action has improved quite a bit. Couldnt have done it without your disassembly videos, thank you for that! The knife i disassembled was a Böker lateralus if you were wondering :-)
Nick- This knife is not assisted. I know it feels that way. Hogue has a unique system without washers or bearings and there is no spring. Kevin Cleary showed the system. I really like button locks. The ergos are better on the 4" version. I have small hands and the 3.5 " was too small in hand. I love the looks of the X-5. I wish all aluminum knives came with a pattern where when it wears it looks fine like the CRKT Ripple. I'm not crazy about the cerakote blades. I wish they had satin options for each color. I've only seen satin on the blue model that doesn't have the G-10 inserts. I really root for Hogue because they built a factory and produce their knives here in the US. Also notable, they have a nice pouch. Other US companies should follow suit as nearly all Chinese competitors include a pouch.
MrGeebear, check the new Hogue X6 that Allen is showing on his IG page. It's all CF, with stepped edges. Looks like this thing only even more brutal, if that's possible. The clip certainly appears way fixed, with standoffs. And what was it that this knife needed? I mean _really_ needed? That's right. *SPEEDHOLES.* The X6 has no less than 14 of them. So now it's not only brutal, it can grate your cheese. And you like your blade with milling patterns? I knew you did. Man, this knife has it all. If Nick likes crazy, this thing's got it in spades. And aces.
slidetek- I'll check that badboy out. The pivot design on the X-5 is really different. Nick thought it was assisted. It feels that way but isn't. It really flies out. I'm not too mechanical, but I thought it was unique with no washers or bearings. I'm sure you understand it a lot better with your background. Time to check out the X-6 and stock up on cheese.
You still have Frankie and Bird's WE? I really like Elishewitz's designs, but sometimes (often) function follows form. The button lock is a non-starter for this southpaw. The clip looks like it's backwards, as if somebody thought _"...you know what this knife needs? Another hot spot!"_ If Dethklok marketed a knife, this would be it. *Brutal*
Tom Garcia If it swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck, it’s a duck. This may use a different mechanism than some, if what you’re saying is true, but it acts enough like an assist that I have no trouble calling it that.
Nick Shabazz Right but unlike an assist, theres no torsion bar or spring of any kind to go wrong, which is a nice thing to not have to worry about which is a beautiful thing
Nick- Time to give it up on this being assisted. You are a very intelligent guy, but seem to have difficulty acknowledging when you are wrong. You were the same way with the Iron Cross when you called it a Nazi symbol. I once said the Para 3 was pinned based on a video put out by GP Knives. You gave me more compelling evidence that it wasn't and I stood corrected. You need to do the same. Kevin Cleary has provided the evidence and so does Hogue. This knife is not assisted, plain and simple.
A knife is assisted if there is some spring or mechanism helping to open the blade. This is no more an assisted knife than any other flipper with a detent that lets you build pressure to snap it open.
This is NOT an assistant opening knife I managed to take mine apart without any issues. This and the 4 inch model has it's uses and it's not for the faint heart
My old knife guy take is this...Where these knives shine is in the fact it is both tactical and EDC. I was going to get magna cut but in this price range, but noticed handles were thin and the blade thickness is thin. So, it may be stronger steel but, if is thin(0.089) it is going to break easier. than CPM154 that is .150 thick. My WW2 KaBar is .165 Thick. That Hogue blade is a beast!! And all your cutting pressure is against the fixed cross bar and the button lock secures it all up. The sharp edges seem to turn some off, while others with medium or large hands seem to like it. People have said their work on the edge, was amazing. Case and a sticker, some of these other companies are so cheap they can't give a sticker out?
Nick, you are so fun to listen to! Not that I'm laughing out loud like an idiot while listening to you, but I do smile. Please, however, don't let my compliments go to your head. I dig you just the way you are.
I guess I have to come to terms with the fact that I am attracted to weapons. I think this is one of the most handsome designs I have ever seen. I'm not quick to just go drop 250 bucks on another knife I don't really need, but I will for this
I agree big time. And the knife surprised me at how perfect the size was ... Literally every negative he mentioned I could disagree with and is totally subjective
Nick: I love this knife! I have the 4" blade, but I have XXL Hands and the handle fits me perfectly! Super sharp factory edge & my EDC. Love your reviews, my friend!
Honestly as far as ergos are concerned the four inch version is better because it gives your hand more room. I own the 3.5 inch version too and it barely fits well in my small-ish hands. I carry mine in my back right pocket and I don't have any issues carrying it honestly, but I also don't have anything else in that pocket. The clip is terrible, but stretch it out with 2-3 quarters overnight and it becomes more manageable. Also worth noting is I have the tumbled blue version, which lacks G10, this comes with its own set of good and bad in and of itself. I wish it was their to improve grip sometimes and could be incorporated for a cool look, but I'm also glad it's not there to tear up my jeans. Also the blue version is much more people friendly in appearance than the black or desert tan models, it's also harder to find (I think it's exclusive to certain gun/ammo websites, I know I bought mine off of one, optics planet or something like that.) By no means a perfect knife, but unique enough and cool enough to stay in my collection.
