Thank you Matthew. Choosing a subject is another problem I have. I’m always so uncertain if it’s a good subject or not. I’ll bear in mind your good tips.
Very helpful. I have a hard time simplifying and wind up painting all the details. Then I don't even like it anymore and quit in the middle. Lol. These steps hit the nail on the head for me.
Matt, Thank you! I have watched dozens of artists on RUclips and you are one of the very few who offer so many common sense tips that can really help all painters- not just beginners. 😊
Thanks Matt. You always make sense and your tips are valuable and will pay off in the long run. I completed a farm scene yesterday and got too caught up in detail and overworked it. Everyone who sees it says it’s very good, but I know the truth. Today, I sketched out and started another in which I am using a painting by Edward Hopper. I was determined to be loose and keep my colors vibrant and transparent. So far, it is working so well. I just might be turning the corner on watercolor. (I hope). I so appreciate your guidance. I look forward to more content in the future. Your own work is absolutely amazing!
Dear Mr White.tank you very much for your very good advicesr concernant watercolour painting. Your explications are allways deep and clearing. And alors your voice and english langage are a good occasion de for me to practice my english at the same time. it’s win-win.Merci beaucoup.
Brilliant. it’s always the basics that need to be re-stated. I needed this today. I’m working on a piece and I had an ‘aha moment’… I need to go back in and crop it down to the simplicity of where the story is, where the big shapes are. Thank you for your clear teaching, Matthew.🙂

Matthew, do you suggest beginners to do Plein air painting or in studio with a reference? I feel Plein air is more complicated than in studio as outdoor light changes , difficult to compose etc

Matthew, do you suggest beginners to do Plein air painting or in studio with a reference? I feel Plein air is more complicated than in studio as outdoor light changes , difficult to compose etc
I would start indoors first. That will help you get down the fundamentals that are crucial and more challenging in outdoor painting.
is there a free photo editing software to make photos into greyscale for doing value studies?
Both android and apple’s photo apps do grey scale plus much more, all free.
