Regarding the phantom heavy rain - remember that the metars in MSFS use live weather, even if you've set custom weather. Given that at 2:30 the forecast said overcast 2700 yet you could see stars from the cockpit, it sure looks like you were using custom weather.
Night flying is fun and it helps build instrument confidence. Giving your eyes time to adjust to the lack of light before a flight always helps.