Reminds me more of a sharks tooth or a shark in general maybe it's the flipper idk always been intrigued by these knives they give a glimpse into the future of knife making
It's a gorgeous stealthy looking knife. Don't know nothing about it's functionality nor longevity in the real world, but it looks awesome to me. PS; I like the batman, so I'm very bias. 😁
Totally agree with what Nick said about knives made by firearms manufacturers, usually they suck. But, ive yet to be disappointed by hogue knives, made in the USA, and very ergonomic like their custom gribs. Also dont seem to be backed by super tacticool gimmicks either. Love the ones I own.
I saw the Hogue knives. Was interested. Then wasn't. Then I watched this video and I'm interested again. My wallet hurts. Thank you Nick for putting out constant quality content as always.
Personally the design of the knife is what really drew me to it. I ended up getting a modified wharrenclif style. Its just a smidgen more narrower because it doesn't have that bump on the back of the blade that made it look even from the handle. I have a medium size hand and it fits perfect. This knife is a try before you buy kind of thing to make sure its comfortable. It has replaced my old trusty recon 1 as my EDC knife of choice. Even after having it for about a year I still love just looking at it. Mine is black with the black G10 scales and so far the aluminum case has no signs of wear on it. The thumb flicker on the other hand has had some of the black coating wear off its tip from rubbing in my pocket and just normal open and closing of it.
I have a Hogue EX-A01 automatic, it’s pretty awesome and avoids a ton of the issues you had with that one, you should check one out when you can. Still a bit huge and has the button lock stick though.
Just finished watching Nick. I do so agree. This had the potential to be really good. It's like the designers finished off a good final draft, then celebrated with a few bourbons and made some alcohol induced changes.
Got a couple of Hogue knives the about 6 years ago With "Lava Damascus " synthetic handles. The button locks were sticky then too. Wide and chunky . Still, something made me bite. I think it's the flair of being different in a lot of ways. You have been observant of the Hogue quality of mystery attraction. Good stuff as usual Nick.
There’s a lot to like about it. I like the button lock especially since it’s good to have your hands away from the path of the cutting edge when you’re closing it. It seems to me if the lock button were better recessed into the handle the safety lock wouldn’t be necessary.
you'd think a company which makes gun & pistol grips would do better in terms of ergos. i like my x5 but i totally agree with your point, especially with bigger hands the handle becomes a pain!
I really appreciate it when Nick reviews knives that are different than the kind of knives he prefers. A lot of RUclipsrs won't do that so you don't get a lot of variety on their channels.
EX-03 is very much internally built the same and is way more ergonomic than the EX-05. Its also a manual with a very snappy action. Disassembly is a breeze. No washers or bearings. Did I mention it is an INTEGRAL?
Nick, I should have listened to you. I bought this and had to immediately remove the clip and re-bend it before I could even get it into my pocket. Clip was tighter than bark on a tree out of the box. The colossal flipper tab can be seen from across the street, and yet it’s difficult to deploy. The redundant plunge lock slider is too close to the button, and the seahorse shape of the scales lets the whole knife squirm out of your grip while you struggle to operate the flipper. This is Hogue, after all, which built its name on ergonomics. So disappointing. The scales have a thorn shape at the location of the index finger ramp for added discomfort. This is an expensive knife that won’t be in my EDC rotation, but at least I did buy the Doug Ritter RSK Mk1 G2 on your recommendation. Thank you for your real-world insight and concise, practical reviews.
Couple years later and I've watched this a few times, but how did you get a "blackout" version? This is the only place I've seen one, the rest have silver push button ect and the rest is black. Second - you keep saying this knife is assisted.... it's not, its manual.
I have one of these and I have to say it's cool really cool but I can't say it's a great EDC mainly because of the pocket clip and no it's not assisted seeing as it's not a liner or framelock it can't use a normal detent system it has to rely on a stiffer area at the bottom to function like a detent
houge has deff caught my attention, usa made and from one ive handled, made damn well using good blade steal. a hogue is likely in my future at some point
Commenting while watching. Yes, very 1st Gen Stealth bomber...closed it looks like a Batmanesque tool, like, it should be in the 1960s Batman utility belt...you opened it again and all I see is Batman wings, almost like that double-bladed Batman 'crap in a box' knife...USD200 is a good price for the quality, but it looks like a $20 Gas store knife, sorry...but it's nice yes, and I really want to love this knife...but...BATMAN! Edit: (while watching your clip criticism) From first look, this knife reminded me in perceived size as my long lost Buck Alpha Folder (the guthook one). So, as I looked I thought, throw the clip away and buy sheath for it. It's just a tad too 'big' for a pocket knife.
Shit! I wish I sold mine before you posted this. I agree with everything you said. The ergos are definitely painful and I have big hands...I never carried mine because o couldn’t get it in the pocket.
If the knife was assisted, I don't think you could swing the blade shut like you are doing. I just have a Hogue EX-03. It's an integral polymer handle 3.5" blade with button lock. I have XL hands and the handle isn't a great fit. The end of handle is too short for my pinky to get a good grip.. It also tapers thin at the end making it even worse.. I've handled several other Hogues.. Never seen production knives with such perfect mirror polished edges..
I've gotta say it. This is an assisted more expensive version of the protech cambria which is a button lock flipper that is not assisted for less money and a better action. It's a cool design but I think protech did it better.
There’s no washers in this knife Nick. It’s kind of strange but it runs on a pad of aluminum. Stiletto took his apart and that was it man. It’s no he’s five years old and I’m about to get it I think.
in my personal view, there are better options, but as always, you need to decide what you need or want the knife to do, but ultimately, this knife looks like it belongs on a spaceship in some B-rated science fiction movie. I've heard of people complaining about "pocket comfort" and applicable uses, it looks like an overbuilt tactical folder, but its an overalll design showboat "look what i can make" type deal.. all my own opinion of course
"as a reviewer so much of life is spent looking at titanium framelock flippers" i would argue that as a cold steel employee much of your life is also spent looking at black on black tactical murdery folders.
I ended up finding an EX-A04 auto with both a modified wharncliffe blade and an aluminum handle (most were G10). I think it’s superior to the EX-05 series. (The site indicated that I got the last one)
I wish i was tacticool so I could enjoy these types of knifes. I only have one pair or camo pants, but they arent even digi cam cargo pants so i am not in the club. Looks like a good unit.
The last five minutes are hilarious. But instead of saying "it's like hugging a porcupine" you should've said "it's like shaking hands with a porcupine". Re-shoot the video with the line I suggested.
Nick, while watching this I was thinking it might be cool to do reviews of some less murdery, tactical things -- haven't seen a SAK in awhile, and the Pioneer/Pioneer X might be good picks for a review. Or maybe some other traditional. Could be a good changeup on the channel.
Nice! To be fair, I just picked up a Pioneer last week and really love it (which I'm sure is true for a ton of suggestions you get here, people love confirming that they bought something good by hearing from an expert that the thing is good). Anyhow, great to hear there's some other stuff coming, will be happy to look out for it. Keep it up!
That's not a pocket pecker, it's a pocket pick axe, it's going to the mountains to mine for valuable resources. It should be called the Hogue Gold Miner. Still I want to get the Hogue Ex01, I don't like this assisted one.
Nick... You seemed a bit concerned about the Soviets trying to acquire the plans to this device... I'm sorry to be the first to inform you... The USSR (Union of Soviet Socialist Republics) was disbanded in 1991... However... If you are still worried... Rest assured... I have heard that we are developing our "Star Wars"... Or Strategic Defense Initiative System... as we speak... I tried to get a hold of my good buddy Ron Reagan but he hasn't been answering my calls lately but I'm sure we are right on track... Rumor has it that Ron is working on a new Terminator movie with Arnold since they are about the same age and in about the same physical condition... Oh... This knife would make an excellent replacement for my fidget spinners...
Not an assist. It's a weird no bearing/washer system that gives it an action that feels assisted but has no spring for you to break
Ironic that hogue grip company makes a knife with a bad grip?
Allen Elishewitz did a pass around of this knife a while back on a forum. I was lucky enough to put this knife through its paces with the designer's blessing. Cuts like a laser and continues to for a long time with the CPM154. Solid knife. Well built.
No Delica comparison? Are you ok?
This one flew in too stealthily, I scrambled the Delica, but it wasn't able to get to the review strip in time.
Simon Waysted Maybe Nick's been replaced by a replicant? That's the only reasonable explanation that I can think of.
Ikr, without a Delica I have no idea how big this knife is.
nebulamask81 ikr that is my only size comparison he ever does besides the zt but that's beside the point
@@craiglachman1379 It's actualy Nick Shabaz. A near perfect replica, but something is missing.
You got it all wrong. This is in fact a tactical knife where you hold it by the blade and attack with the handle. Also if you throw at someone in the dark, they won't see it coming and it will instantly kill them no matter what end you hit em with.
thats funny as hell man,,,,,,
Does that mean from the side as well
Don't you have to be a certain prestige level to unlock that perk? LOL
Nick, i disassembled my first pocket knife yesterday. I used 10w nano oil to lube it and its action has improved quite a bit. Couldnt have done it without your disassembly videos, thank you for that!
The knife i disassembled was a Böker lateralus if you were wondering :-)
Tactical stealth harmonica! Awesome.
It looks like something batman would carry lol
I was going to say the same thing.
Agreed, looks like Batman's harmonica!
Haha I just said that then saw your post.
Then you should check out brous knives “tyrant”
That one sure looks like a Batman knife or a modernized caveman style folding knife
Nick- This knife is not assisted. I know it feels that way. Hogue has a unique system without washers or bearings and there is no spring. Kevin Cleary showed the system. I really like button locks. slidetek- I'll check that badboy out.
As a follow-up, the knife you mention was released as the Beta 1 but apparently only 50 were made.
That is not true. The X-5 was released in many iterations by the hundreds.
MrGeerbear What isn't true? I'm talking about the knife the previous poster called the x6.
It's not an assisted knife. That's their proprietary retention system. That's why the blade doesn't spring back up when you push on it.
*Brutal*
Nick, that knife is not assisted, there is a detent embedded in a steel insert in the aluminum scale that allows it to deploy the way it does
Tom Garcia If it swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck, it’s a duck. This may use a different mechanism than some, if what you’re saying is true, but it acts enough like an assist that I have no trouble calling it that.

Very odd that it would be uncomfortable in hand, houge makes every pistol handle super comfortable.

nick have you done a review yet on the hogue micro switch, thinking of getting one but the reviews iv seen are not telling much

A knife thats made to use only with gloves?
@@Abaddon5850 Nothing stopping you from using it without gloves, but given who their target market is it makes sense to think of users wearing gloves.

Edit: (while watching your clip criticism) From first look, this knife reminded me in perceived size as my long lost Buck Alpha Folder (the guthook one). So, as I looked I thought, throw the clip away and buy sheath for it. It's just a tad too 'big' for a pocket knife.
The button lock stick will go away after break-in.
Shit! I wish I sold mine before you posted this. I agree with everything you said. The ergos are definitely painful and I have big hands...I never carried mine because o couldn’t get it in the pocket.
“Oh yeahhh! That’s lockstick!” Lol. Love you dad
The X-5 is not assisted.
Great review, thank you
I have this knife and I like it a whole lot. But I still loved this review and your commentary about how terrible it is. You're hilarious. Subscribed.
As an owner of the knife, do you find merit behind the criticism? Spot on? Or any differing opinions?
I was thinking about this model,,,,now I see the light
There’s no washers in this knife Nick. It’s kind of strange but it runs on a pad of aluminum. Stiletto took his apart and that was it man. It’s no he’s five years old and I’m about to get it I think.
Can this knife get de-assisted?
Not assisted. Just a different detent than people are used to and feels assisted.
in my personal view, there are better options, but as always, you need to decide what you need or want the knife to do, but ultimately, this knife looks like it belongs on a spaceship in some B-rated science fiction movie.
Call me crazy but I think it looks really good…..
I enjoy most of your reviews, but this review was Spec-Tac-U-Lar!!
You are pretty good at saying things that aren't wrong.
Actually this looks really nice they got them in 3 and 4” blades.
Hey so are you gonna review a Cold Steel Recon 1?
Iam in love with this guy's voice
The grip is a little bit sharp.
North Korean new stealth bomber? Kinda small.
BOOM! First time getting an instant notification. In Orstraylya of all places!
+C Smith I don’t love nail nicks, but got some more traditional knives in the pipe
Keep it up!
It looks like a harmonica from the back.
There goes Nick tryin to play his Hogue again! Lol!
That's not a pocket pecker, it's a pocket pick axe, it's going to the mountains to mine for valuable resources. It should be called the Hogue Gold Miner. Still I want to get the Hogue Ex01, I don't like this assisted one.
16:16 Magical telepathy used to move knife
It's not assisted, Nick!
Tell us how you really feel about the Hogue! Get a grip on hotspot city. Excellent & detailed review.
If Batman had a pocket knife that would be it
You would think a knife designed by a gun grip company would understand something about ergonomics.
thx Nick, you just saved me 220 Euro's
Saved me from buying. Looks great but yeah too many other issues. Plus I’m not a fan of the weird hogue opening.
JS Kraz- very funny blast from the past.
I like it ! Then you said $200.😂
I feel like it's constantly trying to kill me!
If Batman carried a knife this is what I imagine ge would have.
honestly all i see was a lotr fantasy esque knife instead of a stealth bomber
All I see is a ninja shark.
Огонь, складишок!
